    Default Panzer Corps: Wehrmacht

*Disclaimer: This is my first review, of any game, ever.

Panzer Corps: Wehrmacht is the rebirth of the classic wargame, Panzer Generals. Corps is the first game developed by the Lordz Games Studio - who if I'm not mistaken were responsible for mods such as Napoleonic Total War (under the name, The Lordz Modding Collective...If those 2 bodies of people are different, please inform me and I will change it so that it is correct). It is a simulation of the Second World War from 1939 to the end of the war, and included are some "what if" scenarios of Germany defeating Russia, UK and invading the US.

    Gameplay Concepts:
The gameplay of Panzer Corps (and it's predecessor Panzer General) is in the style of the 'old-school' wargame - your key points here is that it is a turn-based, hex-based wargame. Unlike some other titles in this genre, Panzer Corps is a very easy game to pick up and play - I learned the basics in less than an hour. However, to fully master this game, you will need expertise and many, many hours of playing time.
The basics are, well, basic. Each unit under your control can move once, and attack once per turn. The exception to this are your Recon units, they can move more than once (depending on their fuel supplies). Your units can only attack if they have munitions, and they can only move (assuming they are vehicle units, tanks/planes/etc) if they have enough fuel. Simple so far, eh? Then you get to factor in terrain types, weather, morale, number of supporting units, whether or not defenders are dug in...almost any variable you can think of (that could have an effect) is here. Mission Objectives are generally the capture of important cities, whose names are outlined in gold on the game map. Decisive victories are awarded if you capture all objectives within certain parameters - generally time limits.
There are something like 400 different units, so if you can think of a particular tank used on the Eastern Front (or Western of course) it is probably in there. If you are the kind of player who loses track of your different units (kinda like me) when you have 13 PzII's, you can rename individual units which in my opinion was a great feature.
I do not have a single major complaint, and certainly none worth mentioning.
For initial simplicity, then intuitive learning curve, I arbitrarily give Panzer Corps 4.5/5 in Concepts.

    Campaigns/Scenarios:
The Lordz included 26 separate scenarios in the game, that can be played individually from the German or Allies perspective, or played as one long German campaign with multiple entry points. You can start the campaign at the start of Blitzkrieg warfare in 1939, at the start of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, on the West front in 1943, or the East front in 1943. There is also a mini-campaign used as training that takes place before the invasion of Poland in 1939. Included in the game are several historical "what if" scenarios where Germany is succesful in the invasion of Russia, invades Great Britain and then finally attacks the US, starting at the East Coast and ends in the West Coast - takes 3 missions.
Over the course of a campaign, the units in your army will gradually gain experience, and become more effective in battle - but if you lose a veteran unit in one battle, their replacements (if you get any) will be more or less, green horns, so keep those vet's alive in battle.
At the start of any campaign/scenario you get to select what difficulty you want it to be on, whether or not supplies are limited, etc - meaning that any given battle can be as difficult or easy as you, the player, want it to be.
If you get bored playing the included scenarios, you can create your own using the included tools.
I haven't tested multiplayer in any way shape or form, so I cannot (honestly) comment on that, but it appears to have all the options that any wargame should have...
The AI tends to be more than competent on even the lowest difficulty settings, though on the lower settings, you can very easily beat it.
I award Campaigns/Scenarios (due to the length, breadth and amount, plus the custom options) 5/5

    Graphics:
First things first, those of you looking for pretty eye candy on the level of something like Crysis, this is not your game (graphics wise...however, you might just fall in love with the gameplay). However, those of us who appreciate the fact that beauty isn't skin deep will find that the graphics are more than adequate.
Each unit in game is (if I remember correctly) a 2-d image/sprite of a 3-d render. The detail that each unit has is actually very nice, and the terrain...well playing on a map (albeit, a very detailed map) isn't terrible in itself. And each shot is accompanied by a nice little poof of smoke, and flame. Hey, when signing up for a game like this, high level graphics are not exactly high on my list of priorities.
Some may not like the look of this game, but I personally love it...it reminds me of hours wasted 10 years ago playing John Tiller's Battlegrounds series.
    4/5
A random screenpic to show the graphics

    Audio:
The music in Panzer Corps is suitably rousing, and keeps you more concentrated on the battle and not what you're doing later in the week. The sound effects also work very well - when you have the Maus firing, you get a large, percussion heavy blast which just sounds awesome, and when you have a little PzII firing you get more of a popgun noise...this disparity really helps identify when your enemies are using their heavy hitters to attack you, if you cannot tell what the enemy is visually.
My one complaint (it is more of a personal issue) is the sound that tracked vehicles make when moving...those particular sound effects just sound all too much the same for me.
Since I'm using a personal problem with the sound, I award the game a 4/5 here.

