using them as very cheap militia would be a good opinion. btw: i forgot to upload the german conscript images! can see them on page 2 of this thread.

i dont know much about the french ww1 army so i downloaded 2 whole books with pictures of every unit.
i think that means much, much work for me!

hey i need experts advise about the french army. i downloaded 2 books about the french ww1 army.
which units should i make avaiable for early and which for late period? just give me a list of the units, i dont need information about the uniforms because ive pictures of any french unit in ww1.

Well.. that’s more a game design decision than an historical one. All “types” of units existed right from the start. All that happened was tactical and unit reorganisation (such as adopting platoon tactics in 1915, issuing lmgs, or “grenadier-voltigeur” infantryman training replacing early war riflemen) and those affected all regiment types.

    Spoiler for suggestion

Well for early war I’d go with the stock French metropolitan units:
    Line Infantry
    Territorial infantry (reservists)
    Chasseurs à pieds (light infantry)
    Dragons (lancers)
    Cuirassiers (heavy cavalry)
    Chasseurs à cheval (light dragoons)
    Hussars (light cavalry)

And a different roster in North Africa and the Middle East:
    Zouaves (regulars)
    Tirailleurs (light infantry)
    Goumiers (conscript)
    Spahis (light cavalry)
    Chasseurs d’Afrique (light dragoons)

    Then later game:
    Grenadiers-voltigeurs (regular grenadiers)
    Chasseurs Alpins (elite light infantry)
    Infanterie Coloniale (marines / elite)
Foreign Legion (elite, limited in numbers)

Of course gameplay has to factor in too.

well, made line infantry and chasseurs a pied now. i saw that both of them had mountain batallions. they used a strange hat and i dont know how it looked like exactly. as i want to create mountain troops for chasseurs a cheval and curassiers too i request for some images of this special kind of hat.

PS: thx for unit list, it helped me much, because i didnt know how to place spahis...
foreign legion and colonial infantry shouldnt make problems, because ive already perfectly fitting models.

You mean the «tarte», which is a type of Basque beret.
There really isn’t a standard shape as each chasseur tends to give it the shape he wants.
    Still, here’s a sample:

(already posted in the TGW research thread)

Also there are plenty of pictures of contemporary Chasseurs alpins here:
    http://www.alpins.fr/chasseurs_alpins.html

It’s still worn by modern Chasseurs Alpins in their ceremonial uniform.

By Colonial Infantry I meant the current Infanterie de Marine of course, and not their native tirailleurs auxiliaries.

thx! france is going to get more than a dozen units in early period only, so you will see a few every day. kind of an unit-calendar...

    Excellent job on WWI units

Do you use NTW or ETW as a base ?

You should really reduce the units sizes, when i tried it out using only 4 or 5 units i couldnt even play because it lagged so bad, you should reduce the size to around 200-250 men.

What happened in front of the german units? :S

OMG GIGANTIC IDEA JUST HIT ME!!!

Can you change the technology tree? What i am thinking is, that it would be better to have new units appear both after a certain time AND after researching the needed technology (i do suppose buildings will be at their highest tier, no reason not to be, after all we are talking about a 4 year span). So, no "new infantry doctrine (for example)" tech researched? No new uniforms for you, no sir, you will keep fighting and dying with your red pants because you were to stubborn to just click the button.

Also i favor the idea of old style units being untrainable (replenishable though) after researching said tech.

That's certainly a do-able task. I'd be interested to see if he implements it.
