Rule Britannia - the 1911 AH-IH (set in the 1642 timeline)

The year is 1911. The Imperial Union of Britannia is the world's premier superpower, with a massive colonial empire stretching from Canada and the Caribbean, to the British Home Isles, to the heart of Africa, to Japan and Formosa in the Far East - truly, an empire on which the sun never sets, and of course one that brings its masters unimaginable amounts of money and resources annually. However, in no way does this mean that the Lion's mastery over the globe is unchallenged.

In Europe, two old rivals - the Holy Roman Empire, united within forty years of Emperor Ferdinand III's victory in the Great German War, and the Russian Empire, modernized and stabilized by Tsar Alexander II in the 1880s and 90s - still wait around the corner for a shot at unseating the Lion and taking their place in the sun. Neither has a colonial empire that can match the British - in Russia's case, it has no colonies at all - but their supremacy on the continent is unquestionable, and going up against one of them without powerful friends will almost certainly lead to a stalemate, while fighting both simultaneously would end in nothing short of disaster. Matters are not helped by the emergence of the Commune of France, a government 'of, by and for the working class' that displaced the Bourbon monarchy friendly to Britannia following the catastrophic Franco-Imperial War of 1870, and which is considered anathema to the Cavalier Ideals of 'Faith, Honor and Valor' that have guided British society since Emperor Charles's glorious victory in the English Civil War.

On America, another ancient rival stirs. The Commonwealth of Columbia, spanning from the old Thirteen Colonies to what used to be the states of Colombia and Venezuela, has not forgotten their roots; their ancestors were the Puritans who fled persecution in Britannia Proper following their many, many acts of defiance toward the House of Stuart, and their descendants - the modern Columbians - still bear their ancient hatred toward Catholics everyone who isn't a Puritan, especially the descendants of the British who sent them packing. They have slowly but surely forced Britannia off the Americas, and all that's left in their sights now is Canada; rest assured that if they can eject the British from the 'True North', they will move to attack the Home Isles (or as they'd put it, 'reclaim our ancestral homeland from the Papists') and enforce their fanatical, fun-hating ways there as well.

In Asia and Africa, none have the strength or the resources to challenge Britannia - certainly not Qing China, now a decadent dynasty on its last legs, or the re-established Bourbon Monarchy in Algiers, which is a stalwart ally of Britannia. However, it was not long ago that the Afrikaners of the Trans-Tilly region were subdued, and many still harbor resentment toward the Imperial Union for the brutal and ruthless manner in which the British soldiers behaved during the Afrikaner Wars; they can prove to be a problem to imperial unity in these trying times, as can the Japanese ultranationalists, though seeing as their country was conquered by Britannia nearly two hundred years ago and many Japanese are (at least for now) content with British rule, they will prove to be a much less immediate threat than the aforementioned Afrikaners.

It is high noon for Britannia, but in these troubled days the Empire's cynics and enemies whisper that it won't be long before the sun sets on the Empire. Will you manage to keep the sun shining down on the Imperial Union? Or will you be the one to bring twilight over Britannia, unintentionally or not? Or maybe you will enter history as the man who actually brought Britannia closer to the sun than before, a feat thought impossible even now?

Theoretically, following the cognatic primogeniture succession law of Britannia, her descendants would be in a better place to claim the throne than the incumbent Emperor or his descendants, though it may not be the best of ideas to speak about that too loudly...

Default Re: Rule Britannia - the 1911 Alternate History IH

    Character Rules:

This is the big one. Character format should now look like this:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Name:
    Age:
(keep this updated every turn BTW)
Class: (Not social class, but whether you are playing as Politician, General/Admiral/Air Marshal or Diplomat)
Noble titles: (only if you have them and you're not a Terrorist)
    Ethnicity:
    Religion:
    Social background:
    Biography:

    Political beliefs:
    (will be outlined shortly)

Money: (Keep track of this, a lot. I cannot stress the importance of making sure your bank account is up to date in this game, where personal funds will be extremely important)

However, your Ethnicity, Religion and Social Background will all play a major role in shaping both your character and his future; they will determine your likeliest supporters and enemies, as well as the beliefs he should support if you want to stay in-character (which you should ).

    Ethnic backgrounds and their effects:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The following can be used by any player, regardless of where they are starting:

English: You are either an Englishman born & bred in the Home Isles, or the descendants of English colonists in one of the Union's many far-flung outposts and domains. Along with the other Home Nations, you are the foundation of the Imperial Union - without you, there can be no Britannia. In fact, you make up the majority of the population of the Home Isles, Canada and Australia. The English are sociopolitically the most versatile of the Empire's people, and thus you can come from pretty much any social background and take on any political position you want.

Irish: You are either an Irishman born & bred on the Emerald Isle, or the descendants of Irish colonists in one of the Union's many far-flung outposts and domains. Your ancestors were some of King (and later Emperor) Charles's most stalwart supporters, having benefited greatly from his rule, and you are almost certainly no different. The Irish are also known as the Imperial Union's most fervent Catholics, and though generally not as militant as the Puritans who loathe them (and who they despise in return), like your countrymen you have no problems with standing up and loudly defending your faith. Most Irish are still rural and conservative folk with strong Unionist beliefs like their ancestors.

Highland Scots: You are either a Highlander born & bred in Northern Scotland, or the descendants of the many Highlander soldiers stationed as colonial garrisons in the Empire's early days. Like the Irish, your ancestors benefited tremendously from Emperor Charles's rule, and the Highlands still retain a great degree of autonomy today; in turn, you are likely to be strong supporters of the Union and of the Emperor. Most Highlanders are either Catholic or High Church Protestant (specifically, Scottish Episcopalian) and come from military families - as mentioned before, they usually made up the first colonial garrisons in a newly-claimed territory, or if they remained in the Home Isles they had a tendency to be deployed as front-line shock troops.

Lowland Scots: You are either a Lowlander born & bred in Southern Scotland, or the descendants of the many Lowlanders who fled to the colonies to escape religious persecution and Anglo-Highlander tyranny back home following the English Civil Wars. The Lowlanders are generally much less supportive of the Crown than the rest of the Home Isles, and for good reason - due to their constant resistance against King/Emperor Charles I, your people have been locked out of administrative positions, faced heavy discrimination toward their Low Church Protestant (specifically, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland) and generally treated as the black sheep of the Home Isles. Official discrimination ended only in 1900, and the wounds they have left have not even begun to heal. You are likely to be a Low Church Protestant and of a poor background thanks to nearly three centuries of repression and government-sanctioned discrimination, and still deeply resent the English and Scots-Irish.

