    Default Editing the EDU causes CTD?

    I've been trying to play around a bit with the EDU, but it seems even small changes causes the game to CTD with the message "Odin save us! Something went wrong and only Thor knows what. I'll just crash now" or some such.

    Even just changing the damage or range of the Norman Crossbows, gives this message.. how come?

    What do you use to edit?
    IIRC I had ctds when tried something other than Notepad (or was it Wordpad? I don't remember).

    It shouldn't, as Abyrvalg says other editors might encode the text incorrectly.
    Were there but a tree in this godforsaken place i would have hanged myself.

    I just used Notepad...
    All I did was change a single number, say attack 9 (see spoiler) to 10, and it would CTD. As soon as I changed it back, it would load correctly.
    I've done my fair share of minor modding in various other mods without incident, so I'm pretty sure it's not a context / encoding issue.
    Since the error message clearly is custom, could there be some sort of "anti-cheat" function that checks if the EDU is identical to the original one, or some such?
    The system.txt.log doesn't state anything specific I can spot.

    Did you put it on trace? It sometimes shows the error. There's no such anti cheat function i have no idea what's going on, if it was a map edit or a text edit that wasn't showing up i'd suggest deleting the map.rwm or strings.bin but neither would affect that file.
    Were there but a tree in this godforsaken place i would have hanged myself.

    Yup, I have same error with Notepad. Extremely strange.

    Exactly, neither of those should affect the EDU.
    It might be worth noting that I only tried editing the file after running the "Baptized_Normans.bat" file.
    Is this the first notice of an error like this, or is it replicable?
    The simple change of the Norman Crossbow attack from 9 to 10 would be enough to cause this error.
    Does the same thing happen with others in the same situation, if they try the same? I'm playing as the Normans if that's not obvious.

    Just to clarify: it only crashes when you edit the EDU? And does it matter if it's a Norman unit, or any unit in question?

    Yep, when I edit it.
    And just have tried to edit Peasant Crossbowmen with same result.

    Right, I'll just await a comment from the team then, since this obviously is a issue specific to this mod and some of their changes.

    That is weird since i have edited the EDU for my Ui Neill submod and didn't get any crashes from it.
    Were there but a tree in this godforsaken place i would have hanged myself.

    The issue seems to be with the save-game.
    Making any sort of change, and then trying to load my save-game, either autosave or manual save causes the crash. Starting a new campaign seems to work fine though.
    First time I've seen the EDU not being savegame compatible.

    Oh, yes of course. Any changes made to the EDU will cause your save games to not be compatible.

    Really?
    This is the first time I've ever experienced that, and I've been doing that to all other mods (SS, TA:TW, to mention a few) without any problems.

    I mean, I could understand if I were removing ownership of a unit from a faction who still had those units in the savegame, but simply editing unit stats? That's a new one for me!

    Changes to the EDU and EDB are instant and apply to your current game. Sometimes it takes a turn or two for changes to the EDB to take effect.

    Must have been a text-formatting issue. This is actually unknown, what you are experiencing. As somebody mentioned above, unit ownership changes can cause a crash or else: faulty unit model changes, unit text/ui name changes and such, but not simple combat value changes ie. if you change a number, unless the number you have tried is incompatible with the game-engine.
