Thread: Question about economy

    Default Question about economy

I observed that the starting economy of all factions is very very weak. Some start with 1000-2000 income and others with even weaker like around -1000(expecially the viking nations). Those that have a relatively bi army at the start have weaker economy which is logical, but even after disbanding a bunch of soldiers it still remains rather weak with as I said around 1000-2000 income. The best that I could get was around 4000 with the franks after disbanding a dozen of troops and taking a few settlements. But that is still weak too.It lets me train more troops in time to time, but as I see it it is impossible to develop my empire,my cities.I manage to build some small cheap buildings in time to time in one or two settlements,...but that's all.

This mods looks awesome and has a lot of potential, but this economic depression about what I talk really takes away the fun.Is there any way around this?Is there any submod or will there be any submod that would resolve this?

Sorry for the complain,I really don't want to blame the makers of this mod, because they really did a great work.

Considering it's a Beta, no. There is no Submod adressing the economy.

However, your point is noted and we will consider it in the future. The Economy, I find, is hard on the player but yet I find this a good thing.

    Thanks, Celtic.

I find it a good thing too, forcing you to husband resources and make smart choices. Sometimes to make ends meet you just have to go on a raid. Bit like being a viking really!

Thanks for the quick reply guys.

I get your points. And you are right about the vikings that they had to raid.Maybe the player should have some bonus when raiding are just a bit better economy from the start(maybe from trade).Or you could just lower their units upkeep(as vikings liked to go to war, they don't need big upkeep).

I going to play and try a danish campaign and see if I can get their economy going by conquering a bit in Brittania,..but as I see it they need just a bit more money.

Well, like I say it's still a Beta. So in future there may come bonus's etc. The Raid bonus has been mentioned before.

The frankish empire starts off with about 8000 extra troops that need to be disbanded or economic collapse happens, was this intentional?

I'm playing Welsh and I've found the economy to be ok, used my starting my army to take Chester then Bristol then Tamworth, adding some reinforcements along the way. I still had enough to keep building something in most settlements on most turns, sometimes saving up for some of the bigger ones. Choosing the middle option when taking a city helped, got about 4000 a time. I always thought it was the lack of a centralised economy that made conquest so difficult in that era anyway and that conquering anything at all should be a challenge really.

there is no need for a raid bonus IMO - people should just learn to demolish buildings in raided setlements the even a smal town or village can generate at least 10000+ income

I suggest actually it is too easy to demolish all kinds of stuff that a raider couldn't wipe out - middens, hot springs, hunting grounds and the like - and make an insane amount of money. To make life a little harder - and more realistic - I suggest some of these things are made hinterland (undemolishable) so the AI doesn't have to start again all the time from ground zero. I've tried this and raiding is still well worthwhile - but no longer silly money from a base level village

Does the AI devastate a settlement once occupied? Don't think it does, so limiting the scale of possible destruction also levels the match a little. Ability to trash every single thing is a bit of an exploit.

OK, I just started playing this mod, I have taken over a few towns and noticed all I can build in a building screen is a Colony. Plus a few of my towns that I started with have a option to build a colony in the build screen. So I take it I have to build this before I get an option to build a Vassal and then a Royal Demesnes?

This is the first mod I've come across that I siege and sack as a rule, 3 turns of income in one go! now quickly build those minor city walls :-)
Almost fainted when I seen they costed 22K.
Playing as the Normans, money is to tight to mention...

There is a very nice economics sub mod for the Third Age, perhaps you could ask that guy to work something up for this mod?

This submod includes bonuses for raids and penalties for losing territories or battles (like the enemy would sack your camp). It is supposed to help balance the AI more and keep it from becoming either too weak or too strong and flexes depending on how the AI grows or shrinks in power.

When I started a game as Northumberland, my economy grew very fast. I still have a fairly small kingdom but alot of wealth. Normans grow much slower but do have some good boosts once you get going. I agree about the Franks having financial woes. It is really the only faction nearly impossible not to start the game in the hole. And financial growth at least, is very slow. I would think finance would be one of its strengths given the changes charlemagne and frankish rulers made for their kingdoms. Hordaland has pretty slow growth to start, but they do seem to grow faster and sooner to financial stability than the normans. When I played as the Welsh, it was somewhere in the middle. The welsh have a decent economy but part of its strength comes from decent units that are also low recruitment cost and low upkeep. For the most part, I think the game is fairly well, nicely and realistically balanced financially speaking, except for the Franks.
