Thread: Unit Editor

Well my last post is not the issue at all. This unit editor has caused more issues with my battle_model folder then it has solved. After saving the txt file it messed up each units listing for instance:
    13 MTW2_HR_Lance 13 MTW2_HR_Sword
    2
    21 MTW2_HR_Lance_Primary 14 fs_test_shield
    2
    18 MTW2_Sword_Primary 14 fs_test_shield.

This post as far as I know should look more like this.

    13 MTW2_HR_Lance
    13 MTW2_HR_Sword 2
    21 MTW2_HR_Lance_Primary
    14 fs_test_shield 2
    18 MTW2_Sword_Primary
    14 fs_test_shield.

Did I do something wrong with the unit editor? I am modifying a model db file in stainless steel 6.1. The game does not read the model db file any longer.

It's not messed up - rather aligned logically: the 2 at the end of the line in your old set up means the next 2 lines will be processed together, eg weapon and shield. It gets read just fine by the game.

What might have gotten messed up could be custom formatting that the editor can't handle. I do hope you kept a back up of the original modeldb file?

Between the editor's log and it's DOS window you might be able to find out what might have gone wrong.

I think it's the descr_mounts file - it has too many entries

Find out which mounts are not being used and remove them. Use bovi's checker.

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I love playing the medieval 2. Especially I love to play as France, so my first game was played as the faction.
Anyway, I have some simple newbie questions. I'm not sure where to ask this so I'll post it here. How and where can I save my mod? I'll make an simple mod that changes units' weapons and stats. Should I save it to the mod folder in the game file? And how can I do that?

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm bad at using computers.

You should create a new folder and save there a copy of the vanilla files, just in cases you do something wrong and the game crashes.
Use notepadd ++ for all the edits in the text files.
Next, you will have to open the export_descr_unit txt file, do your modifications, safe the file, and start a new campaign.

I am wondering whether the editor could change units' weapons.
I thought it can, but now, I'm confused. can it?

For example, I want to change Gothic knights' secondary weapon from clubs to swords.

    I mean maces, not clubs

That would require not only a change on that file but also a change in the unit model. Which basically means a lot of work on your part x)

thx a lot for the information!

so you mean I should search for the unit modeling if I want to change units' weapons, right?

Yes. If you want to do those changes, you should learn about unit modelling either with milkshape or 3ds Max.

It keeps giving me error then I try to load Divide and Conquer mod saying "Something weird happened while reading model bear_riders" Any idea as to why this error occurs?

Very likely an unusual formatting in that section of the modeldb file that the editor can't handle. The file is in the data\unit_model directory and opens with Notepad.

Whenever I try and import a unit model, the editor says that the name already exists and that I have to choose a new one- even though I've checked and there's nothing in the modeldb files. What should I do?

Further, when I manage to save a new model, it doesn't show up in any of the battle_model files- even if I hit "save exported units". Am I just a dummy and I'm using this tool wrong or..?

For the record I'm trying to import Broken Crescent units into the Complete Byzantine Unit Rosters Mod.

Never tried to import a unit with the tool but the unit may already exist in the EDU.

Edit: just tried importing and ran into the name issue as well, it appears a program bug. In the window where you select the 'import from' and 'import to' on top you have the model name you import from - you need to change that name. Once imported you can change the name back if you so wish and then save the changes.

Edit2: 'save' in the edit window will not save to the modeldb file, only to the editor! Essentially it's only a 'write' procedure. You will need to go into the editor's file menu and save a txt file with 'save bmdb' (saved in the editors directory) after you have done all your changes and then copy the content of it over your original modeldb.

    Summary:
    1. Always 'save' after making changes to\import a single model - this will write changes to the editor's memory
    2. Use 'file\save bmdb' to create the bmdb txt file when you have finished making changes
    3. Copy content of that file over the content of your modeldb file (always keep backup!)