Welsh: You are of Welsh ancestry, and either was born & bred in Cymru or was born/migrated overseas to one of Britannia's many colonies. Your people were and still are the butt of many jokes involving sheep, but you've never forgotten the fact that you are the closest of all the British peoples to the earliest Britons - something you and your people have held with pride, even after nearly 700 years of English subjugation - and many Welshmen dream of the day that they take their place in the sun as a valued and properly respected member of the Imperial Union (which would also hopefully put an end to those irritating sheep-shagger jokes). Your are likely to have come from middle-class or poor rural origins and follow the Catholic or either High/Low Church Protestantism (almost certainly the Methodist Church).

    For Canadians only:

Old Loyalist: Your ancestors were among the earliest settlers of British America, but were driven out for their faith or allegiance to the Emperor after the Columbians gained their independence and began a reign of terror down south. Many Loyalists took part in the conquest of Canada, and were generously rewarded for their service with large fiefs of land and small fortunes from the Imperial treasury (or from the spoils of battle), making them the oldest 'native-born' nobility of Canada. Today, their descendants still harbor great bitterness toward the Puritans and tend to look down on the Quebecois (who they subjugated, after all) and the so-called 'New English' (newer waves of settlers from Europe) who don't have the distinction of fighting the Columbians over the past 300 years. Loyalists are, pretty much without exception, Catholic or High Church Protestant, either extremely affluent aristocrats or military officers (or both, making them true 'noblesse d'épée') and hold strong Unionist beliefs.

Franco-Canadian: Your ancestors were French settlers in Quebec, who were subjugated by Britannia in the aftermath of the War of the Spanish Succession. Politically, your people have often been caught between a rock and a hard place - on one hand the 'Anglos' are resented for their economic and political dominance in Canada, on the other they fear and hate the Columbian fanatics to the south even more. The general consensus is that the British are the lesser of two evils, though that in no way means that the Quebecois should not seek greater autonomy in the Union. The Quebecois are sociopolitically quite versatile - there have been many cases of Franco-Canadians ascending to the upper circles of Imperial Canadian society - but generally hold Autonomist or (less likely, due to the Columbian threat) Nationalist beliefs.

Other European-Canadian: Your ancestors were likely not even born in Canada; you are one of many non-British immigrants invited to settle the Canadian West, roped in by promises of free land and some start-up funds, and can come from pretty much anywhere in Europe - Germany, Italy, Russia, the Balkans, you name it. You lack the wealth and historical prestige of the Loyalists, but what do those sneering old duffers know anyway? And you may not be as well-established as the Quebecois or British settlers in the east, but who cares what they think when you have crops to raise, tracks to lay down and shady Columbians to watch out for in the West? Most European-Canadians are yeoman farmers who, while not rich, aren't dirt-poor either, can hold any Christian religious belief and are generally either Unionists or Autonomists.

Métis: You are descended from the union of Europeans and Native Americans, and probably live in what is now Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Despite traditionally enjoying considerable autonomy (mostly because the Eastern Establishment in Ontario and Quebec were too busy trying to defend themselves from the Columbians) you witnessed your rights being trampled upon, your land bought up at unfair prices and appropriated to more settlers from across the Atlantic and your people forced further north or conscripted to serve as border guards, and things only got worse in the aftermath of the failed Northwest Rebellion. The Métis generally come from poor backgrounds, usually having been conscripted as frontiersmen or soldiers, and resent British rule, falling under the category of Nationalists.

    For Oceanians only:

Convict: Your ancestors were convincts dumped on the Land Down Under by a government unwilling to look after them, and ranged from mere pickpockets and conmen to heretics and political dissidents to serial killers. Ironically, many of these convicts would go on to become the de facto aristocracy of Australia and later, Oceania, receiving land grants and funds for exploration & settlement after reforming (whether sincerely or not) and have adopted the trappings of the British upper class. Today, the descendants of the Convicts are almost without exception urban nobles and, unlike many other British aristocrats, they are usually Low Church Protestants (many of them are descendants of Lowland Scots whose only crime was making fun of the English one too many times or practicing their faith too openly) who, using their money and social position, led the movement to end discrimination against their coreligionists. The majority of these 'rags-to-riches' families have remembered their ancestors' disgraceful arrival, and generally hold Autonomist or Nationalist views.

Gold Rusher: Your ancestors came to Oceania when word of gold down under started spreading, and may or may not have succeeded in striking the motherlode and becoming filthy rich. Many Gold Rushers still carry the bitter memory of the Eureka Rebellion, which their grandfathers possibly participated in, and harbor resentment toward the Imperial administration and their local representatives, the now-aristocratic descendants of the Convicts and Squatters. Gold Rushers and their descendants can hold any Christian belief and come from any background - a lucky few actually struck gold and become aristocrats thanks to their newfound wealth, others pulled themselves up by the bootstraps after the Rush ended, and still others were left too poor to buy a ticket back home - and can hold any political views, usually Autonomism or even outright Nationalism.

Squatter: Your ancestors illegally occupied Crown Territory and started farming and herding operations there, eventually becoming rich enough to buy the rights to the land and later forming the rural counterpart to the Convicts-turned-aristocrats who dominated urban Oceania. Many Squatters went on to build massive rural plantations surrounded by irrigated farms or livestock 'stations' and worked by dozens or even hundreds of indentured workers and Aboriginals. In contrast to the Convicts, most Squatters are rural, well-off Catholics or High Church Protestants with firm Unionist beliefs.

    For Indians only:

Anglo-Indian: You were born to British parents in India. Closer to the Indians than their distant cousins back home, the Anglo-Indians form the cream of the new Indian aristocracy and colonial administration, occupying all high offices and serving as the colonial middlemen between the distant London government and the people back in their true homes, India. They get along well enough with most Indians, who after all are their biggest partners and underlings. Anglo-Indians are a socially versatile class and can come from any background, follow any Christian creed and hold Unionist or Autonomist beliefs.

