Thread: Your favorite clan?

    Default Your favorite clan?

I know, there are plenty of threads on this topic in the general discussion as to which of the playable clans people like using in the single player campaign. This one is specifically for the historians.

I stand by my belief that one cannot fully appreciate Shogun 2 unless they know some Japanese history. The reason is the Sengoku Jidai is just wealthy in terms of colorful characters, whether it's Takeda Shingen who overthrew his own father, Uesugi Kenshin who became the lord of his own lord, or Oda Nobunaga who seemingly assassinated everyone who looked at him funny.

So this certainly isn't an easy choice but my personal favorite might be the Amako clan. The reason for this is their especially psychotic family politics. First off, for a time they were the dominant power of the Chugoku region (aka Western Honshu), and much of their military history was a back and forth against the Ouchi clan and their vassals, the Mori. Nonetheless, factions appeared within the clan and in 1554, Amako Haruhisa ordered the execution of his uncle, Kunihisa, several other family members, and a number of prominent generals. This was done ostensibly for Haruhisa to consolidate his hold within the clan and in hindsight, the intra-family purge seemed counterproductive, just as the Otate no Ran for the Uesugi, although the extent to which is contributed to their eventual fall is surely a matter of interpretation.

But fall they did to the Mori, and here entered the other interesting character of the Amako clan, their retainer Yamanaka Shikanosuke. He vowed to restore their clan to their former power, found Amako Katsuhisa (who fled the purge to become a monk), and with the support of Oda Nobunaga recaptured part of their territory. However, when the Mori counterattacked, Katsuhisa committed seppukku and Shikanosuke was captured and executed.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Oh man. Someone's heard of Shikasuke. Hee. I don't even know where to begin. Here. A picture is worth a thousand words.

This is (artist CG, of course) him vowing to the moon three eves after the Amako's destruction. It is recorded that he swore to "endure all the pains of heaven and hell" to see his master's legacy restored. One of the great tragic heroes that no one's heard of.

    To answer your question:

UesugiNagao clan. No contest. People on this forum should know my quirks regarding Uesugi Kenshin. Usami and Nagano (Go look up Nagano Narimasa and you'll see why) comes as a close second, followed by the Takeda and the Murakami.

Oda, his depiction as demon and his military strategies resembles cao cao from Romance of three kingdoms whom I'm fond of.

Definitely the Uesugi. Kenshin was such a military genius, he could've brought Nobunaga to his knees had he not died before advancing to Owari. He was the only one able to match the Tiger of Kai. And only a true badass can garner the name 'God of War'...
I don't know a ton about his personality yet, sadly, but I've been reading that he was one of the few idealists that fought for clear principles like justice in a treacherous time like that. And it's admirable to see that someone could keep his morals and scruples when it seemed so beneficial to just get rid of them.

Coz he was a tea sucking bastard that only takes matters seriously when writing haiku, inviting tea masters and admiring new tentacle porn ukiyo-e prints.

Mmm there's no "one favourite" but it would be either of these:

Tokugawa: Ieyasu's patience and perseverance. Building his clan over a long time and by making the right decisions, being bold when needed, careful when needed transformed his clan to become 2nd to none when hideyoshi died. He also had several interesting retainers such as tadakatsu honda, naomasa yi, yasumasa sakakibara. And finally, tokugawa was one of the clans that showed great loyalty toward their alliances compared to most other clans.

Tachibana: They had the only female clan head of the time that i know of: Ginchiyo tachibana, they also fought for a long time against the shimazu. Sadly they aint in the game :| (Could be DLC as a unique clan employing females as generals/rulers for a change. Give us kunoichi! mehe..)

Uesugi: same as Ying, Kenshin is just <3 one of their retainers was also the person that lit the flame of war that led to the battle of sekigahara. They had the guts to employ the aid and later install a 14 year ol kid as head of the clan

There's other "persons" i like alot from this period, but that doesnt really include the clan. (masamune date, yoshihiro shimazu, etc etc......)

    i find kenshin's, shingen's and nobunaga's deaths highly ironic.

Shingen died during his campaign against tokugawa at a time he was wiping the floor with them, tokugawa managed to halt his progression somewhat by refusing to fight.

Kenshin died of illness, he wiped the floor with nobunaga's forces who outnumbered him then had to retreat due to the onset of a harsh winter and died soon after by illness.

Nobunaga: Fool of owari who wasnt the fool people thought him to be, was in a position that allowed him to expand unlike takeda/uesugi. Personal oppinion puts him as a great tactician and strategist but not kenshin/shingens equal. (hell i rate ieyasu better due to his intelligent choices) But he was open to western ideas. As with shingen and kenshin he died shortly after starting a campaign to unify the rest of the land. Betrayed and killed by mitsuhide akechi.

To top the cake..... well ill just quote: (meh forgot the exact wording and dont have time to search for it but its akin to this line Nobunaga prepeared the dough, hideyoshi kneeded (sp?) it, then ieyasu sat down and ate it.

My favorite clan is Imagawa, only because of Yoshimoto and his bad luck at Okehazama. That's why I always love playing Nobunaga's Ambition as Yoshimoto and executing Nobunaga afterwards.

Stellarex, you're absolutely right when you say that you can't fully immerse in the game without some historical perspective. I felt it the minute I needed to pick a clan for my first campaign.
So I read a bit on history of Asia's easternmost isles. Being thorough as I am, I started from the earliest human settlements to Sengoku jidai. You can imagine I'm still unfamiliar with all the juicy details of this extremely vivid period.
But then I picked the Dragon of Echigo, Kenshin. And finished that campaign.
    Who'll I pick next? I'm deliberating.

Shimazu because of the amount of battles they won using their feints against numerically superior foes.

Dang forgot: The tachibana clan, they dared putting a female as the head of the clan (until she married muneshige), they fought the shimazu for decades, and they had muneshige tachibana/ginchiyo tachibana ^^
