Default Scriptorium Winter 2012 Writing Competition is here!

Scriptorium - Winter 2012 Writing Competition

The Scriptorium is proud to bring you the Winter 2012 Writing Competition. Sorry, no hot cocoa, supplies were limited and we're bloody selfish.

This competition will have a themed category as well as non-themed categories to encompass all tastes in writing. It's a freestyle competition, with the only rules being that you submit to one of the five categories: Themed: Shogun (greater than 500 words at least, conforms to theme in obvious way, theme explained further down in post), Long Fiction (greater than 1000 words), Short Fiction (500-1000 words), Non-Fiction (greater than 500 words), or Poetry (any form of poetry, though we prefer you keep them short).

Submission time begins now, and will last throughout the month of February, ending on March 1st. Voting will begin within a week after submissions are closed.

Only 4 medals are up for grabs. One gold, one silver, and one bronze, plus the Librarian's Choice award. The top placing entries in each category will move on to a final round of voting to decide medal winners. Runner-up and second runner-up in each category will receive rep rewards, 50 for runner-ups and 25 for second runner-ups. Assuming adequate entries to each category, only 3 out of the 5 will win a medal. Fourth and fifth place in the finals will be given 75 rep and 60 rep respectively.

The Theme for this competition is titled simply Shogun. What we are looking for here is any story pertaining to something to do with the Japanese Shogunate. For those struggling to think of something good to do for this, I highly recommend taking any AAR you may have of a Shogun 2 campaign, and fleshing it out into a much more detailed story that focuses little on anything strictly Total War and just on adding your own background story to events that are predetermined by ones that actually happened in your campaign. Take out the video game aspect of it, and turn it into a movie. That is just my suggestion though, if you can write something completely different that pertains to the theme, you are more than welcome to. Do not feel too restricted, what exactly you write about is up to you, if you are in doubt whether your story is staying to the theme, feel free to ask. It just has to pertain directly to Shogun in some obvious way. Keep in mind though, if we do not feel your story conforms enough to the theme, we will ask you if you would like to change it or rather have is submitted to a short fiction/long fiction category instead. If we receive no response from you on it, it will automatically be placed in another respective category.

Anyone may enter, but only one submission per category per member is allowed. However, each member is allowed only one award no matter what, so if more than one of your submissions makes it to the finals, only the one with the highest amount of votes will qualify.

Sign up now, before they take the hobbits to Isengard.

    Competition Rules
    Categories:

    • Theme: Shogun
    • Fiction (1000+ words)
    • Short Fiction (500-1000 words)
    • Nonfiction (500+ words on History, Religion, Morality, etc.)
    • Poetry (any form of poetry, though we prefer you keep them short)

Submission deadline: The last day for submitting your entries is February 29th, 2012.

The librarians are split up into a few teams to handle each category. You are free to submit your entry to any librarian, but it would be quite dandy if you could submit it to any librarian overseeing the category you are submitting to.

    Themed: Nyxos, Lord William, Hader
    Non-Fiction: Påsan, Vatterholm
    Short Fiction: Supermoler, Nyxos, SonofPeverel
    Long Fiction: StealthFox, SonofPeverel
    Poetry: Legio

NO MORE THAN ONE ENTRY PER MEMBER IN EACH CATEGORY. MEMBERS MAY WIN ONE MEDAL ONLY. IN THE EVENT THEY WIN MULTIPLE MEDALS, ONLY THEIR ENTRY WITH THE HIGHEST OVERALL VOTES WILL RECEIVE A MEDAL, AND THEIR OTHER SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY EQUAL OR LESSER MEDAL. Librarians shall clerically administer the competition. Librarians shall not be voting on medals except on the "Librarian's Choice" medal, which is a private poll and will be announced in the end with the rest of the awards. A public poll shall be created and the general membership shall select a medal winner among the submissions for each category.

Submissions for this competition must be unique works written specifically for this competition, or otherwise not posted on TWC in the past.

Anyone caught asking for votes during the voting phase in any way, shape or form, on or off this forum, will have their submission immediately disqualified from the competition. In the event this does happen, I can personally guarantee you that you will not know of your entry's disqualification until after voting. This will leave you thinking you were able to sneakily lobby for votes behind my back, and just when you think you've got it, I will slap you hard with my pimp cane. So please ladies and gentlemen, don't pull any crap like this on me, I will see it coming and I will embarrass you for it. Don't say you haven't been warned.

    Awards

    Awards for the winners:
Medallions shall be decided by the general membership.
Reputation shall be decided by the Chief Librarian. As it stands, 50 rep for non-medal winning runner-ups and 25 for non-medal winning second runner-ups.

    Librarian's Choice Award:
The winner of this award shall be decided by Librarian popular vote.

The award polling will begin after the submissions deadline and polling will be closed after roughly two weeks. Finalist voting will stay open for roughly 10 days. Winners will be announced within the days of the polling coming to a close.

The Chief Librarian is solely responsible for all aspects of the competition. The decisions of the Chief Librarian is final.

The Librarians will at their discretion include entries into the Scriptorium. Submission to the Contest does not assure the article will be archived in the Scriptorium.

In case you have any queries, feel free to Private Message a librarian, or post your question here.
