In terms of effectiveness, I have to go with any elephants. Any of them. Man, you want to talk about hammer and anvil tactics, there aint no better hammer than that massive grey flesh tank. And I certainly don't mind watching my enemy get thrown 40 feet into the air.

If it's a missile unit and doesn't have a long range, I don't like recruiting them. If it's a melee unit and doesn't have high armour or efficiency, I don't like recruiting them. So in the end for me it's more to the pure units, not hybrids.

I use them as fodder because I'm a high-tech general who likes everything hnourable and neat (I don't like units running away from the enemy. also, if they run, gaps are created). And yes, IMO the bow is honourable, skirmishers are not. I simply don't like them.

That would be the rhomphaia, the Getai battle scythe. At bojieh, the elite hoplites in EB carried hoplons.

These guys are great functional infantry, always have them paired with some Agrianian Infantry for some daring missions.

Gaesatae for me aren't what I thought they'd be. Maybe because when I was attacking them (the AI, on VH) they had imba stats. When I use them (as AS) they are a little better than my infantry (which doesn't say a lot since their cost/effectiveness ratio is not very good).

the 2h rhomaphaia is a mighty weapon - one must respect that !

Syracousai Hoplyte is a very good-looking unit, nice pick there.

And Hypaspistai are somewhat awkward, expensive, small numbers and small AoR. Nice-looking units but I'd rather recruit 2 native phalanxes (AS) and be done with it. An even bigger dissapointment would be the armoured elite spearmen (Basilikon Agema, those with nice chainmail armour on their heads). Very good units but I was dissapointment because I thought they're gods, when they're actually pretty far from it.

They're also one of the most versatile infantry units. Make great auxilia for any faction that seeks to conquer and hold Egypt.

aww yeah, for me, playing egypt, they make great early front liners too

I love the kinsmen cavalry (IIRC they're the early BGs for Armenia): a golden fist of death. I do enjoy the super-heavy stormtooper inf and have been known to mod back in them for the Iberians. Three of those guys will take out a city.
