I do have a relatively old computer (can't play MedII), but it does look way better when I play it. It's most probably due to the quality of the picture itself. It can't be my machine, because I'm able to play the battles with very high settings.

About me abandoning Sicily: Obviously, I would retake my former provinces during the "Second Punic War", thereby breaking with history itself. So considering that, what would you recommend me to do?

Just keep your current holdings. Losing Sicily would be suicide

To cripple yourself, you could of course decide to only keep and defend the Major Regions until the 2nd Punic War starts and your reconquer process begins

You could try to fight them without Sicily, but I don't think the result will differ from the end result in history... at the very least, it will be tough. It could be fun, though.

CC, do you remember that Epiros campaign in which you lost almost everything and then came back? That was great, too

Yeah, it was a lot of fun The Romans are quite tough opposition when they get going... If there had been anyone powerful in Greece, I probably would have snuffed it that time I find the game is often more fun when things are a bit tougher, within reason. If you were to give up Sicily and expand in Iberia, you could end up with a very interesting campaign.

I'd make sure to have a solid base in Iberia before losing Sicily, though

Yeah, you'll probably want to keep a decent fleet as well, otherwise the Romans might just land troops in Africa...

Ok. Fortunately, I have control over the Western Mediterranean and the Romans can't compete with me navy-wise. However, they did recently manage to sink the best of my two quinquireme fleets (It had golden chevrons)with a quadrireme fleet (sp?). It's partly due to being outnumbered (47 vs. 60) and having a rookie admiral in charge (He still had 4/5 command, though). But this doesn't explain everything, does it?

Yeah, naval fights are often a bit random, particularly on higher difficulty levels. They are a real nightmare on vh/vh...

As many as you want No, but seriously, I find that by that point in my campaign, I can generally attack whoever I want and conquer them, with maybe a few tough battles, but with the war never in doubt. It might be a little different for Rome - I recall spending thirty years kicking Carthage out of Sicily, once, and everyone plays differently, but you should probably have conquered Carthage at least by then, and probably a bit more.

I've always wanted to do the "post your empire" thing, and as I only recently downloaded the mod I'll probably be updating regularly as my H/H Roman campaign progresses. So, as things stand now the battle with Pyrrhus was going well. I managed to kill him and the fight was looking promising until my General managed to get himself killed charging in to the back of an already-engaged infantry unit, causing soldiers to route enmasse. Sadly I didn't screenshot any of that.

Right now, in the year 279BC the southern portion of my Republic looks somewhat like this:

While my big army that could have fended it all off with ease is up here:

But nevertheless I think I'll come out of things okay.

Yeah it does help to have both consuls trying to deal with Pyrrus. The rewards in the south are superior to the rural Cisalpine Gaul.

I pretty much moved all of my starting forces south, and left tribunes and couple of locally trained troops to deal with any invasions in the north. I focused on training troops from Rome and built paved roads at first opportunity to get them south and back quick. Also while the distance was still short, instead of combining hurt units i would run heavily damaged units back to Rome for retraining (that way I could train more than 1 Principes a turn). It is now somewhere round 265bc and I almost got Carthage out of Sicily and took Pharos from Illyria with some tribune named Caesar (Illyrians started it). I couldn't prevent the loss of Rhegion to Pyrrus along with the high office holder there, which Carthage then took and refused to give back to me... So naturally i had to punish them... Still a defensive war in my opinion!

Sounds like you're doing good! I need to reinstall RTR, as things messed up after I tried to install SPQR Total War, and so I will be starting again. But this time I won't be letting my Consul die. If Pyrrhus is stupid enough to let me kill him, then so be it, but I'll make sure to save my Consul next time.

I learned the hard way how useless anyone but a Consul is when it comes to fighting in enemy territory. That minor region the Greeks captured in my screenshot?? A small army was retreating from there and was attacked. I had a General who was of a lesser rank than Consul, and my whole army ran only seconds after making contact with the enemy... the cowards >.<

For FMs that aren't consuls, your FM will not get the "no office" morale hit if you attack on the same turn you enter the enemy territory. So to take a minor city you could infiltrate it with couple of spies (from their home towns) to give you a good chance that the gates will be open and storm it on the same turn. March your principes through the gates in testudo formation and voila!

Not sure if that's what the devs envisioned, but i think it's justifiable that FMs with lower rank can still take punitive expeditions into minor towns or raids across the border. I suppose taking a major city is possible as well, but you'd need quite a few spies and some serious army strength superiority.

Sounds like you're making proper use of the abilities of FM's and agents. It was definitely envisioned that FM's would make one turn expeditions beyond the boundaries of the empire (praetors) and settlements (lower ranks).

So I'm playing my first proper campaign in this mod, M/M difficulty since I had no idea what to expect in that regard. I'm playing Rome, of course. The first battle was a heroic victory in which I killed that Epirote bastard, causing the world to be short one expression. The rest of Italy was surprisingly resistent after that, but they've all been officially taken under Roman taxe...protection.

Now the Cartheginians attacked the tip of the boot and I've been thinking on how to best approuch this war. Obviously the first priority in to counter their invasion and secure the mainland. Assuming that's been completed succesfully, I'd probably push into Sicily and exploit the ongoing conflict between Epirus and Carthage there to pick off the easy targets of both my enemies. Hopefully that war will have weakened those African pretenders sufficiently.

Once that island has been secured I'll turn my attention to silencing that one blasted senator that won't shut up about how Carthage needs to be destroyed.

After that, the world is my oyster!

So you're Roman, eh? And African pretenders? I'd say: Bring it on!
I'm interested in seeing how your campaign progresses. May Carthage not be destroyed.

Aaaaaaand I just found out how important command rating is now. I set a new record, all my troops were broken within 15 seconds of engaging in melee. Arg, arg to say the least.

How do I get a supply of proper commanders actually? I don't have anyone but my Conusl and one Praetor that has any stars at all. Also, when is my dead consul going to be replaced?
