Thread: The Sea Republics

  1. #1

    Default The Sea Republics

So,basically,I had this idea. What it talks about? It's very simple,it talks about the Sea Republics, their trade, their fighting, and so on.You can be an existing Sea Republic(Amalfi,Venice,Genoa,Pisa,Ragusa,Ancona,Trani)or create one from scratch,it can also be a non-Italian state,it isn't a problem for me.It is imperative that the created state is,anyway,an Aristochratic Republic,Duchy or Kingdom and that it starts from just one city bordering the sea.The starting year is 1000,and the world will be more or less like this

very, very approximate map.The game is a WIP,very much WIP.As of now,I only have in mind the military system, wich will be very simple,it'll take in consideration:

    -Damage
-Ranged attack(it's 0 if the unit doesn't has a bow or a crossbow)
    -Speed
-Size(the number of men in a unit)
    -Cost
-Stamina(basically,how long can a unit run before tiring himself)
    -Morale

the minimum point is 0,the maximum being 4
the sheet of your average berber tribesman could very well be

    -damage 2
    -ranged attack 0
    -speed 2
    -size 200
    -cost 300 credits
    -stamina 3
    -Morale 3

just an example.I need someone to help me to invent the trade system, etc.I got in mind a system of trade goods that can be found in some determined regions, but i'll have to sleep on it,since I got school tomorrow.
In order to enter the game, you need to present yourself with the following sheet:

    -Nation
    -Ruler
    -Capital
    -Culture
    -Language

very simple,I'll take Amalfi,to make you see,and the sheet could look like this

    -Nation Ducatus Amalphitanus
    -Ruler Manso I
    -Capital Amalfi
-Culture Greek(I know they were many in the city)
    -Language Latin
    very simple.

If you're interested, say it.I think it could turn out into a very good game, who knows,it can even last much time.Game,as said before,is a WIP,I need ideas about trade, for example, and for the cost and recruitment of the soldiers.Suggestions are not welcome, but encouraged and needed. Thanks for the attention.
I'm also putting up a list of non-playable nations with who, anyway, the player can interact(making wars with them, trading with them, buying land from them,or even allying with them)

    list is the following

    -Eastern Roman Empire
    -Emirate of Sicily
    -Emirate of Cordoba
    -Principality of Salerno
    -Papal State
-Kingdom of Italy (it is the Lombard kingdom in northern Italy, part of the HRE)
    -County of Barcelona
    -Bulgarian Empire
    -Kingdom of Croatia
    -Fatimid Caliphate
    -Hamdamid Emirate
    -Idrisid Emirate of Morocco
    -Kingdom of Burgundy
    -Kingdom of France
    -Kingdom of England
    -Alba(Scotland)
    -Denmark
    -Sweden
    -Germany
    -Leòn
    -Castille

    Player nations as of now:

-me Duchy of Amalfi under Manso I
-"Pericles of Athens" of Venice under Peter II Orseolo
-"Bjorn" of Genoa under Dante I Barbarossa
-Ruire of Galway under Conchobar I Sinnach mac Ruadrí

UPDATE:I updated the land soldiers system. Now I need suggestions for the mercenaries, the recruiting system, trade and the ship system(wich could mirror the soldier system, with adapted statistics).

Can I take Byzantium? Or does that not count because it's not a Sea Republic. I'm kinda confused by the rules of this...

Hmmm,no,you can't.Still, you can take a Roman city and ask authonomy, you see,you can become an authonomous vassal, though still (de jure)loyal to Byzantium, more or less like Amalfi, who was a Roman vassal, but who de facto on its own.I got some more ideas for the military system.Oh,and remember to give feedback. It is needed.I need ideas for the trade system, the mercenaries system and the recruiting system.I'm also putting up a list with the non-playable nations,NPCs,you understood,no?

Could I create an Irish city-state?*

*They did exist at various points, "city" being relative.

As the others said, you need to take a city and make it independant, then, after, you'll kick the germans out of Britannia.Suggestion:you can take Cardiff or Mann as a city state

Man,you must be a city state,as I said many times. If you want to be Croatian, take a coastal Croatian city, like Biograd,Solin or Nin.Oh,and, please, attain to history,I don't think Croatia was Byzantine culture in the Middle Ages.I thought the Croatian language was already present. Thanks for understanding.

To the others:trade will be based on EU3.With the regions having a determined trade good with a determined value,I'll have to dig more about it,anyway.

Sorry, sorry sorry. I didn't really think Croatia had it's own unique culture. I will reedit my country. Thanks for being patient.
