This reminds me of a 50s or 60s FLN attack; a driveby shooting on some unsuspecting Paras. Attacks on Algerian Jews, who were caught in between the fighting between the French and the FLN.

In France, a lot of people seem to believe the attacks were done by racists, neo-Nazis, etc... I am not so sure. This reads like an incident described in The Savage War of Peace or from The Batte of Algiers historical film.

TOULOUSE (Reuters) - The prime suspect for the killings that killed seven people in France was besieged Wednesday by police in a building of Toulouse where he was cut off and the conditions were created to lead the assault after the evacuation of inhabitants.

This man, who claims Al Qaeda according to Interior Minister Claude Gueant, exchanged gunfire with police, trying to negotiate with him.

The brother of the suspect was arrested in a separate location, added the minister, who is on site.

Three officers of the Raid, an advocacy group of elite, were injured and the building where the alleged killer was being evacuated to 8:30, allowing an assault, officials said police sources.

"The man talks a lot. He claims to be a mujahideen, of belonging to Al Qaeda. He said he wanted to avenge Palestinian children together to have wanted to attack the French army," said Claude Gueant.

In a separate response to the press, the public prosecutor of Toulouse and the head of the anti-terrorist section of the Paris prosecutor in charge of the investigation indicated that several operations were underway in the Toulouse area. The main suspect is a man aged 24 experienced police, they added.

A massive manhunt was launched Monday after the murder of a rabbi and three children in a Jewish school in Toulouse. The week before, three soldiers were killed in cold blood, according to the same procedure, one in Toulouse and Montauban two.

Each time, the author of the fatal shots came on a scooter and targeted his victims in the head.

STAYS IN AFGHANISTAN

The main suspect is a Toulouse, a French national, who has made trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan, said Claude Gueant.

"He has connections with people who claim to Salafism and Jihadism," said the minister. "Everything is done so that it can be brought in the best conditions to justice".

The mother of the suspect was brought to the scene but does not want contact with his son, he added.

The operation was launched around 3:00 am Wednesday in the residential neighborhood of Cote Pavee, in the east of Toulouse. The suspect is holed up in a five-story building in the 1970s contrasts with the rest homes, small houses.

Sergeant Vigne Street where the building is located a few hundred yards from the place of the first murder of a soldier, on March 11, and the Jewish school where four people were killed last Monday.

"It's a quiet," said a neighbor, Cathy Fontaine. "There is a creche there, behind schools, it really is a very cosmopolitan and more."

The public prosecutor of Paris, François Molins, who heads the investigation, insisted Tuesday on the "track terrorist" under French law, namely the will of the peace "through intimidation and terror .

What motivations, what trigger? how can anyone justify the killing of children as a way of protesting against the treatment of Palestinians or a war that occurred 50 years ago? and all in the name of a God. These spineless lunatics always seem to turn their guns upon the innocent and those who are least able to fight back and its usually children. Incidents like this involve children disproportionately, whether in Norway, America, Afghanistan, China or now France. Perhaps proof of the existence of the evil that effects these peoples minds which seeks to destroy that which is as yet largely unaffected by life's choices. Perhaps the shootings in Afghanistan caused this mans twisted evil mind to come across the idea but I hope all those in France's Algerian community demonstrate their abhorrence to this crime. If they don't then I foresee real ethnic divisions in the Country.

The news reports tell that he had not one gun be a veritable arsenal including automatics, so he probably didn't act alone and the French police need to catch him alive.

The 24-year old suspect of Algerian descent stated he belonged to al Qaeda and trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Several gunshots were heard after the raid began before dawn Wednesday, March 21, in a suburb 3 kilometers from the Ozar Hatorah school. Two policemen were wounded. His brother was arrested as his accomplice. The man barricaded in the house is believed to be the motorcyclist who also shot French paratroopers last Thursday. He was under police suspicion after that attack but not arrested.

The two brothers belonged to an extremist Islamic organization called Forsane Alizz. Police appear determined to capture the killer alive.

Perhaps this will (but won't) cause those who say NATO should pull out of Afghanistan and leave it to Taliban and civil war, would cause to reflect upon their opinion. It is a magnet and breeding ground for such evil minded people and they must be tackled effectively by a social/economic solution for the Country and not just a military one, requiring a complete a commitment not less. Pulling out of Afghanistan will not prevent these evil doers and will only give them justification for their actions.

Toulouse hunt: Kalashnikov-armed 'scooter-shooter' trapped in house




The suspected serial killer behind Monday’s murder of three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school, is trapped inside his home by French RAID special forces.
*The suspect, identified as Mohammed Merah, has barricaded himself in and has so far has refused to give himself up.

Two policemen were wounded in an attempt to storm the suspect’s house, which he repelled. Police claim they want him alive, so he can be brought to justice.

Reports suggest the suspect planned to surrender this afternoon.

Merah is heavily armed, believed to have an Uzi machine gun, Kalashnikov assault rifle and other weapons. If he does not surrender, police are expected to launch a second assault on the premises.

More identity details are emerging as the siege continues.
According to Kandahar prison director, he was arrested in Afghanistan for planting bombs and had been sentenced to three years in jail. But was broken out of prison in Taliban mass jailbreak, Reuters reports.
The suspect is a French national of Algerian descent. He claims connections with Al-Qaeda and gives two reasons for the attacks – “to take revenge for Palestinian children killed in the Middle East” and “to attack the French army because of its foreign interventions."

Police have been negotiating with the suspect since the dawn raid. Earlier the gunman exchanged a handgun for a phone, but recently he has stopped talking to police.

His mother and brother were brought to the scene, but she claims she has little influence on him while his brother has been placed under arrest.

The French Interior Ministry says Merah has been tracked for several years by the intelligence service. Merah is also believed to be behind the killing of three soldiers of North African origin last week.
The same Colt 45 handgun was used in all attacks and in each case the gunman was driving a Yamaha scooter with his face hidden by a motorcycle helmet.