    Fun Factor/Summary:
There is a lot of fun, and entertainment to be had from this gem by The Lordz Games Studio. Even if you play for less than an hour, you will be cracking a grin as your strategies start to work, and expose holes in the defence of your enemies.
I love this gem from The Lordz, and I give it 17.5/20 - 8.75/10 - 88% (rounded up of course).

I am eagerly watching The Lordz now, and can't wait to play their next release!

Nice review! It's excellent to see old gems redone and I''ll definitely get this game!

I wish the Lordz could get their hands on the X-com series...

    Thanks guys...

For my first review, there is definitely mistakes I made, or things that I'll change up for future reviews...

And if the Lordz could redo the X-Com series, and one of my old favorites, Lords of the Realm....I think they'd make it even higher on my favorite's list of Dev-teams..

Nice review, but of course I have found something to complain about

Since this game is based on the original Panzer General, it would have been nice to focus a little bit on the differences - if there are actually any. From reading your review and two others, I have the impression that there is absolutely no difference in concept or gameplay, only different scenarios.

This would be unfortunate, for several reasons:

    1. Why should I buy a game that is exactly like 17-year-old classic, when only the graphics are slightly more polished, and the scenarios are slightly different? There is absolutely no point.

    2. All the more so, when the flaws of the original game are also kept. The biggest one was the handling of air units, which is totally unrealistic and a major annoyance for game play.

    3. Even more important is that some major flaws (such as the way air units are handled) have been improved on in later games of the series. For example, air craft are handled well in People's General. There is even a fan effort to port Panzer General to the People's General game engine. From the reviews I have read so far, it seems to me that Panzer Corps is actually a step backwards in gameplay.

Again, I am not picking on your review, just saying that it would be nice to compare Panzer Corps not only to the original Panzer General, but also to the improvements that were made (and are being made by fans) to the later titles of the series.

"The cheapest form of pride however is national pride. For it reveals in the one thus afflicted the lack of individual qualities of which he could be proud, while he would not otherwise reach for what he shares with so many millions. He who possesses significant personal merits will rather recognise the defects of his own nation, as he has them constantly before his eyes, most clearly. But that poor blighter who has nothing in the world of which he can be proud, latches onto the last means of being proud, the nation to which he belongs to. Thus he recovers and is now in gratitude ready to defend with hands and feet all errors and follies which are its own."-- Arthur Schopenhauer

I never played the original Panzer General game, so if I was making comparisons to it, my mistake...nor have I played Peoples General...
My recommendation is try it at least before saying its a step back...

And I do understand your concerns, however, to newcomers to this genre/Panzer Generals in general, Panzer Corps is a can't miss kind of game...

    It is a great game...

However, because the Game Gods hate me, somehow the Mount and Blade mod "The Last Days of the Third Age" got released, Skyrim got released and Minecraft was officially updated all within 2 weeks, (and school) my Panzer Corps time has recently disappeared...

Although I respect the Lordz as a modding team and group...this is just not a game I could play. Maybe 10 years ago but now the graphics seem too weak and it would need a great storyline to interest me.
It's like Empire Earth but without the great stuff. I don't know why they put so much time and effort into this but I guess there's a market for retro style games?

Lucklily for us, most players and reviewers disagree, the game has been received very well and got great scores and awards. Sales are beyond any expectation, so there is indeed a market for some classic fun, but challenging strategy gaming.

We just released the demo and the game is on sale on top, so just give it a try!

Even on AAA review sites as Gamespot or Metacritic they gave the game attention and good scores, and that is not common for any "Indie niche strategy game".

It all starts with the release of a demo version of its critically acclaimed and award winning strategy game, Panzer Corps. The demo includes 6 missions from the Bootcamp Campaign, plus the invasion of Poland and the first few turns of the Norway scenario. The transition between the first two scenarios of the main campaign allows players to upgrade their army between scenarios and get a feel for how units improve and gain experience as they travel from battle to battle. Also packaged with the demo is a limited version of Panzer Corps’ powerful scenario editor so modders can try their hand at the near limitless possibilities for making new scenarios and campaigns!

Get the demo from these mirrors: Gamer’s Hell, Worth Playing, Atomic Gamer, Patches Scrolls.

The demo release also coincides with some jolly good news for Panzer Corps newcomers: the base game of Panzer Corps is available for 50% off the original price for the first two weeks of the sale. After two weeks Panzer Corps will jump to a still-fantastic 25% and the heavy discount will last until the end of the Christmas season.

    Cheers,
