    Hi Resef,

If you want me to test, any particular faction you would like me to try?
I like the Seleukids cos they spread so wide, but guess Antiochos-Theos will be playing them.
How about Skythia/Sarmatia? I guess fewest folk will try them.
Or Illyris if you had some problems with the towns there?
Or Epeiros? near Illyria and can try fighting the Romans. See if the vanilla RTW bias to them is balanced out.

BTW do you want me to send my list of names?
I was a bit horrified to find the Seleukid leader named Antioche (the female version of the name)
    (I guess Antiochos-Theos was too!)

    Capacity for 30,000+.
Some (eg Iberian & Numidian) have many made up names.
But made-up from components of real names.
But most of them are real.
Also I use a coding system.
    eg
Ibe001x to Ibe699x (for Iberian men)
Ibe001y to Ibe699y (for Iberian women)
    Ibe001z to Ibe699z (for Iberian surnames/tribe names)

The actual names lie in the names.txt file
I actually do all characters, generals spies etc in my names spreadsheet and have it linked to descr.strat

Whichever faction you prefer, I personally have played a quick seleucid campaign, partial thrace, an epirus and a iberian campaign.

As for the names that would be splendid.

I believe I have originally tried converting galatia into a huge city though it didn't solve the issue. I left off since my time is precious when it's just me working on it. and its 1 region out of the other 198 I must worry about.

The settlement plan idea sounds brilliant, I say we should try that eventually. I don't have the time to do it since I already have things on my list. Perhaps in another upcoming version of the patch since it sounds great.

ok shall send you a spreadsheet with the names.
If you like I can prepare the txt files.
However, if you want to use the code system for names, I would need to also edit descr.strat so the code forms are used there.
The great advantage of it is that you can have several people with the same name, as was common among the Romans.
I have also just finished name corrections for regions and settlement names in 'as is' form.
I shall send you by email.
You might want to post up for other folk to comment, but can one post 400 line posts?

    Hi Resef,
I am trying to send my names spreadsheet.
I was gonna include my descr_strat, but that took it to 25MB
Even pasting values of paste links and removing descr_strat it is big
Are you able to receive emails of 12mb to 25mb?

Yes, I believe so however I don't have the needed software on my modding laptop.

A notepad doc would be preferred form. Other is a desktop with windows 7 and extremely fast and modern etc though its not great with rome due to that.

very sorry I didn't know that earlier, I had thought I had all the needed things on here but apparently not. I know how painfully time consuming it is to send the emails with that connection

    My connection like mud.
Been trying to send stuff repeatedly.
Last time got email with single 69kb attachment rebuffed.
This may be gmail issue. I have impression gmail trying to discourage any emails with attachments.
Do you have a private upload area?
Or can I send attachments thru the private message area?

    Hi Resef,

I have never done this before.
Anything I need to know about doing it?
Or is all clear there? I reference you by your email?

I have hit a good patch for email.
Have now sent Area&Town names and screenshots of my map.
I am about to try the Character names.
But at 50,000 rows, even a .txt file may take time.
BTW, there is a limit somewhere around 50,000. I hit it.
But it is now configured for a max just below the limit.

pls let me know if you get the earlier sends.

Something which may be useful to you.
    Hi Resef,

The following may be of use to you.
The game works perfectly without the use of 'mercenary_unit' in EDU's attributes lines.
What I have done with my mod is have no units as 'mercenary_unit' as an attribute in EDU.
I have made ALL units recruitable by ALL factions in the 'ownership' lines of EDU.
The restrictions on who can recruit what unit can be set just in the buildings.
Units do not need to be categorized as 'mercenary_unit' to go in mercenary pools.
I have a separate mercenary pool for each Area, and they seem to work ok with any units you put in them.
The 'mercenary_unit' and 'ownership' lines just seem to cause potential conflicts between themselves and other recruitment rules.

And there is a further great advantage in not using these categorizations.
You no longer need separate mercenary and slave/faction units or models.
So you can have more models/units to use.

One further thing (but this may already have been possible, I never tried)
You don't need separate units for character bodyguards.
e,.g I have Noble Cavalry as a character's attached soldiers/unit and also recruitable as a unit without a character attached.
If you using two models/units for this, it frees up some more.

    Hope this is of use!

    Hi Resef,

If this is handled in your latest patch, my apologies but not yet downloaded.
Found the following error in descr_regions.txt

    Dardania
    Sardica
    thrace
    Dardanii
    131 33 100, thraike
    silver
    5
    6

Just a case of moving 'thraike' down to the resources row.

