Official Announcement - Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai

Hi all,

We’re delighted to announce a huge new standalone expansion for Total War: Shogun 2. Fall of the Samurai is a massive new piece of content and will be hitting shores March 2012.

Fall of the Samurai brings to life the conflict between the Imperial throne and the last Shogunate in 19th century Japan. It’s set 400 years after the events of the original game, featuring a dramatic clash of traditional Samurai culture with the explosive power of modern weaponry.

This is a huge title for us in itself, and we’ve been putting a lot of time into the goal of making this the best expansion ever for a Total War title.

New on the scene will be America, Britain and France, whose arrival incites a ferocious civil war to decide the fate of the nation. You’ll be able to play one of six new playable clans, supporting either the Imperial throne or the last Shogunate.

It looks like you don't/can't play as the foreigners. Instead it's a RotS style approach, six clans but with two allegiances.

Play as a clan supporting the Imperial throne, or the last Shogunate:

Shogunate clans: Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai

Imperial clans: Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa

Edit: you can recruit them though!

You’ll also be able to get your hands on three new agent types: the Foreign Veteran, the Ishin Shishi and the Shinsengumi.

Ishin Shishi ->

Shishi (志士; sometimes known as 維新志士 Ishin-shishi) was a term used to describe Japanese political activists of the late Edo period. The term shishi literally translates as "men of high purpose."[1] While it is usually applied to the anti-shogunate, pro-sonnō jōi (尊王攘夷; "Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarian[s]") samurai primarily from the southwestern clans of Satsuma, Chōshū, and Tosa, the term shishi is also used by some with reference to supporters of the shogunate who held similar sonnō jōi views.

There were many different varieties of shishi. Some, such as the assassins Kawakami Gensai, Nakamura Hanjiro, Okada Izo, and Tanaka Shinbei, opted for a more violent approach in asserting their views. Kawakami Gensai, in particular, is recalled as the assassin of Sakuma Shozan, a renowned pro-Western thinker of the time.[2] Other more radical shishi, such as Miyabe Teizō, plotted large-scale attacks with little regard for public safety. Miyabe himself was one of the ringleaders of the plot, foiled by the Shinsengumi at the Ikedaya Incident, to burn Kyoto at the height of the Gion Festival.[3]

Shinsegumi ->

The Shinsengumi members were originally also known as the Miburō (壬生浪?), meaning "ronin of Mibu", Mibu being the suburb of central Kyoto where they were stationed. However, the reputation of the Shinsengumi became tarnished quite early on, and their nickname soon changed to "Wolves of Mibu" (壬生狼 Miburō?). Shinsengumi could be translated as "Newly Selected Corps" (Shinsen means "new chosen (ones)", while "gumi" translates as "group", "team", or "squad".)

Edit: these agents don't replace Ninja/Geisha. Only Metsuke and Monks, I imagine.

here will be whole new land and sea unit interactions, including the ability to call in offshore artillery support barrages. Coastal gun emplacements can conversely target enemy ships, bringing a new synergy to land and sea elements of gameplay. Players can even call in campaign map bombardments – bombarding armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas of the campaign map itself. It’s time to rethink your strategy…

I will probably get this, not played S2TW in awhile - this could get another 40 or 50 hours out of me!

Are you making it standalone so you can sell it for near full price as with Napoleon?

The new island of Ezo extends the SHOGUN 2 campaign map northwards.

Some shogunate forces escaped to Hokkaidō, where they attempted to set up a breakaway Republic of Ezo - however, forces loyal to the Emperor ended this attempt in May 1869 with the Battle of Hakodate in Hokkaidō. The defeat of the armies of the former shogun (led by Enomoto Takeaki and Hijikata Toshizō) marked the final end of the Tokugawa Shogunate; with the Emperor's power fully restored.

Bug fixes and a couple of features will be applied to Shogun 2. People who own FotS will be able to play people who own Shogun 2 in mp.

It has been made standalone so people do not have to own both products to play it.

We will talk about price at a later date, but rest assured it is not a full priced product.
