Default Scriptorium Winter 2012 Writing Competition - Poetry

Here are the submissions for the Poetry category. Please vote for your favorite one.

And bear in mind, anonymity is still required here. Authors of any works below may not declare what submission may be theirs, or in any other way ruin the anonymity of theirs or another member's submission. Those found to be doing so here or anywhere else will be rightly and sneakily punished (You were warned when you submitted to this competition that if you screw up you will be publicly flogged and embarrassed). The thread is for discussion of the articles at hand and voting, NOTHING ELSE.

One other note: Non fiction and the Themed categories did no receive enough submissions to stand in this contest alone, so the few entries into those categories have been combined here or in long fiction.

The Lament of the Arm-Chair General - Entry 1

The Lament of the Arm-Chair Genera I love total war,
But sometimes it makes me sad,
    Crash to desktop, damn.

The Way of The Sword - Entry 2

    Made out of Tamahagane,
    Heated to 800 Celsius,
hammered and folded as a Soshu Kitae,
    Polished on a togishi,
    Engraved as a higaki,
Inspected by the master, my Suka and Saya made, my Sageo attached.

They say I forged Japan, I am the soul of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
    I am a Katana!

    Suka = The hilt,
    Saya = The scabbard,
Sageo = And The ribbon around the blade holder
Tokugawa Ieyasu = First shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate.

The Song of the Celedhil- Entry 3

    The Song of the Celedhil
Forth from the west he came,
burning for love, like a silver flame.
Love he found, yet at a high price,
    he made himself a paradise.

Then war came upon the land,
many lives hung on one strand.
In all anger, pain and misery,
    elves and men achieved victory.

Then came peace and he did rest,
and put every warrior to a test,
for he knew that war would come again,
yet king of them he would remain.

Forth from the west he came,
burning for love, the silver flame,
found love and payed the high price,
    now he is at paradise!

Bushido: A Dead Mans Tale -Entry 4

    Bushido: A Dead Mans Tale
    Bushido: A Dead Mans Tale

Men who fight and die and love
    Evil rides apon a dove
Honor says that we must die
yet no one questions, wonders why

    evil wind a blowing
    send the seeds a sowing

Shogun sends us to our death
we must fight to our last breath
even if this day we win
deaths embrace shall yet be grim

    evil wind a blowing
    watch the roots a growing

    Evil comands our island chain
    arrows fall like deathly rain
from this war, peace must be born
or so we're told, my heart is torn

    evil wind a blowing
    where be you a going

Our great heros fought and died
    fearless men of dauntless pride
yet even they could not escape
deaths cold grasp, should we forsake

    Evil wind a blowing
    Death he is a crowing

Death is yet a greedy hand
    ever stretched across our land
Our leaders fill and quench its thirst
they hide in castles, our blood first

    evil winds a blowing
    rivers of blood a flowing

    Rain - Entry 5

    Rain
    "Rain"

    Friday came with rain,
    masking all my fear
    washing away the pain,

Gentle rolls of thunder I here
rolling sheets as the lightening nears,

Gentle visions of her I dream,
Like rolling waves of rain it seems,

Glorious clouds of love and delight
the gentle rain washes from my site,

    Golden hair and beautiful smile,
    Shining through the clouds awhile,

When her voice I sometimes hear,
the gentle wash of rain appears.....

The Strength of Men - Entry 6

    The Strength of Men

    Strider, Narsil, reforged anew.
Aragorn, White Tree, flourish in darkness.
    King, friend, counter of fates.

    Untitled - Entry 7

    Untitled
    Although I suck at poetry

    I still try it desperately

Not because I like to rhyme

As in that I’m not sublime

But I see this as a necessary step

Because I really want the rep

Victory Shall be Ours! - Entry 8

    Victory Shall be Ours!

    Victory shall be ours!

Lo there, over those barren mounds, most valiant sons of the Republic!
Behold the vast armies of the tyrants, set against our rightful path,
Blinded by their own oppression, their march seemingly chaotic,
Tens of thousands of doomed soldiers, eager to confront our wrath!

