    Default Weird cartoonish crown...

I never really look at officers in units because I play RTW for the enjoyment of gameplay rather than graphics.

Yet viewing Infernocanuck's renowned LP, I noticed the Persian king has a crown straight out of cartoons about medieval kings - golden, tiara type, with triangular cuts.

    Is this some elaborate trolling?

The bold part is logical, at least - "tiara" is Persian in origin

    >tiara

because the persian kings were all girly men leading their armies of cowering slaves (chained together) into the invincible meatgrinder of the greek phalanx

I'd actually suggest the crown to have more metallic skins, give the red curve more (or reduce green and blue curve), also add gloss maps to give it shiny appearance , and oh, the scale armour need that too

nice work so far keep up guys!

And I thought those crowns were pure fantasy... Well, it seems they were used, albeit at an unexpected time in an unexpected place.

Another question - why is the king wearing bronze scale rather than iron/steel which was worn by even by the lowly infantry?

from the yellowish colour, we can guess it's actually gold-coated steel, befit of royalty, gold coatings are pretty old arts actually

During this time period, metalworking wasn't quite as advanced as it was , say, a millennium later. However, for a very long time, bronze was considered a superior material for armor than iron was because :

    1. until more advanced techniques were developed, iron could not be made as brittle as bronze.

    2. Bronze could be cold-worked and didn't need to be heated up to be molded into different shapes, once formed into sheets, metalworkers could put it around a form and start hammering.

    3. Iron rusted and deteriorated rather quickly (unless coated in another material such as copper or brass; Usually, we see this in the construction of those late Persian banded arm and leg guards).

Anyway, the fact remains, iron equipment was not quite as durable or weather-resistant. This is why (generally) the archaeological finds from both this era and the later hellenistic era tend to have bronze artifacts more frequently than iron artifacts- Bronze equipment could be passed down for generations, whereas the Iron equipment would be commonly melted back down and re-worked due to corrosion and other environmental factors.

Lastly, Bronze is considered the material for armor for those of high status or position, because iron was more common and more cheaply available.

Steel? Steel was invented in Greece, around that time. I doubt Persians could have had it.

High carbon steel was invented around 300 BC in India, the technique got imported to the middle east and gained to name: Damascus Steel by westerners because they were peticuliar good at making steel that was emmensely strong...

There was something called Noric steel, used by the romans around 100 BC, but it was not as good nor as well balanced in the Iron/carbon balance as the Indian/Damascine steel...

    Even better for my argument.

That coin looks like the stereotypical medieval European king. Are you absolutely sure it's Artaxerxes II?
