    In exchange for the surrender of Constantinople, the emperor's life would be spared to which,he replied:
    To surrender the city to you is beyond my authority or anyone else's who lives in it, for all of us, after taking the mutual decision, shall die out of free will without sparing our lives.
    He died on the day the city fell.
    His last recorded words were: "The city is fallen and I am still alive", and then he tore off his imperial clothes so as to let nothing to distinguish him from any other soldier and led his remaining soldiers into a last charge where he was killed.

    But first, an explanation is due.


    Ruler of this great land
    - He was ruler of the Roman Empire
    My brothers divided and fell
    - His brothers, Constantine II and Constans fought for the western half of the Empire. Constantine II died from this. Constans then ruled the west.
    The pretender smashed as well
    - Until the usurper Magnentius assassinated Constans. The mystery person then beat him in two battles, leading Magnentius to commit suicide
    I had great victories in the west
    - Under his reign, he defeated the Allemani and campaigned over the Danube against the Sarmatians and the Quadi
    But stalemate in the east
    -The war with the Sassanids however, not as successful

    Two relatives to reign below me
    - He elected two of his cousins as 'Caesar', as managing the empire was too much
    And one took my place
    - Julian, one of the 'Caesars', succeeded him
    I challenged to meet him
    - Julian gave himself the title of 'Augustus', so the mystery person marched against him
    I was baptized hastily
    - He was baptised by the Bishop of Antioch
    But I died before we faced
    - The above was done because he resolved he could never meet Julian, and died of fever in Cilicia

    Thus, the answer of the riddle was Constantius II. Thank you all for your guesses!

    Aaargh, I was so close. The first thing that sprung in my head was Julian the Apostate, but that didn't correspond. So close!

    Cant be Marcus Aurelius, as he died of an illness. Also, he was adopted and more or less a rightful heir. Well, that's just my knowledge, though. Could also be terribly wrong.