Indian: Your ancestors witnessed the arrival of the British, but held on to their identity in the face of British bayonets and missionaries. The Indians have traditionally labored hard for chump change (or even less) under the British, but following the Sepoy Rebellion gained some measure of representation in the Imperial government, sending their first MPs to London in 1909 despite the best efforts of the British colonial administration, and now seek to overcome further discrimination. Indians (politically active ones, anyway) can come from any background save the aristocratic ones, hold any faith (Christian, Muslim or Hindu) tend to hold Autonomist beliefs.

    For Japanese only:

Anglo-Japanese: You are descended from British settlers who married into the Japanese population, usually either the old Japanese courtly aristocracy or (for those who weren't from British noble families) the 'Hidden Christians. The Anglo-Japanese have traditionally formed the colonial administration following the Conquest of Japan in the 18th century, acting as middlemen for the distant Imperial administration in London and providing the ethnic Japanese under them with a degree of autonomy. They are generally Catholics from wealthy, if not aristocratic, or at least middle-class backgrounds, and hold firm Unionist or at least moderate Autonomist beliefs.

Japanese: Your venerable ancestors witnessed and quite likely tried to fight the British gaijin as they invaded Japan, but were ultimately defeated and subjugated - and that's you can no longer call them 'gaijin' to their face without facing a prison sentence. The lot of the Japanese has steadily improved under the administration of the Anglo-Japanese 'new aristocracy', and after two hundred years most Japanese have now at least partially adapted to Western ways. They can come from any but the aristocratic social backgrounds, are generally either Christian (any creed), Buddhist or Shinto, and usually hold either Unionist or Autonomist views, though a radical minority yearning for the days of the old Japanese Empire (and ignoring the danger poised by Russia from Hokkaido) are Nationalists.

    For Africans only:

Afrikaner: Your ancestors were the German settlers of the Austrian and later Imperial Cape Colony before it was sold to the British. After the sale, many Afrikaners (descended from refugees of the Great German War, including a large number of Protestants who tried to escape persecution back home) initially tried to work with the British authorities, but following wave after wave of British settlers who received favorable treatment, packed up and left for the interior, where they established a number of 'Freistaaten' (independent republics). Their relatively short-lived Freistaaten were destroyed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the British army despite their best efforts to keep the 'Afrikaner Dream' alive, and today many Afrikaners still deeply resent the colonial establishment for the atrocities visited upon them during the First and Second Afrikaner Wars. They can come from any non-aristocratic background, are generally Protestants and hold Autonomist or Nationalist views.

Uitlander: Your ancestors were British settlers who decided to live in the Cape Colony following its purchase by the Imperial government. You were among the many Uitlanders who jumped at the Motherland's call in the Afrikaner wars, and actively supported Britannia as the redcoats (and later, khaki-coats) marched past the Tilly River. Following the war, you maneuvered yourself into a well-paying job in the new colonial administration. You can come from any non-aristocratic background, are probably a Catholic or High Church Protestant, and hold either Unionist or Autonomist views.

Egyptian: Your ancestors (or maybe even you yourself, if you were old enough) saw your country subjugated by the British while your supposed Ottoman protectors did nothing. Egypt is still nominally independent and under the rule of a Khedive from the Muhammad Ali dynasty, but this is quite obviously a transparent attempt by the British to project an illusion of independence - The Emperors of Britannia have added 'King of Egypt' to their list of titles, all the important government offices were staffed by British aristocrats and officers until recently, and Egypt still has to send MPs to London like any other colony of Britannia's. Egyptians come from all social backgrounds, are generally Muslims or more rarely Copts (who however usually receive favorable treatment from the British), and can hold any political views: some Egyptians prefer integration into the Imperial Union as the way forward, others desire actual autonomy and still others want total independence.

    The available religious backgrounds:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Catholic - You are part of the Roman Catholic Church or other Churches in full communion with the See of Rome (Eastern, Maronite, Chaldean Catholic etc.). This church is the dominant and state religion of the Imperial Union.

Orthodox - You are part of the Eastern Orthodox (officially Orthodox Catholic) Church, and more specifically one of its autocephalous churches - Constantinople, Greek (Athens), Russian, etc.

High Church Protestant - You are part of one of the Protestant Churches that place an emphasis on formality and resist 'modernization' efforts, ex. the Scottish Episcopal Church.

    Low Church Protestant
    - You are part of one of the Protestant Churches that show a more Evangelical than formal feel and are generally more open to reform, ex. the Church of Scotland or 'Kirk'.

Other Christian - You are part of another Christian denomination not mentioned up there, ex. the Coptic Church, or are simply non-denominational.

Sunni Muslim - You are a member of the Sunni branch of Islam, following the Sunnah - Muhammad's hadiths.

    Shi'a Muslim
    - You are a member of the Shi'a branch of Islam, believing that only Allah can appoint representatives of Islam and thus not recognizing any authority elected by mere mortals.

    Judaism
    - You are a Jew, a practiotiner of the oldest of the Abrahamic faiths. You may belong to the Orthodox. Conservative or Reform traditions.

Hindu - You are a Hindu, a follower of one or more among numerous Indian deities with multiple traditions to draw on from.

Other - You are a follower of a religion not mentioned here, ex. Buddhism, Druze, Shinto.

    And the available social backgrounds:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The following can be used by any player regardless of his location in the IU:

Rural aristocrat: You are the 'old money', a landowning gentleman with a fortune behind his name (and quite possibly one or more fancy titles) who lives out in the country and plays an active part in administering his large farms, plantations and ranches. You hold conservative views and try to live the 'Cavalier Ideals' of Faith, Honor and Valor - which, in public satire, translate to politicized Catholicism, Unionist political beliefs and an eagerness to buy an officer's commission whenever a war breaks out - but try to emphasize rural interests while you're at it.

    Urban aristocrat:
You are also 'old money', and while you probably no longer own a massive tract of land like the Rural Aristocrats, you have likely dipped your hands into the business world and serve as the center of the British social scene, bringing glamour and good fun to meetings and social activities instead of being boarded up in an office managing stacks of paperwork like your stuffy rural counterparts. You also hold conservative views and try to live the Cavalier Ideals, but will advocate urban interests over those of the countryside.

