Spurius Octavius Cilo

Born into a poor part of the Octavian gens, Spurius had little of the childhood enjoyed by his much richer relatives. Unlike many of them, he did not have the privilege of a Greek tutor, or of an army of slaves. Brought up on the small family estate outside Rome, Spurius learnt from the land and from an odd tutor. When he became a man, his father secured him a position as a legate to an ageing pro consul in Sicily. Although an unfashionable province, there was the odd rebellion to put down and the occasional plunder from captured pirates. He began to make a name for himself, and left Sicily at the age of 23. For the next few years he managed the family farm as his father was mainly based in Rome, he had become a Quaestor many years ago but did not hold any offic afterwards yet retaining his position as senator for life. At 30, Spurius got together the million needed to run, and was elected as the 5th Quaestor and served in a remote backwater. Now a little older, and having been a relatively successful Aedile with the little money he had, It was time to run for Praetor
