Default Brytenwalda [A Britain 636 IH]

Edwin, King of Deira, has died some years ago, his great rival, Cadwallon ap Cadfan, king of Gwynedd, after ravaging the north with his armies, was killed by Oswald the new lord of the north, the ambitious son of Æthelfrith and Edwin's sister, he now rules on Bernacia, Deira and Elmet.

Oswald the powerful, who has proclaimed Brytenwalda, who is willing to dispute the title?, Who is willing to confront the most powerful king in Britain?

The world is at war, only respects the law of the sword and spear. There are realms that are born and die every single day, kings die on the battle fields.

On East, the Angles, Jutes consolidate domains and claim for more land.
On South, the Saxons, led by Cynegils, have teamed up with Oswald, cornering Penda, king of the Angles de Mierce, The March. Will Mierce resist being surrounded by enemies?
King Penda is bloody and violent, many kings have been killed by his sword and promises to kill many more. He call to meet the men under his command to go to war.

Meanwhile, Christianity extending from Centware (Jute Kingdom), and it is converting the barbarians.

Pushed against the coast, the Welsh are fighting for every inch of land, but are too divided, dreaming of the return of a king to unify all and lead to the final victory, they dream with an incoming King Arthur. But Arthur is dead, and all eyes look to Cynddylan, the king of Pengwern, brave as a lion, but unable to join under his banner all the other kings.

And Gwynedd, a fertile kingdom in great warriors, is silent, unable to hear the sound of the advancing armies threatening their land. Gwynedd cry to Great Cadwallon, scourge of the Angles and Saxons, who has left a son, a King 3 year old.

In the snowy lands of the North, fight the Irish, Dal Riata, and the Picts. Their kings share blood, but the Irish are invading in land of Cait, kingdom of the Picts. The Picts, with their faces painted and their female warriors, are now united under one king and they are stronger than ever.

Across the sea, in Ireland, Domnaill mac Aedo, of Ui Neill´s clan has emerged as High King in Temair after defeating his enemies. But it isnt more than a prestigious title that recognizes him as the most powerful of the island. Around him, clans are fighting for land, women and cattle in fratricidal wars. The war in Ireland is endemic.

Who can bring light to this world of war and misery?

    Spoiler for Map

Each unit is a Warband of 30 men

It takes one day to march into another province, and as such, only troops in an adjacent province can reinforce.

Unit strength is divided into 6ths, and will be rounded up or down after the battle, this will determine cost to reinforce. (which will essentially be the number of 6th's of the original price)

You may raise levees, but note that the larger your kingdom becomes, despite being able to raise more levees, you will generally be able to raise less per province, as well as encounter more uppity nobles. So be careful if you go on a distant campaign, for, as the saying goes, "Usurpers gonna usurp." Similarly to levees, you may call for mercenaries, and the vultures who feed off of death and destruction will come to your aid for a price. That price and their quality is dependent on relative wealth and the like, and their presence in your army will give you a number of events which will affect availability of mercs in the future, as well as AI (and possibly player) factions opinions of you. (eg: If you sack a monestary, the mercs will be happy because gold, but other Christians will be rather P/O'd)

An addendum in regards to fortifications: You may garrison your troops in fortification, but be careful, as each level of fortification can only suppirt 100x its level in troops (a level one can support merely 100 men, etc.) Otherwise, you will begin to starve and men will both desert (possibly to the enemy) and die.

    Notes on sieges:
To successfully carry out a siege, you have several actions you may wish to take.
[*]Build Sanitation - Build sanitation for your army so that disease does not affect your attacking force.[*]Surround settlement - Completely surround settlement, which will damage morale and affect food supplies. Otherise, the enemy can hold out nearly indefinitely in a planned siege. Also take into consideration provinces that have ports.[*] Build siege equipment - This will take a full day, but afterwards you will be prepared for an assault, if you dare.[*] Be a smart commander. Think about good ideas, if you are besieged, try to counter the enemies moves, think of what will destroy morale, I won't hand feed any more options, but be creative and be practical. And it never hurts to outnumber the enemy.

    Buildings and Economics
You will make money by building province improvements. There are 5 levels of each building type

Level 0: Standard except for Training Centers, and Churches. In which case costs 1000
    Level 1: 1500
    Level 2: 2500
    Level 3: 3000
    Level 4: 4000
    Level 5: 5000

The Types of building and their benefits are as follows:
Note: Everything takes one turn to build, and during that time you may not build anything else.

Fortification - Self Explanatory, the better your fortifications, the better you are when besieged. Note that fortifications at this time generally mean piling dirt better around an old roman wall. Don't expect to have cannon towers mowing down your enemies. See military rules for more information.

Training Grounds and Military Housing - The higher the level of your military buildings, the better you will do in combat This is generally more passive and is something that will be taken into consideration during battles by the moderator. A Level 5 will increase the odds in your favor for each battle related dice roll.

Market - This is what brings money and people to the city. Each level of market brings twice as much money into the city, a level 0 market (standard) brings in 100 per turn. A level one brings in 2,000 and so on. A level 5 can also loan the royal family money, up to 5,000 scillingas, with a flat interest rate of 10%

Roads - Charging tolls to use better and better roads. Each level brings 50% increase in profit. Level 0 brings in 50, a level one brings in 75, level two: 150 and so on. Having better roads also allows faster army movement (A level 5 allows you to move one more province in a day, so long as the provinces are connected) you may finance roads in your allies land.

Farms - Taxing the farmers is a favorite pastime of kings, similarly having larger farms may bring benefits like free peasent levys when the going gets tough. Each increase in farm size increases money by 50%. Level 0 brings in 100, Level 1: 150, etc.

Mill - The only real industry possible, each level increases profit 100%. Level 0 brings in 50, Level 1: 100

Port - Only able to be built in a sea-board province. Level 0 brings in 100 and each following level doubles income. Each level 3 port allows you to have another trade agreement, each level 5 allows you to have yet another one. Needless to say, ports are important (didya see what I did thar?)

You may also engage in trade agreements with other factions. You may either attempt to negotiate it yourself, or let the dice settle it. There are 5 levels of trade agreements, You must have a merchant building of one level lower than the trade agreement level you have with any particular state, and you may only have up to 3 trading partners, unless you have ports. Note that one does not negotiate a 'level' of trade a agreement, but merely negotiates for trade, the level of which is determined by the merchant building present.

    The levels are as follows:

    Level 1: 200
    Level 2: 500
    Level 3: 800
    Level 4: 1,500
    Level 5: 2,500

    Faction treasuries start at 1,000

You are required to keep track of your provinces, money, and diplomacy.

This is awesome! I would like to claim Bernaccia/Northumbria.

Though, I thought that in this period Mercia was top-dawg of England.
