Honestly I'm very concerned for the Coptic minority in particular. They have rough times ahead.
Not that but it's quite phony to exhibit fake concern.

You made a post about a politician campaigning for Sharia law, and then went on to say that the Christians of Egypt have 'tough times ahead.' Oh and of course you threw in the word 'scary' just in case the audience didn't get the message. Unless you'd like to clarify that these are two completely unrelated and independent positions you're presenting, you're being really, really disingenuous and misleading, considering sharia law doesn't apply to Christians but to Muslims.

And that's besides the sweeping assumptions being made that by default sharia law = crazy / scary. That's not misleading per se, just ignorant.

Actually you seem to need clarification as you're blatantly misrepresenting my posts and presenting them out of order. I very clearly said "Scary" in response to spanish_emperor's comment about an Islamist "theocratic revolution," not sharia law, and the conversation proceeded from that point. Second, you'll notice I said "the Coptic minority in particular," not "exclusively," and I feel justified to say this as a soon-to-be Orthodox Christian. Please don't twist my words in order to forge some anti-Western fantasy, it's dishonest and irritating.

Just spare me the trouble if I don't really have faith in people's sincerity when they're typing about such issues behind a computer screen thousands of miles away with no real connection.

So why bother to comment in the first place?

If you really think that's true, tell me what happens under Sharia if a Muslim accuses a Dhimmi of a crime or if a Dhimmi insults Islam. Though I guess the latter issue is already a problem for Copts: Egypt sends Christian student to jail for insulting Islam

It seems Sobhi Saleh believes “Islamic sharia is the best system for Muslims and non-Muslims.” Brotherhood leader: We shall apply Islamic sharia

All it takes is thinking a bit before reacting to every perceived anti-Islamic comment.

If certainly modern Muslims want to twist sharia into something it classically wasn't, it's a whole separate issue. And it's pretty unnecessary to imply that I'm ignorant when really, I'm right.

Also, let's just go off an a completely crazy tangent and say -- has anybody asked Saleh why he thinks it's the best system fro both Muslims and non-Muslims? Your source doesn't actually provide any information. That's at least better than most major sources who would give a short byte, offer condemnation, and then pursue no real journalistic investigation.

Finally, it's pretty sad that in the West the dialogue on this issue is being dominated by obsessive paranoia about the Muslim Brotherhood when the reality in Egypt is a lot different, at least when it comes to the Presidency. There's a huge array of different candidates with different platforms that have good chances of winning. Hell, even former VP Omar Suleiman just jumped into the race at the last minute having reached well over the requirements for entry in a very short time.

<sarcasm>I'm with all the rest of the westerners writing off the "Arab Spring" because it hasn't brought thriving democracies to the entire Middle East. I mean, these people have had an entire year, one whole year!, to rid themselves of thousands of years of oppression. What is taking them so long? Democracy is easy! Just look how quickly the United States figured it out! Look how easily the French made the transition!</sarcasm>

In reality, it took the U.S. half a decade to even agree on a Constitution and that was after the first attempt (Articles of Confederation), which took even longer to pass, was deemed a failure. 60 years later we erupted into a civil war that killed 2% of our population. As for the MB implementing Sharia Law, well, when our constitution was written it was determined that if your skin was too dark you only counted as 3/5ths of a human being. If you lacked a penis you had even fewer rights. As for the French, I imagine most users of TWCenter have enough knowledge of history to know how clean their little revolution was.

Please give these people time to sort this out without blaming the incredible growing pains of any democracy on their religion or lack of education. They'll make mistakes. They'll pass good laws and bad. Innocent people will get caught in the middle and die. But eventually, maybe 10 years, maybe 100 years from now, if all these countries of the Arab Spring remain persistent, they too will have a functioning democracy that respects the rights of all human beings.
