Default [Preview] Lordship of the Isles

    Introduction to the Faction
“Better a castle of bones, than a castle of stones”
Highland and Island Scots were warriors to the bone. Their ancestors were a mix of warlike Celtic tribesmen and Viking soldier-seafarers, and the two cultures had fused together to create a violent society of tempestuous, ruddy skinned men. Life in these parts was based around subsistence agriculture, fishing and hunting, fighting and feuding. This was a world in which conflict was a part of daily life.

Far from their Scandinavian brothers, stuck in the middle of a warring Britain, these Islanders are at the door step of opportunity or destruction. Two kings, each with his own agenda and realm, but together sharing a common Viking ancestry and warrior spirit, Harold Olafsson and Ruaidhri Somerland, sit together as Norsemen and lead their people against the majority of English, Welsh, Irish, and Scottish inhabitants of the Isles. It will take a strong leader to unite the Kingdoms of Mann and the Hebrides in order to survive and prosper in this bitter place.

    The Characters

    The Banners

    Hebridean Army

The Lordship of the Isles will rely on reckless and powerful infantry however the challenge this faction would have is to deal with enemy cavalry force along having no horsemen.

    Luchd-ŕirde an Tighearna

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Luchd-ŕirde an Tighearna are chosen from the strongest and most fierce warriors in the Hebrideans, these men are the lord’s personal bodyguard. Each is equipped with heavy Gaelic cloth, mail armour, and the Sparr (Two-handed long axe). These weapons, along with the spirit of their Viking ancestors, make these men some of the most feared men in all of Britain.

    Uachdaran

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Uachdaran are noble landowners and as such these men are equipped with the best armour and weapons in the Isles. Unlike many of their Hebridean brothers, these men bring the finest swords and shields into battle. Even though the Uachdaran are of noble birth they can be counted on to engage their enemies with reckless savagery.

    Galloglaigh

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Galloglaich are the greatest warriors in the Kingdom of the Isles, and possibly all of Britain. These men were of great strength, size, and courage. Each Galloglaich strikes an imposing figure, wielding a massive two-handed axe. More than any other piece of his equipment, it was the axe that symbolized the battlefield power of the Galloglaich. Their responsibility was 'to take the van and rearguard of the army'. The Galloglaich’s primary battlefield role was to lead the vanguard in the attack, and form the rearguard in retreat. Whatever the size of the force they served, their role remained the same. The Galloglaichs were disciplined, skilled and ferocious, and are a force to be feared on any battlefield.

    Sleaghadair

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Sleaghadair, like the Gaisgeach, make up the levy infantry of the Herbrideans. Each is armed with a shield and spear. Along with leather armour and a warrior spirit these spearmen can stand the test of battle and the charge of enemy horse.

    Boghadair

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Each man of the Boghadaira is a skilled Hebridean archer. Trained in the art of the bow and skilled in hand to hand combat, with the axes and swords they carry into battle, these men are a versatile unit of the kingdoms army.

    Gaisgeach

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Gaisgeach are common men drawn as levies in the time of war. Armed with basic swords and axes, they are a formidable force on the battle field. Although these men do not carry the same high standard of equipment as the Hebridean nobles, their shared warrior ancestry cause them to be bezerkers when their lord calls upon them.

    Tuathanach

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Tuathanach are peasants drawn into the army at a time of war. Lacking good armour and weapons these men cannot be counted on to hold an enemy attack. Armed with javalins and trained as skirmishers the Tuathanach are used to fill the ranks of the Hebridean forces.
