Just noticed a serious flaw with the battle rules and units.
First of all, there's no differentiation between heavy and light infantry in the recruitment thread. So I'd make Zweihänder and Landsknecht heavy infantry. Swordsmen are light. Halberdiers, spearbands, and pikemen are obvious spear infantry.
Now for the bigger flaw.
As of right now, a unit of musketeers is just as good in battle as a unit of arquebusers, despite costly a load more. Kind of a problem, which I didn't think of when I wrote the battle rules Fortunately m based unit costs on quality and the numbers happen to be very convenient.
Calculate casualties normally using the ratios. Then multiple each unit's casualties by the cost of the other unit, rounding to the nearest whole number (no half-dead soldiers allowed ). Example:
810 Halberdiers vs. 810 Spearbands
- Calculate with damage ratio (1:1) -- 81 each
- Multiply by cost (halberdiers cost 2.5, spearbands 0.4) -- 81*0.4=32 halberdier deaths; 81*2.5=203 spearband deaths.
Which is much more reasonable than 81 each, since halberdiers are the best spear unit and spearbands are the worst.
This doesn't affect misfire chance.
So in melee units, it reflects superior fighting skills, armor, weaponry, and horses. In ranged units, it reflects how well they aim.
