    Default Skyrim .ini and advanced settings/solutions to problems

    Updated 12/7/11
    I thought it might be a good idea to post in a single source tweaks, problems/troubleshooting, and ini settings for users.

    I'll post some I found in the general thread to get started:

    12/7/11
    This is a 5 start guide for the ini. Thanks Trajan.

    This guide Trajan links us to makes obsolete much of this post, but I'm going to leave it intact anyway.

    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Just in case anyone playing the game hasn't figured out yet, you can hotkey items/spells in Skyrim by:

    1) Favorite an Item/spell;

    2) Open up the faovrite menu;

    3) Highlight item/spell you want hotkeyed;

    4) Press a number.
    1.Put what ever spells/items you want into favorites.
    2. Open the favorites menu and highlight an item/spell Don't click on it.
    3. Press 1,2,3 . . . to bind the spell/item to that key
    To help reduce mouse lag/turn off Vsynch:
    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Add iPresentInterval=0 to the bottom of the [Display] section of the Skyrim.ini file in the \Users\[Username]\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim directory.
    Another mouse lag tweak in skyrim.ini, not skyrimprefs.ini

    To change timescale (make game minutes longer/shorter relative to real time) courtesy of YD23
    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    "set timescale to X" Default is 30 minutes, this means, one minute in real life is equal to 30 minutes in game time. I set mine to "set timescale to 15", and now I can get shite done and I still have pretty much all day. I guess this is more of a personal taste, but I like to have a longer day.
    P.S. Probably shouldn't set it to 1, the game takes up enough real life time as is

    EDIT: Ned to only enter once in console, no need for .ini editing. This also saves your console command upon any saves. You can still change the number if you decide the previous one isn't good, or want to reverse back. To check if it works, type in "show timescale"

    here's a setting that will likely make the biggest visual difference in exteriors (specifically: the wilderness and not within towns that require a load screen) but will equally be one of the biggest performance hits on your system.
    For information refer to #42 . Thanks Snuggans.

    Archery Tweak!
    Courtesy of Vornox of http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=758
    Is the auto-aim "feature" and the limited range taking away from you enjoying the game? Then simply open and edit the skyrim.ini under documents/my games/skyrim with notepad
    and adjust the following settings:

    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    [Combat]
    f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
    f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7

    This setting will force the arrow to start from the middle
    of the cross hair, then drop down from gravity.

    The 0 setting starts the arrow below the cross hair.

    [Actor]
    fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=14000.0000

    This setting increases the range at which you will be able hit.

    PS: I have no idea, if this tweak has any other side effects,
    but so far i did not notice anything.

    "Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

    Nice mate, the N° 2 helpme. Do you know how to set textures in ultra from ini files?

    Nevermind, things can only be hotkeyed from the menu opened by pressing q, not in any of the menus accessible via tab button.

    Thanks for the volume thing. I still have lag without the Vsync, I'll try to leave it on.

    YD23, what does LOD mean?

    YD23, what does LOD mean?
    LoD is low object detail or load on demand. Low Object Detail basically replaces far away models and textures with lower detail ones, and then the closer you get to them, the more detailed they become.

    Load on demand is when you load a scene, it only loads what's in your line of sight, and then as you move around, it loads the rest.

    Some copypasta about the .ini

    iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3
    It improves the sharpness of the shadows and has a least effect on the performance so you may not see any FPS loss even when you have set it to high. It is recommended that you change this value to 1 but if the shadows are too sharp, you can set it to 2.

    fTreesMidLODSwitchDist=0.0000
    It improves tree LOD distance. You can change it to 10000000.0000 if you want to improve the LOD distance or keep it as it is.

    fShadowLODStartFade=200.0000
    It improves LOD distance of shadows. You can change it to ’1000.0000′.

    iShadowFilter=3
    It improves shadow filtering. You can set it between 1 and 4 (Low, Medium, High, Ultra). You can set it to 4 to improve shadow filtering or lower the quality of shadow of filtering if you want to improve performance.