Business magnate: You are 'new money'. You managed to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and rise from the gray masses into an elite circle of the country's wealthiest men, and you take great pride in the fact that you did all of this largely on your own instead of inheriting money and estates from someone else without actually doing anything to earn it. You may try to live the Cavalier Ideals, but hold the aristocracy in contempt as a bunch of inbred, doddering old fools who have never done an honest day's work in their lives (and they, in turn, see you as an arrogant upstart who lucked out) and lean toward classical liberalism and pro-business policies.

    Clergyman:
You are a member of the clergy. You can be a Catholic bishop, Protestant preacher, Muslim imam, Hindu brahmin, etc. but one thing about your position is that it means people listen to you. You hold a traditionally deeply respected position in the social order, and in the case of Catholic clergy you actually get quite a bit of money off the government tab. Naturally, once you enter politics you will almost certainly hold fiercely conservative, if not outright reactionary views, and will try to put the creed you belong to into the political limelight (or, in the case of Catholics, keep it there).

Soldier: You are a military man, though your experience can range from several battle honors won for 'unsurpassed valor' and other such things in the Afrikaner and Mahdist Wars to almost blowing your own foot off in boot camp and occasionally making rude gestures toward Puritans on the Canadian-Columbian border. Regardless, joining the military one way or another is one of the fastest tracks into politics, as even a few years of experience carries with it a certain respect in Imperial society. You will likely try to prioritize the military over everyone else's interests.

Factory worker: You've worked twelve-to-eighteen hour days in filthy factories for what amounts to chump change, or even less if your boss was particularly nasty, and were forced to endure torrents of abuse from your employers without ever retaliating out of fear that you'd be kicked to the curb and left to starve. However, the emergence of the French Commune has brought hope to the politically active members of the proletariat like you, and you decided to enter politics with the ultimate objective of easing the suffering of your fellow workers.

Peasant: You are a rural laborer, possibly bound to a noble's land not by serfdom but by lack of money with which to feed your family, forcing you to work the fields for many hours under the sun, rain and snow. Nevertheless, you and your fellow peasants just grin and bear it, seeing your hard labor as your duty in the social hierarchy. Peasants like you tend to be much more conservative than urban factory workers; the ideal peasant is one who obeys his lord unquestioningly, does whatever is needed of him to keep the women and children well fed, actively attends church and pays the proper respects to Emperor - and this is an ideal you and your fellow country folk do their best to live up to.

The following are for Canadians only:

Refugee: You are a recent arrival from Columbia, having eluded State Security agents and border patrols on a desperate trek up north so you would be able to practice your religion and speak your mind (relatively) freely without the fear of being taken to a 'house of happiness' or simply shot in your sleep. Naturally, you hate Columbia and all that it stands for, and once you get your hands on some power your fellow refugees will expect you to push for a war to destroy that abomination of a state; all other political issues come in second after that. You are distinct from the Loyalists in that while they are descendants of the original Loyalists who fled to Canada in the 17th century and are now Canada's established upper class, you are a newcomer to the 'True North' and may or may not be wealthy depending on your financial position in Columbia before your flight and how much money you managed to take with you.

Homesteader: You are a yeoman farmer, owning and living on a small but prosperous farm out west on the Prairie. You are the other liberal ideal, besides the Business Magnate - a hard-working, independent fellow who, through sheer force of will and hard labor, made something of himself, as opposed to the greedy leeches up above and down below you in the social ladder. You are likely to advocate rural interests before urban ones and harbor liberal views.

The following are for Oceanians only:

Ex-Bushranger: You were once an outlaw in the wilds of Oceania, attacking trains and banks with impunity and getting into shootouts with the police. However, for one reason or another - perhaps you were finally captured, perhaps you had an epiphany of some sort and decided that you were wasting your life away, or perhaps out of the realization that you could accomplish so much more if you had some real power - you left behind your life of crime and became an upstanding (well, at least publicly...) citizen. You tend to favor socialist or liberal politics, they are after all the kind of people who would have taken mercy on you if you were still a Bushranger...

Grazer: You are a 'grazer', the Oceanian equivalent to wealthy ranchers in the Canadian or Columbian West. Your family owns a large ranch called a 'station' (possibly on a previously-uninhabited piece of land that they 'squatted' on) and have grown wealthy from the business, as ranchers provide a considerable part of Oceania's exports to the rest of the Imperial Union and the world. You have likely led a comfortable life out in the country manor and are a representative of conservative, rural politics.

The following are for Japanese only:

Kuge: You are part of the new nobility of Japan, an honor your family has held since your distant ancestors made the pragmatic (and quite wise) decision to collaborate with and possibly marry into the incoming British elite. You live like the best of British aristocrats and serve as colonial middlemen between London and Japan proper, making sure your citizens are kept well-fed and happy to reduce any risk of rebellion against your true Emperor in London. You have a tendency of looking down on the Ultranationalists, who your class consider a bunch of crazed romanticists with no grounding in reality, and holding conservative or moderate views.

Ultranationalist: Your ancestors were once members of Japan's military aristocracy, only to see themselves left destitute and a bunch of treasonous pigs take their place by marrying into gaijin families and appeasing the false Emperor in London. Having restored yourself to a stable financial and social position, you now take every opportunity available to preach against the evils of the imperialist British and their puppets, the Anglo-Japanese 'kuge' - at least as long as it takes for you to recover your old family fortunes & estates. You are likely to be a fervent Nationalist and to push for Japanese independence at every turn, and all other politics come in second place after that major issue.

The following are for Indians only:

Colonial enforcer: You are, or at least were, once part of the Imperial Indian Police Department and helped enforce British colonial rule on the subcontinent, shooting or hanging rebels and locking up particularly vocal independence activists. While resented by many Indians for your bloody work, your exemplary service record and loyalty to the Empire is lauded by the Anglo-Indian elite, and elements of said elite have offered to help propel you into the realm of politics. You tend to hold pro-British views above all else.

Activist: You are one of many Indians who have turned to peaceful methods to try and liberate your country from the British yoke, or at least get it reorganized into an independent dominion, once it became clear that the British military machine could not be overcome in battle. You have faced heavy pressure from the Imperial Indian Police and possibly even got yourself landed in jail several times, but your perseverance has won over the hearts of many Indians who now proudly march alongside you every time you enter the street to call for autonomy/independence. You hold pro-autonomy/independence views above all else.

