Default [SS 6.4] England AAR: The Tales of a Kingdom **ON HOLD**

(My first AAR, be gentle Be really mean and nasty )
    The Tales of a Kingdom

    |M2TW|SS 6.4|ENGLAND|

I am playing as England Long Campaign with No advice Levels on M/M (I know ), Manage All Cities, Show CPU Moves and No Battle Time Limit on the Steam Version of M2TW/M2TW Kingdoms with No Mods installed
I am now playing as England, Early Era Campaign on S.S 6.4. Normal AI with permanent watchtowers and 'House Rules' options selected. Still on M/M and No Battle Time Limits.

NOTE: Volume 2 can be ready without prior reading of Volume 1. In fact, I would recommend skipping Volume 1 entirely, it isn't very good.

A big thanks to everyone who voted for me in the MAARC XXXV and the MAARC XXXVI, although we haven't won (yet) thanks voting.

I submitted a battle in my AAR to the BAARC III, and, much to my surprise, I came 2nd - thank-you to anyone who helped me achieve that.

And finally, A massive thank-you to Schrödinger for his exceedingly kind review of my AAR in The Critics Quill Issue 33. The review can be found here.

Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 1

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I am William Smith, advisor to our most glorious king. William the Conquerer, so called for a very good reason. From a small domain in Normandy, William has most nobly, and with the blessing of the Pope, expanded his Kingdom to include the South of England. I am here to record the "goings on" of the Kingdom and show, hopefully, English courage will prevail...

As you can see the Kingdom holds 3 major towns and castles. Nottingham, Caen and our most glorious capital London. We share borders with France to the south and are surrounded by traitorous rebels everywhere else. This, my King assures me, will make for rapid expansion.

The most notable persons of our Kingdom include:

Prince Rufus, heir to the Kingdom, and is a promising commander with natural ability and a grasp of command structure. He is currently guarding our north-most border with levied Peasant Archers and Spear Militia.

Cecilia, only daughter of the King, and although she is a natural negotiator her diplomatic ability and charm is only enough to.. how do I say, win over the more simpler of men.

Aston, a respect Cardinal in the College and one of the Bishop Preferati. He has a strong faith and it is rumored god speaks to him. Another trusted advisor to the King, and due to the his position in the College of Cardinals, I'm sure the King wants to keep him so.

Robert, second son of the King, and current governor of Caen and commander of all our forces in France. Accompanied by Peasant Archers and Spear Militia, he is an aspiring commander who is no doubt wanting to be compared with his farther and brother.

Laurence Bidell. he is the foreign diplomat for the King and has told me he plans to send him to the French Court and establish friendly relations, for now...

To start off the year the King's spy, Richard,

is ordered to infiltrate the Rebel Village of York to the north, but fails

and is killed during his first mission. Now, with no knew knowledge of York's defences, the King orders Prince Rufus to reinforce his army
    with troops from Nottingham

and with the reinforcements the Prince, with an army of 180 Peasant Archers and 300 Spear Militia, is tasked with taking York.

Default Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 1 cont.

Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 1 cont.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The King, later that year, told the council his plans to expand quickly and take the Rebel settlement of Rennes to the south.

The Council agree but the Cardinal Aston advises the King to raise the taxes so the Kingdom will be able to afford the burden of war, the King accepts the proposal and the so the taxes of London are raised to a very high rate. The Princess Cecilia makes her way to the port south of London to await passage to France, and Aston makes his way to London where the King needs his advice and hopes his presence will also help convert more people to the Roman Catholic faith, which will also please the Pope and hopefully guarantee his continued support.

In London the King disbands levied Peasants as their service if fulfilled and sends some Spear Militia to reinforce Nottingham.

He also issues the recruitment of some more Town Militia to help keep the city in order, and the construction of some mines in the south to boost income. Knowing, also, of the future conflict in the North he issued the construction of basic infrastructure in Nottingham.

Robert also issues the construction of infrastructure in Caen, before going off to take command of the army under Captain Robin.

In a private letter to me he wrote how he wished to please his farther and gain some experience, and was going to do so by marching towards Rennes,

and recruit some local mercenaries to help him achieve this.