    bTransparencyMultisampling=0
    Change it to 1 to enable Transparency MS.

    iWaterMultiSamples=0
    It improves Water AA sampling. You can change it from 1 to 4 (Low, Medium, High, Ultra). Change it either to improve the eye candy or to improve the performance or find a good balance between two.

    bTreesReceiveShadows=0
    It improves the tree shadows – You can change it to 1 to enable shadows on trees or keep the shadows disabled if you are looking to squeeze performance out of your machine.

    bDrawLandShadows=0
    It enables land shadows – You can change it to 1 to enable land shadows. Again, shadows eat a lot of system resources and video card memory, keep it disabled if you are looking to squeeze performance.

    fGrassMinStartFadeDistance=0.0000
    It improves grass distance. Greatly effects performance. I have tested it up to ’400.0000′ – you can tweak it this variable either for graphics or performance.

    iWaterReflectHeight=512 / iWaterReflectWidth=512
    It improves Water Reflection Resolution, which obviously will use your system resources. You can either keep it as it is, if you want to improve the performance or even lower it. Or change both to 1024 for eye candy.

    bMouseAcceleration=1
    If you want to disable mouse acceleration, you can change it to 0. You will need to increase the mouse sensitivity in-game when you disable the mouse acceleration.

    uiMaxSkinnedTreesToRender=20
    If you are experiencing low textures and other textures related graphics issues, you can tweak this variable to improve texture and skin rendering. You can set this value to 40 to start with. Or keep it as it is, if you are looking to squeeze performance.
    Additionally, you can add following ini tweaks at the end of the your SkyrimPrefs.ini file:
    bUseWaterReflectionBlur=1
    bReflectExplosions=1
    iWaterBlurAmount=4
    bAutoWaterSilhouetteReflections=0
    bForceHighDetailReflections=1
    The above five ini tweaks improve water rendering – Again, you can keep either lower the value or set them as it is, to make water look gorgeous.
    fBlockLoadDistanceLow=50000.0000
    fBlockLoadDistance=125000.0000
    fHighBlockLoadDistanceLow=20000.0000

    If you want to improve mesh on long distance in Skyrim, add the above three ini tweaks at the end of the configuration file.

    DO NOT mess with FOV thingy people (when setting in console "fov 100" etc). I mean you can but here are some drawbacks:
    It s up the look of things. Your sword might start looking like a dagger; creates other glitches
    It makes things seem very large, as in the wold is huge. However, if you see a bear and your fov is set to say, 100, the bear seems far away. Right??? WRONG. He is probably very close to you and will attempt to claw you to death.
    It doesn't save upon your saves, which means you have to type that command it every time you load a game.
    It's just not worth it in my opinion.

    Also, one very useful command I found. If you hate how fast the time flows, there is a solution!

    Freaking sweet! Is that ~console~ only or does it go in the ini?

    Sorry, forgot to mention, you set it once in console and it actually saves!! This means you only need to enter the command once. You can still change it, do not worry. My first was set to 1 to 10 minutes, now it's at 15 minutes in-game time.
    Also, to check if it worked, type in
    "show timescale" I believe, and it should show what it's currently saved to.

    EDIT: Also, xcorps, perhaps you should enter all the commands people have listed in your first post for easy access and convenience?

    Does it have any negative affects on quests or NPC's? I did it for Oblivion back in the day but I think it messed with NPC timing.

    Thank you thank you thank you!! It was so infuriating to have to keep going back to the menu/quick menu to switch weapons and such! Now I wonder if you can bind whole sets of armor...hmmm

    Alright, tested out the ULTRA ini listed here. I am running on a Phenom x4 965 @ 3.4, 8 GB DDR3, and a Geforce 560. It was a bit framey with what we have here, but I then turned down AA a bit and turned the draw distances to around 6000 (rather than 999999 they have) and it was very smooth. Was awesome to see a dragon almost all the way across the map, but the stuttering was driving me nuts. Others with more powerful systems shouldn't have troubles running it.