The following are for Africans only:

Ex-resistance fighter: You once fought valiantly to defend your family, your ideals and your way of life from British imperialism, but it was all in vain as the Afrikaner Freistaats fell one by one in the face of the Imperial war machine, and you yourself may have been captured and deported to an 'internment camp' where you were held without trial or any hope of escape for years. Now that you are a free man in a not-so-free country and it has become clear that the British cannot be overcome militarily, you have decided to work for independence or at least autonomy through peaceful channels. You hold pro-autonomy/independence views above all else. Available only to Afrikaners.

Collaborator: When the British swept into the Afrikaner Freistaaten, you saw the writing on the wall and figured that if you can't beat the British, you ought to join them - or maybe you were an Uitlander who jumped at the chance to fight for the Motherland. Either way, following the fall of the last Freistaaten, your gambit paid off, securing you an office with a nice salary attached in the Greater Rhodesia colonial administration. In the case of Afrikaners, your fellow intelligent comrades have (sometimes unfairly, sometimes...not) been caricatured as cowardly, selfish and manipulative backstabbers who sold out their own people to a foreign conqueror in exchange for rewards, and you may or may not fit that stereotype...obviously, you will hold Unionist or at least Autonomist views above all. Available to Afrikaners and Uitlanders only.

Ex-Pasha: You were once an officer in the Egyptian Army, but after your country's ignominious defeat at the hands of Britannia you were left out of a job, until one lucky day you were offered another commission - this time in the very army you were shooting at only a few years ago. British rule doesn't seem that bad to a man with power such as yourself, and you have decided to abandon any nationalist pipe-dreams in favor of serving the highest bidder - er, Britannia. For the good of the Egyptian people and totally not your checkbook at all, of course. You hold pro-British views above all else. Available only to Egyptians.

    (Legal) Political Rules:

    Party format:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Name: Self-explanatory.
    Leader: Also self-explanatory.
Official colors: Think the Democrats' blue and the Republicans' red. Not mandatory though.
Nickname: If you want one. (BTW, try not to pick a name that lets your opponents make a funny nickname for you at your expense (ex. Conservative Reform Alliance Party-->CRAP )
Ideology: Something not too general, please and thank you. (ex. 'progressive conservatism' or 'national conservatism' instead of just 'conservatism', 'classical liberalism' or 'social liberalism' instead of just 'liberalism')
Political Positions: Base these on the major issues.
Description: Just a description of the party and what it stands for. Again, not looking for a novel here, but don't give me a trashy pamphlet either.

Major political issues at the moment:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Imperial Politics - Are you a Unionist, a man who believes that the Imperial Union should be held together? An Autonomist, who believes the IU should be devolved into a commonwealth of autonomous Dominions serving the same Emperor? Or a Nationalist, who wants to secede from the Union entirely?
    Taxation - Self-explanatory.
Military - Should we work to keep the Imperial Armed Forces at the top of their game? Or is this a good time for a break in funding? Or maybe a pacifist approach should be followed?
The Economy & Trade - Should free-market principles be followed? Or is a protectionist approach in order? Should rural interests be prioritized over commercial and industrial interests, or should it be the other way around?
Foreign Policy - Should Britannia align with the Holy Roman Empire or with Russia against the other? Or should it try to remain neutral? However, negotiations with Columbia are impossible, and a confrontation with the Puritan zealots south of Canada seems inevitable...
Immigration - Should we welcome all who pass through our borders in search of better fortunes? Or limit immigration to protect local business and the like?
Disestablishment - Should we work to remove the Catholic Church's standing as official state religion? If so, is it to keep Britannia a secular state or to place another religion in that place? Or is that a fool's errand? Or, perhaps, we should further empower it instead?
Prohibition - Is alcohol an evil we must get rid of, or would such a course of action be...less than successful in practice?
Women's Suffrage - Should women get the right to vote? Or should they stay in the kitchen and make the men sandwiches?

Politics have been revamped in this game as well. At the start of the game, you may pick any British province (in red) on the map as your Home Riding; mark it clearly on the map. You will always be guaranteed a seat in this game if you decide to play as a politician. Your Home Riding will contribute a set amount of money to your Party Treasury at the start of every year (weekly turn); all HRs start contributing 5,000 pounds. Upon the end of an election, each Riding you take contributes an extra 5,000 at the start of every turn.

Your Home Riding will also contribute 2,500 pounds sterling every turn to your Personal Funds, and all other ridings you win in an election will donate 1,000 pounds a turn to your Personal Funds as well.

While election campaigns are still three days long, you will no longer be able to spam posters and speeches willy-nilly, instead, they will take a toll on your Party Treasury. Every poster costs 3,000; every speech costs 5,000 but will have a greater effect than your Posters, unless you really botch it.

Besides elections, another way to get more money into the Party Treasury will be to ask for donations from social classes, lobbyists, religions, even the Imperial House of Stuart if you think your conduct has been pleasing. You can ask for donations once every three days. You can ask groups to donate straight to your Personal Funds instead of the Party Treasury.

There are three social classes, on whose support you will have to rely on to get elected:

-The Poor. 20% of the IU's population. They are ideologically split between liberal and socialist/Marxist urban poor and the conservative rural poor. They contribute the least money in donations. Easy to please, but quick to anger as well, and when you won't like the mob when they get angry...

-The Middle Class. 75% of the IU's population. They are politically neutral at first but are the easiest class to sway with propaganda. They contribute a decent amount of money in donations. They aren't as easy to please or anger as the poor, but still easier to appease than the Upper Class, and are the slowest to anger.

-The Upper Class. 5% of the IU's population. They are either aristocrats who own and manage vast tracts of land, or 'nouveau riche' types who worked their way up into corporate management positions. They contribute the most money in donations. The hardest class to please; the nobles are solidly conservative and in many cases reactionary, while the big businessmen tend to be liberal but always favor pro-business policies, and at times their interests can even collide with each other. They are moderately slow to anger, and tend to make their displeasure known not by staging revolts, but by hiring hitmen to take out their rivals instead...