Although actually the Dardanians were Illyrians, not Thraikians. :-)
But lived on borders of Thraike.
And as mentioned in email, were based at Naissus, not Sardica.
Sardica was part of Thraike. Tribe the Sardi but also Dentheletae, Maedi etc round and about.

Just noticed you also have Brigantes as the rebels of Taurica, presumably also a mistake as they also appear in Tribus Brigantes

Interesting, although does this not demand that every single model has a texture line for all factions?

No it was not, thank you for finding it. I focused on the 'in your face' type of bugs. The no movement area's on the map around certain towns (before the patch) come to mind. Though these errors are just as important! Thank you for finding it. Perhaps a mistake? As you are more versed in the matter I am sure it is.

it being missing from the resources line may not have any effect except not making Dardania part of Thraike.
I haven't yet looked at what you use the hidden resource thraike for.
If you use it for allowing certain kinds of unit to be recruited, it may just not allow them to be recruited.
however it being present in the rgb line may cause some weirdities in play.

    also don't forget the brigantes.
I have a Yorkshire friend who will probably be miffed at his people appearing at Balaclava! :-)

    Sorry, forgot the first point.
I don't know, because I have a texture line for all factions anyway!
Most lines point to a single generic texture set up for things like if the Maurya's conquer Ireland.
Again, it means that the program never crashes because its looking for a non-existent texture.
I have a spreadsheet set up to to produce this! :-)
I can send to you if you wish.
It has paste-links for weapons but you would need to fill in your mods info anyway.

Just the start! We have some surprises in store, some big long term and some in the next patch. Right now I am testing the new content for the upcoming patch extensively before even passing it on to the team since I feel the need to keep CATW as stable as it currently is. And since I know you would love to find this out, we even have the start of some solid plans about the east.

Here is something we should think about covering.

    Elephants in the Classical World

There were 5 main variants of elephant used in the classical period.
The Asian elephant common over the continent has a normal variant and the Sri Lankan variant.
The latter is heavier built, a bit bigger.
It was renowned for being a better fighter and was much exported by Sri Lankan rulers.
It is likely that many Indian monarchs had small units of Sri Lankan beasts alongside their more numerous standard units.
There was probably a smaller Burmese sub-species also; Asian Forest Elephant.

The 'African' elephant used is everywhere described as smaller.
It is thought to be a sub-species which is now common only in East Africa.
However, recent research has shown that interbreeding with the main species is much more common than previously thought.
The three African variants might be the same sub-species or different.
But need to be treated separately as they are unlikely to have mixed well, if at all.
They are all likely to have been the same size.

North-African; those roaming free in Mauretania and Numidia.
Aithiopian; those roaming free in and below Meroe (Nile Valley)
Trogodytic; those roaming free on the east coast of Africa, opposite Arabia.

Consider this inscription about Ptolemy III (originally set up in Adulis(Suakin))
"The great king set out on a campaign into Asia with infantry and cavalry forces and a naval armament and elephants both Trogodytic and Aithiopic which his father and he himself first captured from these places and bringing them to Egypt, trained them to military use.
But having become master of all the country this side of the Euphrates and of Cilicia and Pamphylia and Ionia and the Hellespont and Thrace and of all the military forces in these countries and of Indian elephants and ..."

In fact the Ptolemies and Seleukids seem to have captured and used each other's elephants on several occasions.
And Indian and African elephants do not mix happily, so they would need separate maintenance.
Something to think about modelling. :-)

And of course you could include the largest variety; African Bush Elephant.
The Belgians, when occupying the Congo, evidently had some success in domesticating it.
So could form a 'real', 'fantasy-unit' on the borders of known world.

There is also a small group who think there were still 'Syrian' variants of the African elephant.
    Based on earlier Canaanite ivories.
But I am pretty sure they are wrong, and this variant had died out by our period.
The references to 'Syrian elephants' are almost certainly a reference to 'Seleukid elephants'.
'Syria' being a common way of referring to the Seleukid kingdom.

And in passing, the Sri-Lankan elephants were actually pink!...well ok not completely.
Seriously, they are more prone to pigment loss than normal.
So they tend to have a pinkish hue and pink patches.

I would very much like to hear more about these Eastern plans, factions, cities etc I am almost desperate for a really good authentic Seleukid/Baktrian campaign especially in the east
