That's actually wrong, it is another battle from Shah Abbas' reign. The figure with the long mustache is actually shah Abbas and the figure adjacent is Hafiz Ahmed Pasha. Thus making it either the battle of Sufiyan or the 4th Siege of Baghdad.

Money, might I interject? After doing some research, I think I see the confusion here. I believe you have noticed that the painting is indeed Persian and not Ottoman (its from the Chehel Sotoun in Isfahan, built during the reign of Abbas II), so it would be naturally confusing to think that the Safavid's painted an Ottoman victory. However... I still believe that this is Ismail I and Selim I (questionable), and the Battle of Chaldiran.

See the Fresco, which shows the mass of Ottoman cannons wiping out the Safavid cavalry:

Apparently, the painting was meant to honor the charge of Ismail's cavalry, even though the battle was a defeat. A glorious defeat?

If so the people depicted are certainly not Ismail nor Selim, the guy on the bottom is definitely Abbas I and the guy facing him is Hafiz Ahmed Pasha. Perhaps that is what is so confusing although now that I see it it is the Battle of Chaldiran. But the figures it portrays are completely wrong, it seems likely that Abbas II may have depicted himself or his grandfather Abbas I as Ismail. But really who it depicts makes no sense and actually portrays two figures from another battle in 1600. Sorry for the confusion.

No need for any apologies, mate! I'm glad you brought up this discussion. It's an interesting debacle and we still don't have any definitive answers. I've noticed so many inconsistencies surrounding these pieces. So many sites have them titled differently. I even see this website, mixing up Abbas I and II do you agree?

Another point you made I forgot to mention, you're right, that surely doesn't look like Selim I. I haven't seen any depictions of Selim I with a beard. The Grand Vizier during Chaldiran was Hersekzade Ahmed Pasha or Dukakinzade Ahmed Pasha, maybe? I didn't find any portraits of Hafiz Ahmed Pasha.

In that Chaldiran picture it seems like the enemy figure is a Sultan based on his hat. But it seems more like the long bearded Hafiz Ahmed Pasha (who was some sort of religious guy). I have never seen Hafiz Ahmed Pasha either but I remember reading in some old a book about Abbas I they showed the painting and really I can understand why. Maybe this is like when they depicted Roman battles to be like a medieval battle in the Middle ages or something.

    Ipsus?

Edit: it has to be the battle of Gaza 312BCE, from Ancient Warfare.

It is Gaza, for Igor has made it so.

Yes, it is! Saint Quentin 1557 by the great Artist Angel Garcia Pinto! It's a detail from one of his work titled 'Arrabales de san Quintin 1557'

    Here his site: http://angelgpinto.blogspot.it/