Back in Caen Robert had left orders for the recruitment of some Knights to reinforce the Castle.
The King also sent a Merchant by the name of Samuel Blacke to travel to Bruges and start trading in textiles, generating more income for the Kingdom.

The King showed me a short note received from Laurence letting the King know if his endeavors with the French.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Your Almighty Majesty,
I have succeeded in traveling to Angers and securing a Trade Agreement, and more importantly, an Alliance with the Kingdom of France. I hope this please you and allows you to focus on more important matters in the North.
    Yours sincerely,
    Laurence Bidell

And soon enough the King gets a formal notice stating the alliance between our Kingdoms.

Towards the end the season Admiral Geiles is instructed to rendezvous with Admiral Nigel,

and make for port north of Caen to avoid the oncoming Winter.

That ends the Summer Season and who knows what Winter will bring...

Default Re: [M2TW Kingdom SV] England ARR: Founding of a Kingdom

There we go, thats my first turn of my English AAR. I know not a lot happens but I hope it introduces the characters and "sets the scene".

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, e.g To many pictures/not enough pictures/Not enough writing/Characters not developed etc.

I apologies for the bad cropping of the Pics, it's my first time and I am still getting use to it. Although it is only the first section there are a few people I would like to thank greatly:
la coupe est pleine for his amazing AAR An Eastern Jewel in a Western World!!! Chronicles of a French Miserable, which gave the want to make my own
numio for his amazing, although incomplete, AAR The Chronicles of the Principality of Antioch, which also gave me inspiration for my own, I would recommend both of them for a great read
LongWind, Mhaedros, StealthFox and Sitalkes for their help on, what I thought was a complex process, taking screenshots and making it easy for me to understand. Without them I would have not been able to do this. :

    Bonjour,

To begin with, nice to see that you started a new AAR. I hope you will enjoy to write as much as most of the people here.
    It is very pleasant.

Then, thank you very much for your words. It shows us that our writing has some "power", and is able to moticate new writers.

About your story, I'm pleased to see an English AAR, as they are our (french people) best (and worst ) enemies...
Introductions are often the same. You have to introduce your characters. Don't worry with this.
I would say that your story telling is descriptive. It is ok for the moment, but if I can offer you an advice, just try in the future to add feelings, make your characters real humans, and the most important, try to surprise the readers.

I know it is not easy at the beginning, but you will quickly succeed with some training. Of course.

About the pictures, I can't see them for the moment. Make sure to upload them in a "picture storing website" like Photobucket. Then, you will find a button in the writing editing tools, offering you the possibility to display your picture, using the URL of your image.

Good luck, and let's pray that Saint George will protect you and your Kingdom.
    Against the French. Eh eh...

Thanks for the help, I'll try and get all that sorted in the next installment. About the pictures, I just went on "Manage Attachemnts" uploaded the screenshots I had saved (JPEG) and then clicked "upload" Then I copied the screenshots URL onto the post and put after it, when I previewed post they seemed to be there hmm......
I did however remove the attachment so I could fit more screenshots on, but when I previewed it again, they still showed? I'll try and get the fixed, and apologieses for the somewhat plain first installment..... (this, I think, is the problem)

EDIT: Re-tried with the screenshots, hopefully you will be able to see them now

    It can only get better......

Default Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 2

Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 2

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
To start off Winter the Council of Nobles, humbly, suggested the King to take the settlement of York for the glory of our nation.

I was there at the meeting and was surprised, shocked almost, at the King's response, "I AM THE KING, I TELL YOU WHAT TO DO, NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND," he roared back at them, truly he is one to fear.

Later that same day I was in my office looking through the Royal Documents and found, unfortunately, that our Kingdom was a making a loss, a big loss. I told myself that as long as the coffers were full, which they still were, I wouldn't need to trouble the King with such insignificant matters. Thankfully, that also meant I wouldn't need to feel his terrible wrath., instead I would just have to advise him to take care on his personal expenses. One thing I will tell him, to try and lighten his mood, is that both the Caen and Nottingham regions now have basic roads in-place and that the Town Militia had been recruited in London, the people of that city kindly paying for there upkeep. One less burden on the Kingdoms fragile economy.

