    Default Books on Roman History

Now I know that Edward Gibbon is an authority on Rome but his magnum opus is about the fall of the Roman Empire.

Are there any old or contemporary writers or scholars who have written on the rise of the Roman republic, the coming into being of the Empire and so on? If anyone can recommend some critically acclaimed works, it would be really appreciated!

For those interested in Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall, this is the best version available online:

I have The Atlas of the Roman World it's much more than an atlas and is pretty good reading (and cheap).

I really enjoyed The Discourses by Machiavelli. It's mostly Roman history, political science, and some examples that were contemporary at the time it was written.

You should check out Scullard. He wrote to books on Roman history of which From the Gracchi to Nero are most famous (or used). It was first published in 1959, and is a bit old. But still worth it, I would say.

An easy introduction to the History of Rome. Ancient Rome, the Rise and Fall of an Empire, Simon Baker.

I particularly like Indro Montanelli´s Storia di Roma. (Italian, Spanish or Portuguese edition)
