Word of Lorraine and Burgundian forces route at the battle of Metz at the hands of forces from Solland, Duke Frederick II of Upper Lorraine sent forces under the command of his trusted and experienced general, Arnulf III of Luxemborg to Lower Lorraine with orders of conquest. Along with Arnulf was Prince Conrad I of Hoium who acted as a deputy commander to understand battle tactics and means of leading an army for when he succeeded his father.