We also heard news from Nottingham that the Spear Militia sent up from London had arrived to garrison the castle, and that already the region was much happier having troops to protect it. None sooner had the Kings mood lightened when he found out Admiral Nigel was still docket at Caen and had not arrived at the docks near London to transport his daughter to the mainland. When the King demanded to know the delay Admiral Nigel meekly responded saying the the winter winds were to strong and rest assured he would leave port as soon as summer arrived. This made the King even more angry and he stormed around the palace cursing the Admiral and sea-fearers in general. I managed to calm him down and show him a letter I had just received from the Prince.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Dear Farther,
I carried on marching to York as you requested and finding it had no defences, rather than maintain a costly siege, I decided to assault the town immediately upon my arrival. I hope this is what you would have wanted and below I have disclosed a report on the battle.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I decided to take the element of surprise and not wait and although my men were tired from the march the promise of spoils gave them new hope and energy. Oh how easily a mindless peasant can be fooled. Upon deploying my forces before the battle I placed my spearmen in-front of the archers, this would offer them protection whilst they would lay down covering fire during the assault. I also told them to light their arrows, hoping to scare the rebels before any fighting had begun. I placed my-self behind the archers ready to deal with any threat to our flank.

I ordered the advance and our troops marched bravely to the outskirts of the town, where then I ordered them to halt and moved the archers forward to rain fire down upon them. They fired volley after volley of fire arrive upon the enemy.

As soon as my archers opened fire they sent their body of infantry down a main road to deal with them. I had two options: order my archers to pull back behind the spears; or make use of the natural bottleneck and send 75 spearmen to block of the road whistle my archers continued to rain down hell. I chose the latter,

and seeing they were holding there own I rode around the side of the town to try and flank them and charge down the remaining troops left in the centre of the town.

Thankfully some cool-head managed to stop my archers from firing as well, I certainly didn't fancy being shot by one of our own men. Once the battle is over seek him out at the end of the battle and thank him. Once me and my bodyguard got amongst their peasant rebel didn't stand a chance, and after one of my bodyguard shouted he had slain their commander the last remains of their morale broke.

Suddenly down one of the roads came the remains of their body of infantry that had attacked our battle line, feeling for their lives, closely pursued by our spearmen. WHoever is giving these orders will have my thanks, they show an apt for command.

With the arrival of my men they didn't stand a chance....

The message trailed off, "Where is the rest of it?" demanded the King, obviously wanting to hear of his son's exploits, I don't know, I've only just seen it I thought about shouting back, but managing to constrain my-self I replied "I don't know your majesty." Just at that moment a clerk burst in with another letter, seemingly also from the Prince, "This has just arrived, your majesty," he murmured, faltering, under the King's cold stare. "Give it hear," I snapped, more sharply than I had meant to. I opened it and read it out loud.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Dear Your Almighty Majesty,
I regret to inform you that at the pinnacle moment of the battle, when the rebels were in full retreat, your most noble prince feel, being killed by a simple pitchfork,

Seeing his death the rebels gained hope and leapt upon him like a hound of worthless dogs, no doubt wanting revenge for the hundreds he had most valiantly slain. I thought, seeing the Prince's deat the men would faulter, but instead they gained the fury of god and slaughtered the rebels with no mercy, as was right. The Prince's own bodyguard, now only five men strong, must have slew at least half of them, they were like men possessed. I was honored to have fought beside them. Safe to say in the end the rebels were utterly crushed, none of them survived whistle we only lost 62, but sometimes the greatest victory costs the highest price.

In his honor we exterminated the remains of the rebel town for being so cowardly.

I trust you received the Prince's report, found on one of his bodyguards, it must have been written during the battle. The army awaits your command,

    Yours faithfully....

Thats the second installment. What do you think?
Sorry for the delay, but I think have got the screenshot problem sorted
Again any feedback welcome, and apologies for the confusion of the tense in Prince Rufus' letter, as I was writing it as it happened I wasn't expecting the death () and I had to go back and try and change the tense, also apologies for the bad grammar, particularly "their" or "there" but one could say that in the Middle Ages grammar wasn't their(?) strong point so I am being realistic

    Next installment coming soon.....