Besides watching out for social classes, you will also have to work to keep as many ethnicities and religious believers appeased as well.

Lastly, expect to be hounded by Lobbyists. These interest groups will offer you money to get their agenda (ranging from tax raises/drops to declaring war against someone for whatever reason) passed; if you refuse, they may or may not talk to you again. However, don't think about trying to double-cross them by taking the money and then not advocating their agenda, or even worse trying to work against it - they will run attack ads against you in every election like a rabid dog (played by me, of course) and fund your opponents if you try that.

The Imperial government is split into three Houses:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
House of Lords: Consists of Lords Spiritual (religious leaders) and Lords Temporal (nobles). Nobody can start in this House. You get here by securing a noble title. They have veto power over the House of Commons and Grand Colonial Assembly, though only over foreign policy matters or domestic matters relating to the Church, and a two-thirds vote in the HoC or GCA (depending on where the vetoed bill is coming from) can overturn the veto. The Lords cannot actually propose or vote on anything else, though. 500 seats. Rural and Urban Aristocrats can start here automatically, since they begin with a Baronetcy.

House of Commons: For all MPs from the Home Isles (England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales). The party with the most seats here, or at least a coalition, forms His/Her Majesty's Government. 650 members.

Grand Colonial Assembly: For all MPs from the Colonies (anywhere outside the Home Isles). Split up for the various Colonies:
    -Canada has 300 seats.
-Oceania (Australia & NZ) has 300 seats.
    -India has 300 seats.
    -Japan has 200 seats.
    -Africa has 80 seats.
    -The Caribbean has 20 seats.
The colonial party with the most seats forms that colony's Government. 1,200 members total.

You can also build the following Developments in your Home Riding to increase support levels and/or monetary input:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Political Machine: A patronage system designed to reward party supporters while pulling in donations and votes, managed by a party 'boss'. +3,000, costs 5,000 and 4 days to set up.

Rural Development: New farms, irrigation systems, windmills, etc. Endears you to the rural populace but makes the urban dwellers feel neglected. +1,500, costs 2,000 and takes 3 days to set up, increases nationwide Rural support at the expense of Urban support. May be built as many times as you want.

Urban development: New hospitals, sewers, paved roads, etc. Endears you to the urban populace but makes the rural dwellers feel neglected. +2,000, costs 3,000 and takes 3 days to set up, increases nationwide Urban support at the expense of Rural support.

Church: A nice new church for the religious denomination of your choice. Endears you to that particular religion, and is bound to get your party donations when needed. +2,000, costs 3,500 and takes 3 days to set up, increases support from a particular religion at the expense of others. May be built as many times as you want.

Generic infrastructure: Railroads, roads, etc. that would service the entire province. +2,000, costs 4,000 and takes 3 days to set up, pleases and angers nobody.

You can also become a Nobleman. If you think you've done a good enough job in Parliament (winning wars, overseeing a period of economic growth, negotiating diplomatic crises, etc.) you can ask the Emperor for an Ennoblement, and if he agrees you now have a fancy title and the ability to swap your seat in the Commons/Assembly for one in the Lords - or maybe he'll be generous enough to offer you one without asking. You can ask for more promotions in the future, or otherwise get a promotion from the Emperor without asking if he thinks you're doing a bang-up job. As becoming a Noble brings with it estates and a pension, you will get more money directed to your Personal Funds every turn. The noble ranks are:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Duke: The highest rank in the aristocracy. +25,000 to Personal Funds/turn.

Marquess: The second-highest rank in the aristocracy. +20,000 to Personal Funds/turn.

Earl: The third-highest rank in the aristocracy. +15,000 to Personal Funds/turn.

Count: The fourth-highest rank in the aristocracy. +10,000 to Personal Funds/turn.

Viscount: The fifth-highest rank in the aristocracy. +5,000 to Personal Funds/turn.

Baron: The second-lowest rank in the aristocracy. +2,500 to Personal Funds/turn.

Baronet: The absolute lowest rank in the aristocracy. +1,500 to Personal Funds/turn. All Urban and Rural Aristocrats, (for Canadians) Old Loyalists and (for Japanese) Kuge who don't become Terrorists start with this title.

Hereditary Knighthood: A rank outside the traditional noble structure, you get to keep this one - and its bonuses - even as you rise up the social hierarchy, unlike conventional ranks (Baronet-->Duke) which are successively replaced by the title above them. For example, if you were a Baron and ascended to the rank of Viscount, you lose the bonus attached to the Baron title but keep the bonus provided by the HK. +1,000 to Personal Funds/turn.

BTW, every step you take in the aristocratic hierarchy will help your relations with the Upper Class but weaken relations with the Poor and, to a much smaller extent, the Middle Class.

Lastly, you can be inducted into one of the various chivalric orders of the Empire for good deeds done in the name of God and Country (again, things like winning wars). Unlike noble titles, which add to your turnly personal income, Chivalric Orders give you a considerable one-time monetary bonus, and you can belong to more than one order at a time. Also, you get to add a cool title to your character's name
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Order of the Garter - The oldest and some dare say the most prestigious chivalric order in the British Isles, founded in 1348 by King Edward III of England. Bonus of 20,000 florins + you can add KG to your name.

Order of the Thistle - The second-oldest chivalric order in the Isles, founded in 1687 by Emperor Charles III and using the Scottish Thistle as its symbol. Bonus of 18,000 florins + you can add KT to your name.

Order of Saint Patrick - The third-oldest order in the Isles, founded in 1689 by Emperor Charles III to honor his steadfast Irish supporters, who proved instrumental in derailing Parliament's plot to replace him with William of Orange. Bonus of 15,000 florins + you can add KP to your name.

Order of the Bath - The third-oldest order in the British Isles, founded in 1725 by Emperor James and named after the bathing ritual traditional knights had to undergo. Bonus of 12,500 florins + you can add CB to your name.

Order of Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel - The fourth-oldest order in the British Isles, founded in 1800 by Emperor Edward I, named after the Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Bonus of 10,000 florins + you can add CMG to your name.

Imperial Edwardian Order - Founded in 1902 by Emperor Robert in honor of his grandfather and predecessor Edward II, who was assassinated before his eyes only a few months before. Bonus of 8,500 florins + you can add MEO to your name.

