Default saving a gimp file (regarding the layers)

is there any way to save my file WITHOUT having to merge all my layers? i kind of need to play with multiple layers to produce some stuff and i cant do this without flattening/exporting/merging the existing layers.

in short is there a way to save my GIMP file without losing all my layers and keep them as seperate layers when i open up the image again?

The XCF extension in GIMP is actually named 'GIMP Project' if I recall properly. First thing I usually do when I have put a few layers together - save as XCF before editing anything!