Default Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 3

Sorry for not updating for a while, but with Christmas around the corner I find myself busier than ever - the holiday will mean more updates though - and it doesn't help that I have discovered the Kingdoms Launcher App for my Steam Version of the game, which means I can try out as many mods as possible; and trust me I have But here is the next installment

    ******************************************************************************************************************************************

Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 3

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The letter dropped from my hand. I was shocked that the Prince had fallen in such a small conflict, it just goes to show a Peasant can kill someone as easily as a Knight. "My Kin-"
"GET OUT!" He roared at me, causing me to jump, "EVERYONE OUT NOW!" He shouted, his voice cracking, trying to hold back the tears. "My liege," I bowed, retreating out of the throne room.

"Send a message to Prince Robert" I said to a clerk who had followed me out of the throne room, "tell him of his brother's death."
"Yes Sir," he said, walking off in the opposite direction. My heart heavy, I began to walk to my office, weaving past the servants and other guests at the Palace. Arriving, I sat down with a sigh, knowing the King wasn't in a fit state to rule, and sent a message to Nottingham telling them to proceed with the construction of more permanent Garrison Quarters.

Days turned into weeks, the King not coming out of his chamber once having meals bought to his chamber instead. I know his is grieving, but surely he needs to start to carry on with the ruling of the Kingdom. I was just about to start on the finances of the Kingdom (oh the joyous days of the King's advisor) when a clerk entered, handing me a note which was addressed to the King.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Dear your Almighty Majesty,
Not hearing any response to your letter or your further plans I halted the advance at York and went about rearming and reforming the remaining army, and with the soldiers having nothing to do I ordered the construction of a Land Clearance

to hopefully raise the value of this small settlement, and to more importantly, keep the soldiers occupied. Nothings more dangerous then a soldier who starts to think. I await further instructions.
    Your most humble servant,
Captain Edward, current commander of our Northern Forces.

"Captain Edward" I mused, he must have been the one Prince Rufus mentioned, and the way he is styling himself, one with high ambitions too. One to watch, nevertheless I sent him a short reply and decided to leave him in command.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Captain Edward,
As you can understand the King is in a period of grief and is unable to deal with matters at the moment. You have done the right thing and further instructions will follow.
William Smith, advisor to the King.

I smiled as I wrote advisor to the King, if he wanted to play that game then so will I. Short, but it will do. I put the reply down and picked up the reports from a territories in France. All seemed to be doing fine, the road had been built and a Bowyer was being constructed.

I filed though the remaining reports until I came across one from Prince Robert....

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Dear Farther,
I am truly sorry to hear about the death of your son and my brother. He was a great person and would have been a great king, I will try to make you proud like him. But enough of tidings of grief, I have wrote to tell you that our forces have besieged the rebel town of Rennes, and will be ready to assault next season.

I will write again once we have seized the town.
    God bless,
    Robert

I read it again. War, war, and more war, that's all it's about even after the death of the Prince, I prayed that Robert would come back alive. I put the message aside to be given to the King.
The rest of the season was quite uneventful. The King still hardly leaving his chambers, and me just getting the normal letters that an advisor would receive. Towards the end of the season I did hear from Laurence Bidell, he said he was making his way south towards the Papal States to get a meeting with the Pope, and hopefully get some Trade Agreements from the rich Italian Merchant States.

And so Winter tuned to Summer, and who knows what that will bring......

I did think of of doing my ARR as England on DLV, but decided I didn't have enough experience with the mod for a 1st AAR, but maybe in the future... Good luck with your England game

Good start, and let me second la coupe's advice: some plot in the story can be useful when somebody writes about a faction that is relatively well-known. I would also suggest to deselect the units before you take a picture on the battlefield. The green arrows kinda out of place.
    But keep it up.

Cheers for the advice Radzeer, for the next update I'll try not to select the units, and I'll try to add a bit of a plot line

By the way your The Collected Wisdom of AAR Writing is brilliant

Default Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 4

Volume 1: The Early Days - Chronicles of William Smith Chapter 4

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
At the start of the season I received another letter from Captain Edward, telling me that the Scots, hearing of Prince Rufus' presence, sent a diplomat, Patrick MacDougall - who I've had dealings with in the past, to propose the right to trade with our Kingdom, and to try and make the deal sweater they also offered to give us map infomation.

