He's the painted fool that stood outside Emily's room once, protecting her from creatures of the night.

Katherine neglected to mention that he had been standing outside the room of both Emily and Katherine, protecting them from himself...

But he's moved on since then of course, you are looking at the King and Queen of Masithalisa. So yes, he's the man I chose to replace your father...

Oh how she hated talking to children...

Arthur gave Katherine a stern but slightly cheekish look. 'Replacement', was he not more than that? He turned to the two girls again, and smiled charmingly.

    A pleasure, ladies.

Emily waved a hand in their general direction but Daisy stood and curtsied.

The Krak is yours, mother, King Arthur. How may we be of service?

Arthur motioned for Katherine to speak, since he did not know much of why they were actually there.

    Katherine sighed.

Just carry on doing whatever it is you've been doing. I'm going to bring a bit of order back here, the Boars et cetera, we'll rename it too. I remember Sanglier Fortress being discussed many years back, that'll do for starters. My room?

    Untouched, mother.

Very good, Arthur will you join me is dealing with my affairs?

    Of course.

Replied Arthur, with a slight peculiar mix of scottish and welsh accent.

And so they did just that.

    ---

A week or so later the Krak was renamed and Boar pennants flew from the ramparts. Arthur had been surprised to see Katherine taking things slowly - perhaps she was still unused to life away from Mesithalisa - but today she stormed into their chambers like a woman possessed and thrust a letter at her husband.

What is the meaning of this? is this a joke?

    Baronette Katherine of Otmoor.

I am glad to hear of your return to our shores. May I offer you belated condolences on the death of the Lord Fitzroy, he was a kind man and is deeply missed.

Arthur had just returned from his morning ride through the woods when Katherine stormed into the chambers. He stood shirtless, wearing only a pair of modest looking pantalons.

    What?

Asked Arthur, as he read the letter.

Otmoor, Arthur? Otmoor?! After what happened there!

Katherine had other grievances with the letter but this one was the one that stood out the most.

    It's just a title.

    Arthur shrugged, indifferently.

A title that ties us to my brother and the rest of his ilk! Renounce it, we have O'Hagan or York to choose from, let's play them against each other for us.

How could they rise through the ranks when in service to a Baron? O'Hagan held Arthur's lands whilst York held hers, her logic said that they should see who would pay or give the most to have them.

I am a servant to no one. It is a ceremonial title, and we need the florins.

Replied Arthur, as he put on his linen shirt.

I shall speak with O'Hagan after the war against Scotland.

Who knows how long that war will last...

Katherine touched Arthur's arm but did not argue any more, he seemed to have a plan.

I'm not going to this circle thing, whatever it is. They think they can lord it over me because I'm not their liege any more, I'll tell them I'm entertaining foreign dignitaries as Queen, that'll shut them up.

    It most certainly will.

Said Arthur, as he began putting on his travelling clothes. He would depart for Scotland that same morning...

When Arthur left, Katherine did something that she had never done before: She wished him luck. She had never feared for his life in battle before but now there were bigger things on the line and he would need luck in regaining their titles...

That day she sat in the hall and took an audience for all those that sought it. After boring herself with matters of the town she excused herself and began writing missives, calling upon all former Boars to return. Hopefully a former senior member of the Boars would return, she wished to ask about the state of the Boaricade before she attempted to reopen it herself...

Several weeks later, a simple letter arrives. The parchment is dirty and stained with mud.

    To Kate, my wife.

The battle went well. The scots were defeated and forced away from the field. The war continues, Edinburgh is next. I have been given, by the king naturally, Dunbar, a town on the southeast coast of Scotland, it is a royal burgh with a mighty castle and well crafted defenses.

Dunbar... The place had been ruined in the last war, hadn't it? Constant naval bombardments and sappers attempting to get under the walls, damaging the place's foundations. Ah well, another place to their name was another place...

Accompanying the mud stained letter is another dirty letter, however not dirty in that same sense. It was some sort of erotically fuelled letter, written by the hopeless romantic that was Arthur. It described in detail his lusts for his beloved wife and her, as he put it, lucious 'goods'...

Lord York, having not seen his cousin in years, decided it was time to mend their friendship. And so he arrived with a small retinue in early July of 1455.
