    Default The Dream Teams

I posted this here because I was interested in knowing about the greatest military teams in history and all the important officers that served under all those iconic and amazing figures.
    For example:
    Hannibal Barca
    Hasdrubal Barca
    Mago Barca
    Maharbal (Cavalry)
    Hasdrubal Gisco
etc... (Add to this please also please include jobs and ranks)

    Alexander the Great

Antipater - General and administrator of the West
Parmenio - General and administrator of the East

    Ptolemy
Seleucus, rather unimportant throughout the campaign, was favored in the Treaty of Triparadisus as he was given Babylonia, a rich, dense satrapy which gave him the edge in the Successor Wars
    Coinos
    Perdiccas
    Peucestas, somatofylax (bodyguard) of Alexander
Craterus, second closest friend of Alexander after Hephestion, infantry commander, leader of a Taxis of the phalanx, given command of large units of infantry later on
Nearchos, the best naval commander of the Macedonian Navy
    Lysimachus, (probably Thessalian)
Eumenes, (Thracian), general secretary of the Macedonian army, did not lead any units but was fairly active during the Successor Wars. Respected by Alexander.
Cassander, son of Antipater, did not participate in the campaign, stayed in Macedonia and accused of trying to gain power of Macedonia together with his father, something which led to him hating Alexander.
Hephestion, led the royal agema (royal hipparchy)
    Antiochus
Cleitus, leader of one hetairoi hipparchy, murdered by Alexander

Will post more tomorrow. I'm sure I forgot some of them.

John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy commanded the Allied forces together in the Habsburg Netherlands during the War of Spanish Succession on several occassions, notably Malapaquet. Two of the all time greats on the same side, it's really a testament to the strength of Louis XIV's power base that the French were able to hold on at this stage of the war.

How bout the Petraeus team from the Iraq Surge? A lot of smart colonels armed with history degrees, not a bad Secretary of Defense either.

I also give props to EXCOMM, they probably saved everybody's ass.

US army? Great at QM stuff.

I think Napoleon and Phillip 2 of Macedon put together the two outstanding staffs in history.

Napoleon had the biggest army in Europe of his day commanded very ably, as well as aides-de-camps who could command anything from brigades up to armies basically hanging around waiting for special missions. They were extremely experienced and won many victories against a huge range of opponents.

Phillips team unified Greece, once again against a range of opposition and were inherited by Alexander 3 who added a brace of cunning plotters and took them to the ends of the earth. Several were smart and able enough to carve up the empire after his death, although the sneaky ones did at least as well as the warlike ones.

Dārayavahuš (a more practical transliteration from Old Persian would be Dārayvauš, with the "v" being almost silent, IMHO) Vozorg and his six co-conspirators.

    John Churchill

    - Commanded Allied forces at the battle of Blenheim in 1704, and inflicted a major defeat (30% casualties) on the French and their Bavarian allies, ending French hopes for a decisive victory in the War of the Spanish succession. Keep in mind the French in Louis XIV's time had been Europe's dominant power for decades.

Prince Eugene of Savoy/Prinz Eugen von Savoyen/Principe Eugenio di Savoia

-Frenchman by birth, Louis XIV declined to offer him a position in the French army, so he entered Austrian Habsburg service.
-Led the Austrians to decisive victories at Buda, Belgrade, and especially Zenta in the effort to drive the Turkish hordes from Europe.
-Joined forces with the Allies in the war of the Spanish Succession since France was threatening his relative Victor Amadeus II's kingdom Savoy. Though greatly outnumbered, he led the Habsburgs to victory at Turin, then joined forces with Marlborough to inflict several major defeats on the French, such as Blenheim, Malapaquet, and Oudenarde. The duo was less successful in the fighting in Spain itself, where pro-French Castile defeated pro-Habsburg Catalonia.
-In 1717 he led the Austrian forces against the Turks again, defeating them at Peterwardein and Belgrade (again!). In the peace treaty that followed the Austrians gained much of Serbia including Belgrade (they would lose it a few decades later).

The US will gladly step up to become the world police when there is oil involved, yet they will resign the second there is a genocide in Africa, a slaughter in an allied nation, or a massacre committed by dictators, all who's nations have nothing to offer, but the gratitude of the people to the international community for reaching out.

He wasn't a horse molester - he won 19 wars in one year. Ok, more like 19 battles against different enemies. His predecessor, however, killed some random cow in Egypt.

Army Group A. 1940. French Border.

Led by Gerd von Runsdedt. BAMF.

Under him Panzer Gruppen Kleist led by Ewald von Kleist. And included Guderian and Rommel.

Took them a few weeks to cut the Anglo-French in half and reach the Channel.

    European Theater US Army, WWII

Dwight D Eisenhower (the diplomatic commander)
Omar Bradley (the behind the scenes guy)
George S. Patton (the pit bull)
Matthew Ridgeway (the "lead from the front" type)
Hap Arnold (the steady commander of the army air force)

The US military had great commanders in the Pacific too, but they were often at odds with each other to say the least.

Oh you mean Darius the Great! The hell does a horse molestor have to do with this? Cambyses II killed cows in Egypt? I thought he killed cats!