Order of Merit - Founded in 1902 by Emperor Robert to honor the great men and women of the Empire. Bonus of 6,000 florins + you can add OM to your name.

    (Illegal) Political Rules:

Not about to play fair? Feeling oppressed for some reason or other? Have no fear, you can start either a terrorist freedom-fighters' organization!

Unlike Nationalist politicians who work to secede from the Union through legal means, a Terrorist Organization can use the following less-than-legal means to accomplish their goals (political reform, secession, etc):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Bank Robbery - Rob some banks. This doesn't actually advance your cause, but will be the only way to raise money considering that the government probably won't be too happy with any leaflet fundraising campaigns for enemies of the state. Requires Footmen.

Bombing Campaign - Stick bombs in public places, mailboxes, government offices etc. to strike terror into the hearts of the oppressors and inflict a variable number of casualties, to be determined by dice roll. Requires Footmen.

Propaganda Campaign - Try to build support for a future armed insurrection against the government. A successful propaganda campaign gets you money and better chances of receiving better units when you start an armed revolt. Requires Propagandist and at least 5,000 pounds sterling.

Assassination (NPC) - Try to assassinate an important NPC (governor, colonial administrator, police chief, maybe even the Emperor if you're feeling brave). This will be determined by dice roll. Requires Assassin, unless you're targeting a member of the Imperial Family, in which case you need Footmen (the more the merrier) and will have to play it out as though you're attacking a PC.

Assassination (PC) - Try to assassinate a player character. This will not be determined by dice roll; you will instead have to play out a battle with their guards ala a WEF 1960 assassination attempt. Requires at least one Assassin and Footmen, the more of the latter the better.

Launch armed revolt - Start an armed uprising against the government. You will attract a random number of soldiers, depending on how many successful propaganda campaigns you've launched. You can start one whenever you want, but failure means the destruction of your organization. No requirements.

You can recruit the following agents to aid your cause:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Footmen - 10/unit - cost: 3,000 - 2 days - Grunts who do most of your dirty work, required for almost all operations. Can fight under an Assassin in major assassination missions.

Assassin - cost: 8,000 - 3 days - Exactly what it says on the tin. A stealthy and highly dangerous individual who is required to even start an Assassination mission.

Propagandist - cost: 5,000 - 3 days - A charismatic orator required for Propaganda Campaigns.

However, the Government can counter with the following:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
ISPD Taskforce - 10/unit - cost: 3,000 - 2 days - Members of the elite Imperial Special Police Department, armed and dangerous agents of the Law who specialize in counter-terrorism.

SSB Special Agent - cost: 8,000 - 3 days - Counter-intelligence agents tasked with the silent removal of dissident leaders.

    Counter-propagandist - cost: 5,000 - 3 days - A charismatic pro-government preacher who can reduce support for terrorists.

    And what they can do:

Purge Area - Government counterpart of the Bombing Campaign. Requires ISPD Taskforce.

Counter-Propaganda Campaign - Government counterpart of the Propaganda Campaign, except it doesn't cost or make you money. Requires Counter-Propagandist.

Assassination (PC) - Try to assassinate a player character (well, terrorist leader). This will not be determined by dice roll; you will instead have to play out a battle with their guards ala a WEF 1960 assassination attempt. Requires at least one Assassin and Footmen, the more of the latter the better.

Launch crackdown - Government counterpart to the Launch Armed Revolt action. Somewhat like the Assassination action, only now you will be assaulting the Rebel Headquarters and instead of using actual soldiers, you will be deploying ISPD Taskforces and a maximum of two Special Agents; the terrorists can deploy a maximum of two Assassins and as many Footmen squads as they want. You will attract a random number of Vigilante squads (10 men each), depending on how many successful counter-propaganda campaigns you've launched. You can start one whenever you want, but failure means ta massive swell of support for the Terrorists. No requirements.

Alternatively, if you're a legal politician, you can use your personal funds (separate from Party Treasury) to do the following:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Buy votes - Exactly what it says on the tin. 2,000 pounds per 100 votes. The more votes you buy, the higher the risk of your operation getting busted.

Hire assassin - Send a message to your rivals via sniper rifle, poisoned tea, etc. The more money you invest into an assassin, the higher the chances of success become.

    Intermarriage into the Imperial Family

It is possible to marry into the House of Stuart, or at least marry one of your kids to a Stuart. Marrying into the dynasty will bring with it an automatic improvement in relations with the monarch and a promotion in the nobility, or if you aren't a noble yet, an automatic Baronetcy. Don't expect this to be easy, though - if you haven't done something awesome yet (like say winning a major battle, resolving a diplomatic crisis in a way that benefits Britannia, etc.) you might as well not even try.

If you wait too long, the Stuarts will get married off to someone else.

Lastly, if you're trying to construct an alliance with a foreign monarchy, you can suggest that a Stuart marry someone else from that country's dynasty. The monarch and the Stuart in question may refuse, of course.

Default Re: Rule Britannia - the 1911 Alternate History IH

    Battle Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
War will no longer play out like it did in previous IHs. I will now post a battle thread with a map and 'deployment zones'; you will be free to deploy your troops however you like, and to include a roleplaying element to combat, instead of sending in plans you will post orders for parts of your army (ex. 'Turenne's I Corps to Hougoumont, secure Hougoumont from the Spanish' (I'd prefer you mark your movements on the map as well).

You will have the opportunity to enter combat yourself, at which point instead of just ordering soldiers around, you'll get to do both that and personally fight enemy soldiers - and, if you're lucky, even the opposing general - like in DoM Quests or a duel to the death. Of course, your characters can die as well...and expect that to be happening a lot if you try this, considering we're now in the WW1 era

    Military Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
If you want to become a General, Admiral or Air Marshal, just ask Parliament or the Emperor (played by me) for a commission.

Generals, Admirals and Air Marshals are now paid by 'commission' in addition to a default salary of 3,000 pounds sterling/turn. Once you've won a battle, you can ask Parliament or even the Emperor himself for a bonus, although you should be reasonable in your demands, and whether or not your request is accepted depends on the importance of the battle you won; if it's just a minor skirmish action, it probably isn't a good idea to ask for a million-pound bonus.

Winning battles will naturally make you more popular, losing will disgrace your name and weaken your reputation, and of course there's the ever-present threat of your character coming down with a nasty case of death on the battlefield.

