A prime example of many Germans can be found in F1 - Michael Schumacher does not sound like your typical German speaking English. Same with Nico Rosberg (even if I still think he's really Finnish).
When I first came to Europe in 1989 from Australia I was asked to bring a silver coin to an Italian family living near Pisa. When I spoke to them on the telephone they sounded exactly like an American would. The reason for this is that there were US Air Force bases nearby and the work they did, car mechanics, meant that htey picked up English from the Air Force that were in the area.
