    1. Playing as the Night Watch would be boring because all you basically do is sity on the frozen wall and sometimes you can go out on an ranging. All the time while the other factions have such a good time like these fellas:

-OR- you could go totally out-of-character and WTFsteamroll the North and give the Seven Kingdoms the finger. Which evidently could be fun, but still, not something that you should be able to do without severe consequences.

guys...seriously... the NW will never be playable in the gran campain...

-it would be boring as hell
-it would be against the lore and immersion (NW conquering sunspear...really ? )
-even then it wouldn't be up to it (cause it wouldn't have the numbers to deal with the other factions, in an offensive--march against em--way...hell it would even be difficult defend against em)
-the papal states idea has been discussed in the past and the major drawback is still there...
i..lore-wise not all factions really cared for the watch
ii...even if they did, most probably it wouldn't work properly cause of the geographical positions (westeros is elongated and separated into realms in a "linear-vertical" way)...most probably it would be always a stark (crusading or not) army to save the wall and all the others would get left amidst enemy armies/territories all of a sudden (which would be against gameplay for both the palyer and the AI)...

everybody would like to play as the NW but noone would eventualy like it so as far as common sense and obvious modding/game facts go, the NW will never be normally playable in a gran campaign...still people can always make submods etc, but as long as everybody just wants to suggest and brainstorm only, not even that is gonna happen

you have got my post wrong..in fact i'm gonna edit/play as NW too just for the fun of it... afterall it is a game, so why not ?

still, an "official" release is way different than a guy having fun just for kicks..

what i was trying to say was that all these suggestions, no matter how nice and interesting, are never gonna get realized unless someone actually starts them...
certain ideas, especially "elaborate" ones that seem to contradict the "official" mod's structure and presentation are the least likely to be included or thought about serioulsy (even in future releases)..people have to get interested and work on them on their own...

anyway...once v.1 is out i guess that some motivated people can and will make some really "alternative" submods focusing on various regions and eras of the westeros universe

Hey Ive been reading all the posts on the Night Watch and your all forgetting something. Remember the Night King? There was a Lord Commander of the Night Watch who proclaimed himself King, and took lands for himself and waged war against the Kingdom. Also, they mention that an old Lord Commander once took the Night Watch to aide his brother in battle, though I believe they said his men turned on him. Either way there is precedent. How about something like the Lord Commander must have a very high authority level and a certain amount of strength and then the prompt comes up to declare himself Night King. Of course the downside to this would be that every Kingdom in Westeros would immediately become hostile to him, and some (Starks, Tullys, and probably Stannis and the Iron Throne) would declare war on him. Not everyone, because honestly Dorne, The Greyjoys, and Freys wouldnt care. Renly, the Arryns, High Garden, and the Lannisters would be hostile, but not necessarily declare war on them. It would make it interesting. Especially playing in the North, knowing that at some point when your forces are bogged down in the war in the south, the Night King might just rise up.

Theres other things that can be done of course. Like every coupe of turns a couple of wildling units pop up behind the wall, normally pretty small, though sometimes big. And you can either ride out and immediately take care of it, of course putting a strain on your soldiers, or you could build your forces up and leave them be because their normally not a very large threat. Of course, the longer you leave them, more and more will pop up, and maybe some will eve hide in the forest waiting for Nights Watch to come by to ambush. Eventually if you dont handle it a large horde will come and attack you. So you kind of have options of management, that can have consqeunces. And there should also be some wildling units and deserters that pop up alittle ways south, and handling them before they get into Stark Territory and cause a problem can bring you more gold and make them happier with them, you know a special event. The Starks are pleased, and have given you more gold for your good service etc. If you dont get them then they are upset and you can lose out on gold and they can become hostile if you become to neglectful and your men can become more rebellious and disloyal. So it will behoove you to keep men down south at times, of course that will take away from how many men you have up north to fight wildlings. See it all becomes a management tool. And it makes their game very interesting. I figure, if you become Night King, once your King dies the new Lord Commander has the option to renounce the crown or something. Say if your losing badly and cant keep up the fight against whomever your fighting. Then you go back to the wall, but whatever generals are low on loyalty will become rebels and leave you. Also you have to rebuild trust with the Starks and such by managing properly and not allowing wildlings to get south to build up your gold reserves. See how cool this sounds?

Oh, and also while your fighting down south as Night King, the wildlings keep coming up North. So if you dont leave a strong garrison up North, or completely abandon the Wall, you can have a huge, or several huge wildling hordes coming down at your back. Hell, maybe take a ship with your forces, and leave them for the Starks to deal with. Or you end up having to turn your armies around to confront them. The wildlings can mongol it out and travel south sacking cities and attacking armies. Makes the Nights Watch the most interesting and the hardest faction in the game, but also one with the biggest payoff. Tell me you wouldnt love to Crown yourself Night King and carve yourself out a kingdom in Westeros.

You dont need to make the Wildlings a specific faction. Just have specific rebel units appear up there and make them aggressive. And every so often I think a special unit of soldiers should appear for the watch, or it could be like the Templars and Hospitaliers in the normal game. Knights of the Watch. Mounted and on foot. Because everyone once in awhile knights and lords do join the Watch

As for the Others and Wights, you cant do everything. If anything at all, just make them like special assssin units that appear every once in awhile. Give it like a 30% chance of success when it picks someone to try and kill. Either way, its gone afterwards. Either it died in the attempt, or its just gone. We dont need that much realism.

Making the Watch playable requires only a small change in a txt. file. And i`m sure that a submod will arise making them playable with some additional stuff.

(Like, you can`t recruit units at the wall but you can hire your men as "mercenaries" by sending a General south.)

Would the Nights Watch only occupy the three main castles initially, but then could they have the option (if you were to play as them) to repair the other castles along the wall, including the Queenscrown? And would one be able to build forts or watchtowers within the Gift? Because technically it is the Watch's territory...

Watchtowers are okay; The castles not so. You see; We can`t just place all the other castles on the map and call it a day. They were unoccupied etc. If, in future versions, the wildlings should be added they would have to fight endless siege battles against the watch. Not funny.

And since the player isn`t supposed to play as them..

Of course. With the base version without any changes it will be playable on custom battles. And if you want you can invade whole westeros with them in Campaign, it's just one file you need to change.

Uh, I haven't played but from what I read I have been under the impression that the Watch will be unplayable.

The Night watch will be unplayable, except for custom battles. Modding them to be playable will be really easy, though.