Bringing forth the Light of Freedom in this glorious age of reckoning,
As sole masters of our destiny, we will let the whole world know
That slavery will be abolished, no more nobles and no more king,
No more of these putrid remnants, only truth and valour will outgrow!

The time is ripe to weed out the evil, to forever banish the injustices.
Let’s overthrow these thrones of hatred, foul lairs of great impunity!
Let’s set this corrupt world ablaze and mold a new one from its ashes,
An eternal Temple of our Liberties, the most revered Abode of Equity!

O you deserving progenies of Mars, the vengeful god, fear not I say!
Act boldly and embrace your fate, defend your homeland and your colours,
Stand your ground and glare ahead, for hostile efforts will be sent astray!
Exult and praise the name of France, o brave ones, for victory shall be ours!

    War - Entry 9

    War
    The blood ran on floods
    War
The corpses got trampled by corpses
    War
The swords and armours are broken by it
    War
And no one was alive to tell

    All those strong soldiers
    Death
    All those proud princes
    Death
    All those greedy kings
    Death
All shall be destroyed and rot in hell

    The blood is drying
    Sorrow
    They disappear in the dust
    Sorrow
The weapons of kings rust in the rain
    Sorrow
And nothing will ever be well

    No Title - Entry 10

    No Title

    Honor sleeps soundly
    Cicadas' cries stir the dream
    The price I demand

    Poem - Entry 11

    Poem

There was a ruin of old,
    where few ventured forth.

    Untold riches await,
    for those who fear not.

    Should you come under greed,
    Beware! Your ruin awaits.

For those hearts full of greed,
    forget all well and good.

But should you be of stout heart,
    you may choose to enter.

You may find what you seek,
    and much more beyond.

For the secrets that lie within,
are beyond your realm of imagination.

    Enter now or leave now,
    the choice is yours.

    And above all,
    choose wisely.

The Open Wound - Entry 12
    The Open Wound
    Strewn across the grey-scraped sky,
are clouds of time, drawn by the eye.
Where shadows reign and echoes die,
Where hopes are loss and banshees cry.

    Dropped upon the burning earth,
move rebels in their vicious birth.
When bullets fly and kingdoms hurt,
The creeping creatures move in mirth.

Down in my hand the quill won't move,
stuck in scratches in a grove,
Drownd in ink my fingers bruise,
Nothing left, have I to prove.

    Winter - Entry 13

    [/fieldset2=Winter ]

Above our heads the clouds are rent,
To thunder they their anger vent,
With blinding flash and storm-cloud’s squall,
The icy drops of rain do fall,
And puddles form and rivers flood,
Fair fields of grass, now sticky mud.

And high above on mountain pass,
Iced roads shimmer like deadly glass,
A driver slams on failing brakes,
Traction lost the car skids and snakes,
He dared the roads in nature’s spite,
And skidding car is lost in night.

For bitter cold we wrap up tight,
    Thermals, jumpers, deny frost’s bite,
Cheeks and noses turn Rudolf red,
Whilst at grey skies we look with dread,
In coats we clad our sodden skins,
As striking down, the hail begins.

In spite of this, when winter nears,
Never do we break down in tears,
But wait instead with growing awe,
For thick snowfall on garden floor.[/fieldset2]

The Creature with no Name - Entry 14
The Creature with no Name Upon the sullen wind above
Through stunted growth of blackened shrub
Stood solid rock of ancient form
    Shattered thunder, a perfect storm
Around the seething mass of flame
Here lies the creature with no name

There*stand the ruins that time forsook
*A forgotten chapter in lifes long book
The raging pain of a people lost
Endless wars must have their cost
Entwined in threads of fates cruel game
Here lies the creature with no name

By the bloodstained hand of an*old regime
Came the downfall of the futile dream
As tears fell from countless faces
A scattered people thrown to the ages
    Behind the everlasting pain
Here lies the creature with no name

When Victory comes at the highest price
Gambled upon with deaths weighted dice
Fear can grip the strongest mind
    Locked in an eternal bind
Where surrender seems the only way
Here lies the creature with no name
