Icon5 [HISTORICAL ISSUE] - The appearance of Bulgarian and Balkan medieval aristocracy (XIII)XIV-XV century

For the fans of Tsardoms .A talented girl from the group for historical reconstructions ''Chigot'' with the nickname Badamba have made an excellent drawings related to our period .

Scythian Gligor Karlukovo end (the end XIII -the beginning of XIV century):

"... priory chapel "St. Nicholas, "also called" Gligor, "the left bank of the Iskar River near Karlukovo. Two nave church, built somewhere on the border between the XIII and XIV century, is now almost destroyed.Recently discovered fragments of the first layer are removed from the walls and are in the museum's depots in the town of Lovech. These are ... votives and three images on the retaining wall surrounding the open gallery in the churchyard - the images of two young boyars and Abbot Daniel (with logo), St. Nicholas and a candle to which the inscription refers to someone (D) obrosl (ac). ... Eurosystem and costumes of the boyars are parallels in the monuments, and in archaeological finds from the XIII - XIV century. "

The church was established in 1331-1332, the (two years because, according to the Orthodox calendar year begins in September) from the local Bulgarian master of Nis-Pirot region and in the reign of Tsar Ivan Alexander (1331-1371), which is represented in Western areas (the Sofia-Vidin and cities in Eastern Serbia today, then who are Bulgarian) from his uncle Belaur.
From the donor's inscription is understood that the temple was built and fresco work and resources of Arseny, Efimia and Constantine. The last lines speak for implementation of construction at the time of the pious Tsar Ivan Alexander and his uncle Lord Belaur despot western bulgarian land .

    From Badamba :
Dressed in practice are the same - upper garment with front slit that is closed with overlap and no obvious buttons or links, and decorative pieces hanging underarm. Around the neck, front slit armholes and has decorative strips. Under this dress tunic with a single triangle on the wrists. All that is stocked with richly decorated belts. The difference is color - Constantine is a red outer garment and tunic is all embroidered or woven with circles and entered into the double headed eagle. The second donor was a cyan outerwear tunic and red crosses, and the third - with green and red tunic dress. Schemes of the Serbian book "The Church of St. Nicholas in Stanichene" (authors Marko Popovic, Smiljko Gabelich, Branislav Cvetkovic and Popovic Bojan) and his tunic is adorned, but I personally do not. In the same book marked and legs, but only as a silhouette - or wear boots or shoe was lost.

It is not clear how to cloak fastened, but I think his cut is not the same as Kaloyan of Boyana Church. Details of the belt is not visible and the legs have not reserved.

This is some great stuff +rep my friend
"At first we were confused. The East thought that we were West, while the West considered us to be East. Some of us misunderstood our place in the clash of currents, so they cried that we belong to neither side- and others that we belong exclusively to one side or the other. But I tell you, Irenaeus, we are doomed by fate to be the East in the West and the West in the East, to acknowledge only heavenly Jerusalem beyond us, and here on earth--no one." - St. Sava (of Serbia) to Irenaeus, 13th century

Oh, very nice! I had seen something similar in Traditsia's forums as well, probably by the same girl. She had also posted the full version of an article about medieval Bulgarian fashion, parts of which I've uploaded here.

The ordinary people (in frescoes and artifacts):
    - ''Hrelyo tower" of the Rila Monastery (1334-1335):
In 1335 Serbian vlastel Stephen Hrelyo Dragovol updated the monastery, built a large church and a defense tower. This is reflected in the caption of bricks built on the south wall of the tower -"In the reign of King Stefan Dusan,Protosevast Hrelyo with high labor and cost build this tower for Saint Father Ivan Rilski and Mother of God, called Osenovitsa in the year 6843 indiction fifth (1334-35) "... Circumstances surrounding the emergence of self-possession of Hrelyo and his fate is indicative in several respects.First in his face we see a typical example of a feudal lord who, thanks to its large resources and administrative powers to not only show a tendency to separate from the Serbian state, but this place a desire in the presence of a favorable political environment.Hrelyo case, although most typically not remain isolated for a period up to 1355.Secondly, the work of the Serbian feudal lord in the resumption of such prominent Bulgarian cultural and religious center as the Rila Monastery shows that he once fell in a live environment Bulgarian traditions, too quickly to involve them, and even contribute to their recovery and continued. In the frescoes of the chapel of the fortress tower as depicted episodes from the life of St. John of Rila and especially his meeting with Bulgarian Tsar Peter.
