Javilinmen at the front usually tend to throw their spears 1 second before they get are reached by the charging horses, thus also functionning as meatshield against the surviving horses

Kay...As a Catholic Iberian faction my battleline is usually 2 javilins deep with heavy spears {mercs} standing behind them to charge any hotspots. I also have my cav on the flanks intercept AI cav as well. Yes you do have to do a fair bit of micromanaging and for a purist that plays only "realtime" it would probably end up being a big ole mess against any cav hvy AI stacks... I use one or two units of archers for isolation targets.

Usually I set up shop on inclines so that the javs have more range. The heavy cavs for the most part on H/H tend to skirt the battleline looking for an opening. Very few charge headlong into the javilins. Admitedly when they do and if you are distracted for a second it's quite the mess...Can you say..."friendly fire"..???...
