Thread: Idea: Contemporary Styled Unit Cards

Default Idea: Contemporary Styled Unit Cards

Any of us who has played Shogun 2 will have noticed that unit cards were drawn in classical Japanese style, like images drawn during the 16th century. Such an idea would be fascinating to see in a mod like DOTS, with cards drawn in the style of medieval art. There could also be variation between cultures and time, as early greek units could be depicted in a manner distinct from high english or late era muslim units.

Interesting idea! Probably the team won't do it because they have already invested so much time in the current unit cards. But.... Who knows it could be a great sub-mod!

Unit cards have not been done yet and we plan on something similar. The problem is that it's very time consuming task and we just don't have people to spare on eye-candy stuff so it's not top priority.

I hope that in the future afther you release the mod this idea can come true

Mm it's a nice idea, if it's time consuming (I have no idea how long it would take) then maybe it could be done after the mod is released by any members still looking to improve it

500 units with about 50 being available to each faction so its' 31*50 = 1500 unit cards. Each unit card needs contemporary art image, cropping it down and saving in the right format. Then testing it. All that ensuring the similar style at least across the factions and reasonable quality...

Yeah, I have maybe 300 contemporary images that suit. After 5 years of modding.
So, sure we need help, especially with someone assigning the pictures. It will take you max about 10 minutes to search here at TWC for a tutorial on how to assign images to unit cards. But I'm assuming that you like everybody just can't be bothered.
One of the reasons we don't have time with this stuff ourselves. There are things we are doing that we know no one else can do. Resurrection for instance has just spent the last 6 months creating a brand new modding tool that completely revolutionises modding (on pretty much any platform). And that is just one of the many parts of the EPIC process we've been undertaking.
Anyone that can help be bothered to help us with just a little, will be a great deal of help in fact.

I'll help 100% after I finish my exams next month. How does that sound? I should have a day off during the week so I can dedicate several hours (a week) to contribute.

There should be enough art available to keep you going for a while if you could.

I'll do it for sure! I would start right now but school really consumes all of my spare time because I'm a notorious procrastinator. Will this earn me a place in the credits list? (Don't mean to be so rude/quick to ask, just curious) Also, will I have to download the entire mod in its unfinished state to implement the artwork?

Nothing too fancy. You fill the spreadsheet with what you want and the mod makes itself out of it... :-)

The system is tailored for DotS at the moment which is why I have not released it publicly nor will it ship with DotS (for various reasons, mainly so that people don't screw up their mod installations). It will be made available for sub-modders during the approval procedure for their ideas (if they wished to use it of course) and if I find a free time I will adapt it to vanilla mod folder so anybody can use it to build their own mod(s).

As I mentioned. You have the data stored conveniently in the Spreadsheet (like all faction names and relevant information in following columns for example) and this system of tools will take this spreadsheet and create all (relevant) mod files from it. So in theory you don't even have to know how to mod! Though you still need to know the boundaries of different options naturally (like maximum number of factions). And you don't even have to go to /data/ subfolder of the mod since it's all done automatically.

And as Ross has mentioned this system is not M2TW or DotS specific but can be easily adapted to virtually anything like mods of other games or even coding of whatever or just for anyone's private need of converting spreadsheet data into desired structure or processing it into something completely different etc. etc. It's really modular. :-) But as of now it's hooked to DotS and to make it generally available with all the documentation and stuff would take me a while and I don't have the time to do it before DotS is released.

    Hi there,

I actually have some knowledge with photoshop, and I think I could help you guys make the art work for the unit cards. However, I would like to know exactly what type of cards are you looking for (an example picture would be great), and I could show you some test cards to get your approval or denial. What do you think?
