    Default - Joar's King Arthur Collection -

I've started this mini project where I intend to release a planned set of five "historical" characters from the so-called Arthurian age. Some of them will be more fantasy inspired than others. To download the portraits, go to the bottom of this post.

I start off with none other than the man himself, King Arthur.

    ---

The next man out is Mordred. I've made three sets for him as well, starting with a portrait without any helmets. On the second one he wears a late Roman helmet, and for the third one I've made a helmet that I've always found highly spectacular, especially combined with blonde hair. I'm certain some recognises where I've found the inspiration for it.

    ---

The third character out is Vortigern. He comes in two versions, with and without armour.

    ---

The fourth and the fifth characters are the two brothers, Hengist and Horsa. Hengist wears a helmet, while Horsa comes in two versions, with and without a helmet.

    ---

I decided to make one final character, namely Lancelot. An Arthurian set of portraits wouldn't be complete without him, I think.

I've also made two "bonus ancillaries", namely Merlin and Morgana.

    Enjoy.

No, here's the thing: I actually started making these types of portraits a couple of years ago, without any of them being made for a specific mod. I just did it for fun. But I'm one of those who have a real hard time letting go, 'cause I constantly keep going back to re-work it, never being quite happy with the result.

Anyways, among the first portraits I made was that of Julian the Apostate ( used in IB:SAI ), Justinian, Phocas, Heraclius etc. Then julianus heraclius wanted a set of historical characters for SAI, and then I continued to make characters from basically the 3rd century AD and forward. I honestly don't know how many I've made today, but I got a "small library" of them. I plan to organize them somehow, and eventually release them for everyone to use.

Just a guess, but did you base Mordred wearing the mask-like helm off of Vortigern's mask from 'The Last Legion'? Also I love the slightly off kilter slightly paranoid look created by Mordred glancing slightly down.

No, it's actually from the flamboyant movie Excalibur by John Boorman from 1981. Here's a trailer in which you see glimpses of Mordred and his golden mask helmet: link.

OK, I've updated the first post again. This time with the final (?) two characters, along with a small "bonus".

In terms of King Arthur as in the legendary story, the best movie ever portrayed in that way. Brilliantly done!. The only movie of Arthur as in the legend I've been able to stomach
Loved how he combined the enchanted era to of the time and place to life, mixed in with the brutality of the the times bringing it all to life
..an absolute treat by John Boorman