Edward wrote that he had informed them of the Princes death, and that they offered their condolences. He said he accepted there offer - a mere peasant making diplomatic decisions! The cheek. He justified his acceptance of the offer by saying he found, in Prince Rufus' baggage, future plans for an invasion and thought that the Scot's map information would be useful, also (according to Sir Captain Edward) 'You can't have too many trade agreements.' I need to watch him; making agreements without the Kings consent, and going through a royals baggage. Defiantly one to watch. Again, the Council requested the King should send a diplomat to the Holy Roman Empire,

and as I was sitting in for a still grieving King, I told them that Laurence was already on his way south to establish said relations. This gained a few murmurs, one out-spoken Noble even went as far as shouting out me saying "What right do you have to issue such orders!" This outburst received a chorus of agreements. The nerve. I replied, as calmly as I could, "That order was given by the King, and unless you want to go and take up the matter personally I humbly suggest that you shut it." And shut it they did. I ended the meeting there and then and stormed off back to my office. Another fresh pile of reports greeted me when I arrived, there seems to be a constant stream of reports flowing through my office. "Is there no end to this!" I cursed up to the sky, my plea was met by silence. "Obviously not," I muttered under my breath. Carelessly flicking through them I found out that in London Region the mines had finished being constructed,

and that still the Kingdom was making a loss.

Hopefully the new mines will help sort that out. It was then that I saw yet another report from Prince Robert

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Dear Farther,
With the arrival of Summer, and the men getting restless I ordered the assault to begin. As the siege engines were complete the walls weren't a problem. Below is a report of the battle.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I deployed my men with the intention if having one force assault the gate and another a section of wall.

When my men were ready I signaled the advance and the two forces marched up together. The first force reached the wall and began to use the battering ram whistle coming under enemy fire.

At the gate the second force had just arrived but before they could get one swing of the ram the enemy sallied forth to counter the threat.

The first force had broken through the wall,

and were greeted by a charge from the enemy.

Meanwhile, the archers had arrived to support the attack on the gate,

and began to fire volley after volley of flaming arrows into the mass of rebels, the arrows lit up the sky!. Back over at the breach in the wall the men were steadily forcing the enemy back, and now had a foothold in the town.
Over at the gate I heard a cry of terror fill the enemy and saw that one of our men had slain the rebel general.

It was time to press home the advantage, I ordered my bodyguard to charge down the enemy at the gates,

and with that the remaining enemy forces fled down the street.

I ordered my men to continue the charge before I saw the line of enemy crossbowmen waiting for us,

but it was too late to do anything except charge threw them - and so wed did, cutting our way through the enemy until we reached the centre of the town, where they were making a final stand. I didn't hesitate and charge the rest of them. The fighting was fierce,

but our victory was sealed with the arrival of of the first force,

which I was latter told had fought threw the back streets cleansing them of the enemy, and our with our combined forces the rebels didn't stand a chance; and before you could shout "Victory is ours!"....... it was.

Once the victory was complete I occupied the town with our men,

and began repairing the town's defences and the construction of roads so reinforcements can quickly arrive from Caen.

    I await your instructions,
    Robert

I sighed with the relief, glad to know Robert remained unharmed, he'll go far I remember thinking. I stood up to go and give the report to the King, and thats when I heard it, the beating of hooves, the ring of swords. I looked out of my window and saw...

There we go - my third update I hope you enjoy it and as always feedback is welcomed and greatly appreciated. I hope the tense is better for this battle then Rufus' one, it was easier because Robert didn't die (thankfully ) also I apologise for the different effects on the pictures (if you can notice them) I tried out a few effects on Photobucket to see which ones I liked but forgot to change the others back

@Radzeer When I was cropping the pictures afterwards I saw that during the battle I had sometimes, whistle taking the screenshots, left the unit selected. I started kicking myself, and as the battle had finished couldn't retake them So I apologise for that and just to let you know I did take your advice, I just forgot (must have got caught up in the heat of the moment )

@Everyone else Thanks for the support, it really helped me face my pain-in-the-arse computer

Hopefully the next chapter will be updated soon

What I do is save replay after each battle and take screenshots like that. It helps you focus on the battle and also to remove gameplay elements like the selection circles. Just a thought.
