    Default [NTW] British Campaign

    Introduction

I really don't like the game objectives for the British Campaign in NTW. Britain's main interests during this period was maintaining her trading rights and support the mainland members of the Coalition, in the hope of defeating Napoleon's France. To that end I have a number of initial objectives that will be the main goals for the start of the campaign. The British government will review them as and when.

    Objectives 1805

    1. Secure all North Atlantic sea trade
    2. Destroy then limit the French Navy and her allies
    3. The Army is to be on a ready footing to support allies on the Mainland
    4. Build up and improve the garrison of Gibraltar

    Turn Report Early January 1805

    NAVAL REPORT

Building up and focusing on the Royal Navy is going to be Britain's main focus if I'm to secure trading rights across the North Atlantic to that end I'm going to build a squadron of Fifth Rate ships in Portsmouth, and upgrading the city of Liverpool by developing the harbor to a Commercial Port.

Destroying the French Navy is going to be the biggest challenge. The first steps to accomplish this is will be to start a blockading campaign against French ports. Admiral Cornwalis will blockade the French port of Brest. Admiral Elphinstone will blockade the Dutch port of Rotterdam.

Admiral Cornwalis begins blockade of Brest

Admiral Elphinstone begins the blockade of Rotterdam

Admiral Nelson as repositioned his fleet just of the coast of Northern Spain, this is to keep The French fleet in check. I don't want to engage with the French fleet yet as I feel Nelson requires reinforcements.

A Merchantmen is to be built at Chatham docks this will be sent to North America to increase trading opportunities when built.

    ARMY REPORT

The Army isn't strong enough to deploy on campaign yet and will garrison in London until funds become available to increase it's number and strength.

A Regiment of Foot will be raised to support Gibraltar. Once the French Navy as been dispatched I intend for Gibraltar to be a Naval and trading platform in the Southern Mediterranean

    RESEARCH REPORT

To assist with the financial pressures of increasing the Navy, research into Bottling and Canning is underway at Oxford this will give a -5% upkeep costs for all naval units.

    HOME REPORT

Clearance have commenced in Yorkshire to increase the profitability of the region.

    DIPLOMACY REPORT

The Prussians have offered a trading agreement, the British Government accepts

The Ottoman's have attacked an ally. Due to our diplomatic relations with Austria the British Government declare war on the Ottoman Empire

In other news Napoleon has created the Confederation of the Rhine, meaning more nations to fight and more honour to gain.

    NAVAL REPORT

    The French navy commanded by Villeneuvre has moved east of Gibraltar;

I was hoping to try and keep Nelson's fleet in pursuing distance of the French; but for this unexpected turn up

Nelson will engage the Dutch fleet and remove this threat to British shipping. Nelson may lose contact with Villeneurve but if I tried to stay in contact with him Nelson could face being trapped between the two fleets, or risk having an enemy fleet moving into the English Channel.

The Dutch fleet turns out to be a trading convoy with a couple of escorts, not a major threat to Nelson or the Royal Navy. Nelson already committed to battle engaged the fleet and destroyed it, at least it will limit the enemies economy. The outcome though is that Nelson will have to return to Portsmouth for repairs and certainly lose contact with Villeneurve.

The French move troops into Brest ending the Cornwallis' blockade on the port . Cornwallis will be order to move out into the Atlantic to act as an early warning system if any enemy fleets approach the British Isles.

Cornwallis moves into the Atlantic, note Nelson returning to Portsmouth, and French troops occupying Brest.

Elphinstone's blockade ends as well so begins raiding Dutch trading routes

    CONCLUSION

Nothing further to report, the Treasury needs to be improved before any further investments can be made.

Nelson continues his return back to Portsmouth and Elphinstone continues raiding Dutch trading lanes.

    ARMY REPORT

The 9th Regiment of Foot as been raised in Gibraltar

    HOME REPORT

Clearances begin in Ireland which will give an added bonus to the economy

    CONCLUSION

I hope that Villeneuvre doesn't push on towards Britain due to the fact that Nelson's Fleet is in no condition to put up a fight. I will at least have a few turns before he arrives, if he arrives.

    NAVAL REPORT

The French Admiral Villineurve continues to move up north up the Iberian Peninsular

Also another French Navy as been spotted near the straits of Gibraltar

Nelson's fleet makes it safely back to port and repairs begin

The Merchantmen Insurgent as been built and will be sent to Baltimore to get a foothold on the Tobacco trade

Admiral Cornwallis will maintain his Fleet's presence in the Atlantic but out of the range of the French fleet. Admiral Elphinstone continues to raid Dutch trading.

    Conclusion

Due to the fact the repairs have cost so much nothing else can be improved. I'm hoping that the repairs don't take to long to accomplish.

Nelson's Fleet is now fully repaired and will set sail in late March once the 5 Rate ship is built.

    HOME REPORT

Clearances have been completed in Yorkshire.

    Conclusion

A quiet turn overall. I think that Villenuerve's fleet as to go we'll see what happens when Nelson redeploys back onto the waves

Admiral Villeneuvre has moved back to the Iberian Peninsular maybe he fears the Royal Navy more then the Royal Navy fears the French

    Conclusion

I think I will pursue Villeneurve and see what is mettle is like in battle. Again my economy isn't has strong as I want it to be and will try and enter into some trade agreements, in other news my Merchantmen Insurgent is approaching Baltimore and I will have the income coming in from that.

Due to the fact that the Dutch Navy has raided Chatham and torched it's warehouses supplies from trade has been reduced to only allowing imports and exports to and from Austria. To exasperate the situation the French Navy has started to attack British shipping lanes in the Mediterranean, reducing trade to Austria.

This has severely damaged the British economy and will send it into the red by the end of the month

Critical to the continuing involvement of Britain is the repairing of Chatham docks. Also The British Government has to look into opening another dock to keep the economic lifeline open.

    HMS Unicorn - Savannah, GA

    ----------------------------------------------

    Naval Taskings

Two immediate challenges face the Royal Navy.

One is the threat to Chatham docks, as this is the only "trade port" on Britain's mainland this will need to be defended and any future planned attacks by enemy fleets can be swiftly dealt with. Admiral Elphinstone will be in charge of this task, this will come into the remit of the English Channel Defense plan. This plan covers a number of aspects; deter enemy fleets from entering (what is considered) British waters from Chatham docks to the Bristol channel, if encroachment occurs deal assess the situation and if viable use lethal forces to deal with trespassing. Currently resources at his disposal are limited but the Government hope to find the necessary equipment to complete this task soon.

The second treat is the belligerency of French Naval units operating around the seas off the Iberian peninsular. Horatio Nelson is tasked with dealing with this menace and cause sufficient damage to the French Fleet that it is either destroyed or severely crippled.

Ok this as helped me catch up with the state of play and re-reading my previous posts. Obviously my economy tanking will be the my main concern. I hope the measures I have put in place help overcome them.

My writing style has changed slightly as I think on a second read of my previous posts it seems a little drab. I want Britain to have a little bit more character. I want to leave the "I did this then I did that" to a more "report" style. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Well I hope you enjoy and game on!

PS I don't know why i have so many "spoiler" sections in this turn update, I tried to edit the additional tags but it reverted back
