Default A "short" history of the Egyptian army

Sorry everyone, but this post will get giant…

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Well I do not know exactly which date will begin this MOD, but I suggest that is the beginning of the reign of Sesotris III. How was Egypt at this time? Not very well, a Pharaoh (unfortunately I can not remember his name) imposed a political system where Egypt was split into numerous provinces, each of which was ruled by a man of confidence of the king.
    Sesotris III

But these governments over time have become increasingly powerful and began to form their own militias and armies and dream with independence.

Starting the MOD in this period the player may try to "recapture" Egypt of a peaceful way as it did Sesotris III or maybe fight the leaders of the provinces.

At this time the Egyptian army was composed of primarily of infantry, the horses were not "discovered" so there was not any kind of chivalry. Much of the army consisted of archers. The army was formed primarily by ordinary people who temporarily took up arms, there was a well trained army, since the thirst for conquests of the Egyptians was not as big as the Roman they would not give such importance.

    Egyptian infantry

The biggest threats at the time (besides the threat of a civil war) were rebellions in the region of Canaan, and some Libyan attack.
After Sesotris III Egypt lives many years of peace, but in 1650 bc the Egyptian army was devastated by the Hyksos, why? Because the attackers had two advantages, first of their weapons and armor were more resistant than those of their enemies, but the biggest factor was that they had:

    Horses.

With these advantages the north of the country was conquered by generating a dark period in Egyptian history about which we know little. There are reports of an escape from real family to Nubia.

The next great crisis was caused by the invasion Hittite bad diplomatic policy of Akhenaten (Pharaoh who disowned the gods on behalf of Aton)

The situation was controlled by Pharaoh Horemheb (133 bc), and the war with the Hittites was not finished with the peace pact of Ramses II (1290 BC).

Monthu is the principal egyptian god of war, he had preminence above Upaut (Wepwauet) who was "the way oppener" and a more death-cult god. But Monthu is even the portector god of few pharaos like Mentuhotep II or Mentuhotep III, while Upaut is a secondary war god. And the pharaos even chosed Monthu as the epitome of physical strength and warrior quality, and was asociated with the bull.
And Seth is not a bad god, neither Upaut or Monthu, the balance between the good and the evil was necessary for the Maat or universal order, and they were protector gods of Egypt and the pharao, symbols of the power of Nature, like Seth god of thunder, lightning, war and dessert... And in Egypt, you must know, lot of gods share office and powers or were manifestations of other gods like Hathor, Isis and Sekhmet (Sekhmet was just the avenger of Ra, the incarnated fury of Hathor, daugther of Re-Horajty, and Isis is another aspect or reincarnation of the mother-goddes, which in some aspects was Hathor herself).

I happen to be reading about Ancient Egypt lately. So, just a few constructive (I hope) thoughts:

As a rule of thumb, the bigger the timeframe, the larger the geographic expanse. Within the constraints of RTW, you cannot hope to plausibly represent history as a series of small scale events over a very long period. Tribes, rulers and minor cities rise and fall in the course of centuries, but the TW format dictates that the map is static, and the balance of power shifting in one direction only. If you cover a large timeframe, you have to focus on major powers and forget their internal developments. In that context it seems logical to look at the New Kingdom era and have the map dominated by Nubia, Egypt, the Mitanni, Hittites and Assyria. Both the Hyksos and Sea peoples are anomalies at this scale. BI allows limited possibilities to represent them as "barbarian invasions". I think in general BI has quite a few options that could be of interest.

I look forward to this mod, it's about time Kemet was done in some detail. A great period in history.

Of course not. I would have posted it in this thread if it was. I posted several times though that work is being done constantly, but I don't like showing stuff that is WIP. In short: you will see updates here, but only when something is finished

    I agree

To all you enthusiasts: I've managed to get my map loaded, but I'm still filling it. Trees, waterbodies, resources etc etc alot of coding and editing in GIMP but I'm getting there. You can expect a basic map preview within a few weeks. That's not a promise, but a gentle suggestion of a timeframe

I've also been collecting all of my info and research so I should soon be able to contact the moddelers and skinners about getting some work done on units. So again: work is being done, but communication is limited to updates on finished work

Nothing happened, if you look better you'll see Boustro's usertitle says suspended by request so he asked for it himself. He'll come back, probably something in RL that caught him. The mod isn't dead, don't worry.

lolIsuck is right. I had to study for exams and wanted some time off from the site. I'm back now but once exams start (end of May) I'll be gone again. That doesn't mean I'm not working on this mod though. Like I said before, I'll only show stuff I'm satisfied with. So no worries, I'm still alive and so is this mod haha.

Correct. They were a loose group of different peoples and tribes, including Phoenicians but also Italics, Greeks and others

Quick question to you guys following this: I'm making the Nile sailable (though a CTD is still present because of it) but how many ports should I create? Should every city/region located near the Nile banks have a port or just the important religious and military centers?

Well, if the cities are located near the Nile banks, why shouldn't they get their ports?

Just. But you should don't give a port for city.

If you want, I should fixed the bugs of map. Give me the files of the map and the files forworked ( for ex, if you add new unit in descr_start I must have EDU etc...). [mp me]
And I have a question, you want add religion for this mod ? ( I think specialy the religion of Amun/Aten )

I'm not sure if the map will be able to deal with all the possible trade lines if I give them all ports (probably 50+ ports along the Nile) AND I don't want to give Egypt too much wealth from naval trade because it would completely unbalance the game

I'm working on the map now and I have a basic version almost done, but still need to do coding in descr_strat. map_climates, map_ground_types and map_heights are ready but I still need to work on map_regions and the rivers in map_features I also want to further improve the course of the river, because it is quite crooked right now. I'll finish all the files needed and if I still can't get it fixed then I'll send you all the information in a pm and see if you can see where the problem lies with my map

For those of you following, here's one version of the basic map. The boundaries of the map will not change anymore, but I've improved the course of the Nile river since this version and I've also gotten rid of a few weird kinks in the flow. I'm always trying to improve the map, but like I said this should give you some idea of what the map boundaries will be like
