Hér Éafa Heaðumunding fela féonda ofslóh
To mark the bounds of the wild highlands and guard the land of his folk, Éafa son of Heaðumund built high a noble hall where once his father had laid a cairn of victory. A stronghold too he had reared below it, a haven for those dwelling near.
Many times it was beleaguered soon after, as when one Brodda the Halt with numerous men came upon it, wild and greedy. He essayed to take that fastness in great onslaught when few were guarding. Yet the walls proved high and strong – doomed were all that dared come within bowshot. And it is said Éafa himself, amused by the efforts of his foes, bade his bowmen hold their arrows and picked up a stone and cast it down below, killing the captain of that murderous band.
Éafanheall that stead was called. A fitting name, for in the tongue of his people it meant Rock of Éafa as well as Hall of Éafa.
Assault is upon its walls once more as a great host of foreign marauders and usurpers is drawing near. With Heaðumund’s son laid to rest many winters ago, Éadríc Eorl and his men of the House of Fyrna are entrusted with defending this hall and land, though they are with few. Yet hope remains that aid will reach them in time from the Fyrd of Lewes and others willing.
The english defenders are outnumbered by the amassed viking hosts marching on Éafanheall, and each man is irreplaceable in this battle. Relying on the strength of the stronghold they must withstand the assault, fighting on the doorstep of the great hall itself, if necessary.
