Welcome to this thread where all the news will be posted regarding an upcoming mod called Ancient Egypt - Total War! You can find all sorts of information regarding the who and what of this mod below and please show your support in this project. I am proud that my 2000th post will be the start of this thread and hopefully a new approach to RTW modding...
INTRODUCTION
Hi everyone! I am Boustrophedon and am the modleader of this new project which I have called Ancient Egypt - Total War or AETW for short. My main task will be to follow up on progress as well as mapping, coding, research and pretty much everything that needs my attention. I will introduce my team later on in this post.
First of all, I'm sure you're all wondering about the specifics of this mod. Well as you can probably guess my mod will focus on Egypt and it will be ancient hehe. Here are some more details on what you can expect from this mod:
As you can see this is an ambitious project! Almost everything text-related will be overhauled from the ground up, many changes in the 2D aspect of the game as well and finally a well-balanced but challenging mod that centers on Egypt.
- New UI
- New custom music
- New system of traits and ancillaries (Egyptian offices + military/civil career + religion)
- New factions and unit roster
- Completely new map
- Complete overhaul of building trees
- New quotes
- New names and family tree
- ...
The name of the mod is not random. The main and thus heaviest focus will be on Ancient Egypt during the timeframe of its greatest and weakest moments, namely 1580-1070 BC. That's nearly 1000 turns to complete the subjugation of the known world. In the first release only Egypt will be playable but depending on the succes of the first release and real life issues we will make all factions playable eventually.
For more information read the sections below.
FACTIONS
AETW will have 8 factions in the first release, though more might be added over time. Here is a short introduction on each of these 8 factions:
The Egyptian Empire:
At this point in history the former superpower Egypt has lost much of its prestige. The Delta has been lost to the Hyksos invaders and the oasis trade routes as well as the Nubian mines have slipped from Pharaoh's grasp as well. Nestled deep within Middle Egypt the Pharaoh bides his time to build up his forces and from Karnak he will reconquer his kingdom. The Egyptians will have to deal with a vast host of enemies before being able to reunite their kingdom under the rule of the one and true Pharaoh. The Egyptian military relies on light infantry and ranged combat as the scorching sun permits no heavier armourd than leather and tunics.
Sea Peoples:
A mysterious group of peoples and nations who sailed the great Sea and invaded Egypt on a regular basis. Many Egyptian sculptures and inscriptions have been dedicated to the battles against the Sea Peoples, who were a constant threat and danger to the stability of Egypt and especially the Nile Delta. They will have some settlements but they will mostly appear in the form of scripted armies on your coasts once you have reunited your kingdom. Their military places heavy focus on close combat and heavy infantry, supported by a variety of lightly armoured soldiers.
Desert Tribes:
The Desert Tribes are the clans and tribes located in both the eastern and western desert. Their main sources of wealth are the trade routes that pass through the desert and the produce of their oases, mainly figs. Control over these trade routes and fertile lands is crucial to the peace in Egypt but despite their wealth they will look with envy upon the fabulous wealth of Egypt and their raids must be stopped. As Pharaoh you will have to ally with them or crush them. Their military is composed of camel warriors and lightly armoured soldiers who prefer ranged combat to any close quarters warfare.
Medjai:
The Medjai are a clan in Middle Egypt who entered history as the bodyguards of the pharaohs after their lands were conquered by Egypt. Though their power is limited and they posess only a few regions, they boast fierce warriors who are accustomed to fighting in the heat and grinding their adversaries in the dust. The pharaoh will have to deal with them at one point or another. Leaving such dangerous men at his back is an invitation to rebellion.
Nubian Kingdom:
The Nubian Kingdom has recently achieved independence after sensing the might of the pharaoh crumble and it is determined to defend it. After taking control of the massive fortress at Buhen, the road into Nubian lands is tightly guarded and its people can live in peace and safety. That security comes with a cost though and the increased demands on the military have depleted the Nubian treasuries. Its rulers have found a perfect solution though. Though the Nile is guarded by Egyptians and trade cannot pass through it unmolested, the desert is under control of its tribes. Historically the Nubians and the Hyksos were close allies and traded through these desert routes, depriving the Egyptians of the trade and income they crave.
Hyksos:
These people have come from the eastern lands and Asia, plundering their way through the Delta before settling in and taking control of the entire region, displacing the pharaoh and his court. They brought a new invention: horsemanship and chariots. Their military innovations assured quick and easy victories over the already weakened Egyptian state. Control of the Delta and reuniting the country is the first mission of the Pharaoh and war with the Hyksos will come swiftly, for both are keen on expanding their lands.
Hittite Kingdom:
The Hittite Empire was just as powerful as Egypt and boasted fierce warriors as well as a proud history. Historically they often clashed for control of the Levant or Retenu as the Egyptians called it and the ports of that region are vital to a trade network. These two giants will have to face each other at some time. The world cannot have two masters and Pharaoh must show these people that His divine will is not to be ignored.

I was hoping I'd have some previews ready for you of the map, but errorless CTDs are the scourge of my life. Keep an eye out for updates here!
