As an Aussie I think he's pretty good, insofar as I generally despise every politician on the planet. He's better than most, he's better than his predecessor, he's better than the assclowns we have in my country.
I would prefer him over my own nation's current executive.
I would prefer him over Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum.
He's a mostly charisma driven phenomenom but is certainly better than Bush.
Entirely overhyped & has so far entirely disappointed the world.
May as well be Stalin as far as I'm concerned.

I am an American so cannot vote, is he better than Bush I have to say yes to that but only barely. He has not changed much from the previous administration, other than the EPA has gone crazy. They actually tried to put a rule in place that farmers could not raise dust while farming. It lasted all of ten seconds but is just an example. He was smart enough to hasten our withdrawal from Iraq a bit, but his healthcare plan basically handed us to the insurance companies. Instead of getting creative by funding Medical education, reforming malpractice law, and allowing at the minimum health maintenance without the absurd costs now being handed too us by insurance companies.
He talks a good game but he is every much a captive of the system as any President we have had since Reagan. Between Bush Borrow and Spend and now Obama borrow and spend we have expanded our national debt by what 10 trillion. People whine about the cost of gas but in commodity terms it is not that expensive, the Dollar is simply in the tank. The inflation (a lagging economic indicator) that is going to hit us soon will be the worse than the seventies.
I just wonder who the poor idiot is going to be thats in office when inflation does come knocking, last time it was Carter, (that inflation was largely driven Johnson and Nixon) the only president we have had that actually cut the Federal payroll and reduced spending through harsh austerity measures. Reagan killed him in that election. Bush Sr. raised taxes and supported the Feds move to higher interest rates to defuse the inflation brought on by Reagan spending. Yep same thing he lost too Clinton. Clinton rode the tech bubble to success, kept most of Bush Sr's policies and then did something that no one will ever understand got in bed with Wall Street and repealed Glass-Steagel. For 60 years American Presidents Republican and Democrat alike viewed Wall St. as that sneaky Uncle you had to watch for. Then again Clinton was the first non-depression era President so perhaps he can be forgiven.
Moral is if you try to be a sincere economic president and inject a little pain in the sytem now to avoid worse pain down the road the American voter blithely shows you the door welcomes the next snake oil salesman. Obama has done nothing serious about our long term issues, neither do any of the Republicans they may actually be worse hypocrites but not by much. They all know that serious economic policies and forethought and you will not get a second term.

The story I heard was that the Clinton campaign was out of cash, and someone in the inner circle made a quick trip to New York and returned with a bag full of dollars. Sort of a pact with the devil.

Me: What!!?? What did you see??? Is it money? I need money! Is it something else?? TALK TO ME LIZ!!!
I read the same story, not sure about that. Too me NAFTA would be a bigger indicator of this than Glass-Steagel as the latter came at the end of the presidency. Too me what would I owe my time was over, I tend to credit naivete or perhaps a boost to the wife's political aspirations. NAFTA born under Bush Sr but never promoted with any degree of enthusiasm by that Administration hence its failure was promoted aggressively by Clinton and passed.
The passing of the old WW2 greatest generation in American politics really derailed us. For nearly 50 years these men and women with all their faults and mistakes(Vietnam, ousting of Kruschev, McCarthy(Eisenhower(R) shut him down and viciously to say the least)) and Moussadiq(the true root of our Iran issue)) were a steady guide for our country. By the 80's a new generation was taking over but relatively ineffectual in changing Washington, by the 90's they were gaining steam and in the last 12 years they have totally screwed our country over. They are simply polar opposites now without any degree of commonality, compare that too Inouye rabid liberal, and Dole fiscal hawk yet together the best of friends who between them had two working arms the other two lost or maimed on the battlefield in Italy. Others like Nunn(D), O'Neil(D) or Simpson(R) kept the extraordianry radicals in place as they conducted the business of our country. Now the radicals run it and fight each other and don't give a damn about our country only their self perceived position in it.

A deal with Wall Street is unlikely to be a one shot, but a continuing relationship that transcends party lines.

Yep. But I'd rather have good short term and bad long term than bad short term and bad long term. The Republicans are at least willing toup things less. It's not perfect, but it's a start.
It's like Paul Ryan's budget still grows the deficit, but a hell of a lot less than Obama wants.
In Summa: Obama doesn't even believe the ship is sinking. The Republicans think we should bail water. Ron Paul thinks we should throw the Democrats and Republicans off the ship to lighten the load.

A Praetorian's charge is to protect the government from the worst excesses of the people and if necessary the people from the worst excesses of the government.
In my opinion, an extraordinary man.

I can imagine no more comfortable frame of mind for the conduct of life than a humorous resignation.
