I need some help

So, I'm relatively fresh to the total war series (picked up shogun during the steam holiday sale) and I wanted to start modding ever since I got the AUM SHO mod in February and I'll list the problems I'm having below.

1: PFM 2.02 seems to be completely finicky (I get errors when trying to convert a fresh pack to a mod.pack) and it seems that most of the tutorials seem to use an older version. The one tutorial that I did find useful was this: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=443856, but did it in a patch version of a pack and it completely messed up the unit).

2: Because of the problem stated above I have just ended up copying patch 14 and used that instead of making a new one. I think as a result I can only change numbers and some stats (projectile damage, unit limits, costs, and so on) and I end up getting errors in the PFM or the unit or ability doesn't show up in battle if I try to add it).
