Edit: I am playing slightly modded M2. I added a couple of characters and units.

Funnily enough, I saw a famous naval battle for the first time in one of my games recently as well.

pretty cool. I have played a lot more with the campaign. I am in the midst of a fierce battle with the Mongols at Kiev and The Timurids have just spawned. The only factions left are: Sicily(Me), Poland(my ally), Russia(neutral), Mongols(my fiercest enemy), The Timurids(neutral), Egypt(enemy), and the Papal States(neutral). I control all of the college of Cardinals and hold over 75 regions. The Mongols are formidable foes. I had two full stacks against a half stack and they won with their Khan who had 10 command and 10 dread.

It seems that these famous battles are heroic victories.

Yes this happens on sea as well, there is some harcoded limit to the number of famous battles per map but i never got the chance to keep count of it. & yes these are always heroic battles when the victor has a less BOP ratio.
