I was using the Tam O'Shanter that was taken from Wangrin's model library (found at the bottom of his posts). Now I am just using the less attractive one vanilla one from Empire until I can create a Lod4 for it.
It seems strange to me that you need to make a unitmodel.variant_weighted_mesh when you are making a unitpart.variant_part_mesh for the hat. Not all unitpart's are included in unitmodels (like the kilt for example). Just a thought.
Thanks for clarifying about the plumes. What about the making texture files for the unitmodels? Is this necessary?

So just to confirm, all of the things I need to use the ToS in-game is:
1. Unitmodels (Lod's 1-4.variant_weighted_mesh)
2. Texture files for the unitmodels.
3. The individual ToS Unitpart.variant_part_mesh.
4. The texture files for the unitpart.
Is that everything?
