Kopljanici (the English pronounced would be "koplyanitsi") in old Croatian language means "spearmen". The word is derived from word old Croat "kopje" which means a "spear". The modern variant of the world would be world "koplje".

The spear was one of the most common weapons used by old Slavs, and Croats.
Byzantine emperor Kōnstantinos VII Porphyrogennētos notes that: "... almost all of them (Croats) were armed with spears, bows and arrows, and some of them with sword, axe and shield...". It was cheap to make, and effective if used properly.

From which book is taken that quote?Because I had read the cannon edition of De Administrando Imperio (Moravcsik-Jenkins), and there is no such sentence .

Now, I know it has been discussed before, but I am a student of history and I've just asked two of my professors, specializing in Croatian early middle ages, about the banner or any kind of sigil that the duchy and later kingdom of Croatia used in this time period, and they both categorically stated that the checkered banner was almost certainly not in use at the time. There is absolutely NO evidence it was in use at any moment before the late 15th century. The checkered motiffs on the stone tablets that were provided here have hardly anything to do with the banner of Croatia - it was simply a very common type of stone-carved decoration that can be found throughout the world at different time periods. Therefore I don't believe that the inclusion of the current banner would be in any way historically accurate - which is something this mod is aspiring to be (very successfully imho ). This is also corroborated by the relatively new book called Croatian National Symbols, by Mario Jareb; you can look it up if you want to.

First, I cannot provide visual evidence of something not being present in a certain time period -I could theoretically post every single picture of every single artefact, and point out that there is no checkered flag/banner on any of them, but that is unfeasible. Also, there is no reason to be snide, I'm not revealing anything new, I'm simply telling you what two educated university professors, specialised in the Croatian early middle ages, told me. I haven't presented an alternative banner, nor have I found some "revolutionary new evidences of earliest Croatian CoA" - I'm simply saying that, according to them (my professors), the checkered banner was NOT in use at the time. It's up to you to decide if you want to act on the information provided... Also, you can look up the aforementioned book, I believe it says on the first few pages that there is no evidence of the checkered banner appearing any time before 1495. Is there anything else I should say? Sorry if I came across as rude or as being a smartass before....

My friend we are not "hostile" of any kind (if that snife some how means). We like to learn , that's all. That is why we ask for visual examples to search more and may/may not change the COA.

How about this, its dated to 9-11 century, Solin near modern Split, Croatia.

As I said we cannot be certain it was really Croatian CoA, we only know from 14. century and onward that chessboard is Croatian CoA, prior of that, like this early there might not even been a proper CoA, or if there there are no absolutely certain proof what it would be. But this is earlies chessboard we know of.



So mattheus decided, this should be used as CoA. It certainly was CoA later, it might have been in this period as well.
And just for the record, while I may be an amateur historian, Mattheus is a proper and profesional historian, who finished history college.
