A shame you folks neglected to mention the Age of Wonders series. They should work without any problems on older laptops.

Want some games that will run on older machines.

    You should only try GOG

While some of them are also on steam, they are nearly half the price.

I second this. But be careful Blitzkrieg 2 eats a lot of resources when the map is full of units with guns blazing. I played on a desktop about 6 years ago, it was a decent desktop but the game still slowed it down a fair bit.

I was actually quite surprised when I got Mount and Blade it runs great! I still have to turn off shadows or put them as low as I can and reflections.

    It's a great game!

The Disciples 2 Gold Bundle. It belongs to the genre of Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Wonders. It's highly atmospheric (very dark and gloomy - I love it! ), you get a lot of fodder with this pack, it has a nice economy system that does away with the totally-devoid-of-any-need-for-strategical-thinking collecting of new troops (see HoMM) and an interesting and clever battle system. Avoid Disciples 3 - even if it would run on your craptop, because they did away with everything that made Disc. 2 so great.

Are you in for naval sims? The Sonalyst games should work well enough. There's Fleet Command, a naval tactical sim, Sub Command, a modern sub sim and Dangerous Waters, a modern sub warfare sim (including a driveable frigate). All three games were equipped with mission editors, so there's a lot of fodder to be found on The Net for these. Oh, and the latter two support Microsoft Speech!

Good guess! You got great eye for games. It IS Romance of Three Kingdoms. And it sure will run on low-end craptops!
What's more, you can easily GET HOOKED on this beast for years!

(I have friends in their 40s still playing this game)

If it hasn't been recommended, try Deus Ex.

The games by indie dev Introvision are interesting and not too hungry for resources. There's Uplink, a hollywood hacking game, Defcon, a game where everybody loses and Darwinia, an interesting rts where you're tasked to save little virtual people from a computer virus.

LotRealm 1 even more so than 2, despite being DOS-age old, as it is more challenging and you can design your own castles; in 2 you only have preset templates to choose from. But you can get a bundle of both games on GOG.com. Avoid Lords of the Realm 3, though. That one was a failure.
Regarding the genre: These games are pretty much spiritual predecessors to the Total War games: turn-based campaign maps with real-time battles.

If you're into WW2 battles, then Combat Mission is great. Not much eye candy, but for realism and absorbing gameplay it rocks.

The first three - Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin, and Afrika Korps will run on pretty much anything, and you can pick up the box set for next to nothing.

Aimed at serious wargamers though, so move on if you just want to run around/drive around killing things
