Many nice uniformes were issued at the start of the war but as the war was fought later on many men wore ragged and old clothes and whatever they could find, exspecially the Confederates. Many wore their civillian clothes or colored them a butternutt color. Later in the war soldiers on both sides looked more like a mob of militia than soldiers.

As above. 1860-1861, many men were part of local militia, especially in the south, these militia groups were formed into companies of state regiments (Danville Blues, Carolina Cadets, etc). While these each had very unique uniforms prior to the Civil War, by the time battles started and campaigns dragged on, these fancy uniforms were all but gone. The only exception is some northern Zouave uniforms that were state or local financed and continued throughout the war.
