    Somewhere in lapland? doesnt really say where in this bit im reading.

    "The 112th retreated, leaving much of its heavy equipment and vehicles behind. Following this success, the Finns shuttled reinforcements down to the defensive line in front of Kemijärvi. The Soviets hammered the defensive line without success. The Finns counterattacked, and the Soviets were pushed back to a new defensive line where they stayed for the rest of the war."

    This thread is cool! My knowledge is limited, but it's so fun to have a picure/ painting as a springboard for further study. Starting from the first post I ended up with the decision to buy V.D. Hanson's "Carnage and Culture"!

    Kameraden - that was hard to guess! But other major pockets were already mentioned.

    And your hint about early 1940 was helpful.

    =========================

    Ok, so maybe this one (cuz of nice picture):

    Hints - it is an important battle from Ukrainian history (they even celebrate it each year), it has 2 alternative names:

    It might be difficult (I also didn't really know about this battle before I found the picture ). But you have several good hints.

    PS: If there are any Ukrainians here, please let other nationalities to think a bit before you answer.
