The unit's look very astonishing, and provide a great diversity for a common culture. May I ask if the greeks of Italy, and any Tribe of Italians would fight in the Shield-wall type Hoplite Phalanx, or the slow macedonian one?

Well, that's phenomenal. I particularly like the decision to use entirely Latin names. The Umbri really do look extremely good, and I'm not disappointed by the Samnites either. Fantastic work!

However, I do have two questions. Firstly, have you tested the AI in the city of Rome yet? I'm a little worried that without the standard square city the AI may not know what to do and may just bunch up in a corner or something. I'm also worried about the pathfinding of units - will they actually be able to climb up to the citadel? Will they be able to find their way through the streets? And also, how on Earth are you meant to break into the citadel?

My other question is this: when's the next preview? I can't wait.

one word... "WOW!" Im very impressed with this preview and now im eagily awaiting this mod now

So we now have an all greek focused mod(ie Hegemonia City States), now we have the italian equivelent! I think im going to have to take the whole summer off now

Do you have any battle screen shots of the units you have just shown us?

edit: Another question... will you have an AOR zone where you can recruit other units?

It seems that the macedonian-style phalanx with two-handed pikes never became popular among the Italics; also the Greeks of Italy retained the old-fashioned hoplite phalanx for a long time, also when the other Greeks had adopted the Macedonian model. I seem to remember that when Pyrros was at the head of the Tarentine army, he re-organized the Tarentine city militia as pikemen in the Epirote/Macedonian style; I think that remained however an isolate experiment.

    That's four questions!

    1) Some testing

    2) About the city square, the "city square" area of a settlement is specially marked in the settlement plan text file, and AI seems to be coded to recognize where that is. For example, it's not as if all settlement plans in vanilla are in the same exact spot, because settlement plans all differ from each other and locate the city squares in different areas, and yet AI always knows where it is and defends it.

    3) Pathfinding shouldn't be much of a problem -- the units already can climb up to the citadel in custom battle, even though the pathfinding isn't set up yet, so I'm not considerably worried there when everything'll be fine-tuned.

    4) How to get into the citadel? I have no idea It's a good question, I've forgotten about it lately with preparations for making the city ready for preview. I don't know how people will get into the citadel, maybe we'll be able to bring the rams into the city which will be the ideal case scenario. At the very least, if nothing else works, I'll make it so that citadel gates are always open, so that people can always try to force their way in.

home from us in peace. We seek not
your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch
down and lick the hand that feeds you,
and may posterity forget that ye were
    our countrymen."

Actually, it was two main questions; the first one had three sub-questions branching out from it...

Thank god. I like the occassional phalanx, but I'm glad to hear we'll see a lot more dynamic overhand phalanxes than the slow lumbering two handed sarissa.

Hopefully when you say it never became popular, you don't mean they used a one handed version of the macedoninan phalanx, basically the phalanx of Vanilla. :no
