I suppose I should consider this a correct answer.
The wikipedia article refers to it as the Second Battle of Ypres.
The vapor plumes in the photograph are chlorine gas, the first instance of the use of a poison gas in this war (by the Germans).
Six thousand allied soldiers killed in the first ten minutes.

Which opened a gap but the Germans lacked the reserves to push through it, not having considered it's deadly effectiveness.

Wiki is wrong. As I said before, it's the battle of Somme, not Ypres. Page 181, see the picture.

Regrettably not a single photo of the gas attack at Ypres exists, undoubtedly because it was unexpected.

Edit, what do you say, Paleologos?

In deciding the battle I intended it to be the first battle in which a poison gas was used to kill soldiers.
That was the 2nd Battle of Ypres.
So I searched for a photo under the inquiry "2nd Battle of Ypres Chlorine gas attack" and I got this image.
So I take both answers as correct, giving rep to both of you and recommend it to be Ludicus' turn.

    Indeed.Rep +

It's one of the most important battles in the country's history. The beginning of the end of Habsburg Portugal began in 1640.
On 24 November Olivares ordered the Portuguese to help suppress the Catalan revolt. In the next week, the Country revolted and had to beat off Castilian successive attempts at reoccupation in 1659 (battle of the Lines of Elvas), 1663 ( battle of Ameixial) and finally,in 1665, the battle of Montes Claros. the final and decisive victory.
The year 1665 in Spain marks the failure of the financial solutions attempted for meeting the increasing costs of war and the financial burden of empire. On the death of Philip IV, 1640, the royal authority also collapsed, and the Spanish financial system collapsed with it. The reign of Charles II (1665-1700) saw the collapse of internal authority, tax freeze and the retreat of hegemonic conflict.

Upload it on imgur or somewhere the next time, without the name. I hadn't seen mad orc answer, I clicked on it to see if I could expand it, read the name accidentally and had the fun spoiled.