As usual, unit upkeep is 1/2 their original price.

    Land units:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Militia Division - 20,000 - 15,000 pounds sterling, 1 day - poorly trained, ill-equipped and undisciplined (but cheap and quick to raise) irregulars useful for little more than human wave attacks, police actions or home defense while the real soldiers are off on campaign.

Infantry Division - 10,000 - 30,000 pounds sterling, 3 days - the bread and butter of any army, well-trained and well-equipped professionals/semi-professional troops who can effectively take and secure ground.

Cavalry Division - 10,000 - 30,000 pounds sterling, 3 days - Speedy mounted troops who can still be useful for outmaneuvering enemies, rushing weak points in enemy lines and harassing supply lines, though the days of the famous frontal cavalry charges of old are done with.

Light Infantry Division - 8,000 - 50,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Lightly-equipped crack troops specially trained for rapid deployment and independent operations in rough terrain (ex. deserts, jungles).

Mountaineer Division - 8,000 - 55,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Crack troops specially trained and equipped for high-altitude, low-temperature operations.

Marine Division - 8,000 - 55,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Crack troops specially trained and equipped for amphibious operations.

Artillery Division - 3,000, 100 guns - 80,000 pounds sterling, 6 days - Heavy artillery useful on both the offensive and the defensive.

Armored Regiment - 5,000, 500 tanks - 145,000 pounds sterling, 1 week - Men driving 'land battleships' into battle, capable of overrunning all but the greatest of fortified lines and turning everyone who comes their way into something resembling chunky salsa. Must be researched first.

Recruitable brigades (to attach to divisions):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Artillery Brigade - 3,000, 40 guns - 25,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Mobile field artillery used primarily in support roles for offensive and defensive operations. Infantry (all types), Militia and Cavalry only.

Armored Brigade - 3,000, 250 tanks - 60,000 pounds sterling, 6 days - Small detachments of armored troops to help with punching holes in enemy lines. Infantry (all types), Militia and Cavalry only. Must be researched first.

Armored Car Brigade - 3,000, 600 armored cars - 40,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Detachments of speedy, lightly armored cars equipped with machine guns useful as support vehicles. Can be attached to all but Mountaineer and Marine Divisions.

Engineer Brigade - 3,000 men - 20,000 pounds sterling, 2 days - Trained combat engineers who can help construct pontoon bridges, trenches, crude bunkers etc. within short periods of times. On the offensive, they can mine an area and sabotage enemy defenses. Can be attached to all Divisions.

Armored Train Brigade - 3,000 men, 24 armored trains - 50,000 pounds sterling, 5 days - Massive, heavily armored trains that can quickly move troops and equipment along railways and function as mobile artillery platforms on the frontlines. Obviously, these brigades are restricted to railroads and will perform poorly (if at all) in low-infrastructure regions. Can be attached to any division.

Anti-Air Brigade - 3,000 men, 60 guns - 40,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Troops equipped with and specially trained in the use of anti-air guns, an increasingly important asset to have on your side as the role of aircraft grows on the battlefield.

Gas Brigade - 3,000 men - 35,000 pounds sterling, 3 days - Men specially trained in the use of various poison gases, ranging from the relatively harmless tear gas to the infamous mustard and chlorine gases, as well as in countering these chemical weapons. Can be attached to any unarmored division.

    Warships:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Battleship - 300,000 pounds sterling, 10 days - The ruler of the high seas, a floating fortress that can blow lesser ships out of the water with little effort...but are vulnerable to submarines.

Battlecruiser - 200,000 pounds sterling, 8 days - A larger, heavier cruiser with the arms of a battleship, the perfect blend of speed and firepower that can serve as support vessels for battleships or fight in their own right.

Cruiser - 120,000 pounds sterling, 6 days - Ships balancing the massive firepower and heavy armor of the Battleship and the speed and maneuverability of Destroyers, the mainstay of most surface fleets.

Destroyer - 80,000 pounds sterling, 5 days - Small, lightly armed ships mostly used as escorts or submarine hunters.

Submarine - 80,000 pounds sterling, 5 days - Watercraft capable of extended underwater operations, invaluable in crippling an opposing country's merchant shipping lines and combating Battleships.

Minelayer - 40,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Tiny, unarmed ships designed to litter an area with mines as quickly as possible.

Minesweeper - 40,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Tiny, unarmed ships meant to sweep an area clean of mines as quickly as possible.

    Aircraft:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Scout plane - 4 planes/squadron - 40,000 pounds sterling, 2 days - Fast, unarmed craft meant to collect intelligence on enemy movements and positions and report these findings to the troops on the ground.

One-seat fighter plane - 3 planes/squadron - 50,000 pounds sterling, 3 days - Planes armed with light machine guns and built specifically for high-speed dogfights, but also invaluable as escorts for Bombers and Airships.

Two-seat fighter plane - 2 planes/squadron - 75,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Heavier planes with two-man crews (a pilot and gunner) and heavier armaments specialized in extended, long-range dogfights.

Bomber - 2 planes/squadron - 75,000 pounds sterling, 4 days - Slow, heavy warplanes outfitted with large payloads of explosives, capable of raining death from above on both enemy military installations and cities but highly vulnerable to enemy fighters.

Airship - 2/squadron - 80,000 pounds sterling, 6 days - Massive rigid dirigibles that can both scout enemy positions and serve as heavy bombers, but are lacking in the air-to-air defense department and so will have to rely on Fighters to protect them.

When recruiting units, please group them into named armies or fleets - makes them much easier to track, and much easier on the eyes (well, at least mine) too

Lastly, you can now introduce conscription either in the Home Isles, one of the colonies or Empire-wide. Conscription spawns a number of free units (you can choose between Infantry, Cavalry and Militia) every day, but expect it to take a heavy toll on the popularity of whatever party pushed it through and to add to war exhaustion. The higher the level of conscription, the worse its side effects will be.

BTW, these units are free only in the sense that you don't have to pay for their recruitment, you still have to pay upkeep for them.

Level 1 conscription - Spawns 1 free division/territory with conscription.
Level 2 conscription - Spawns 3 free divisions/territory with conscription.
Level 3 conscription - Spawns 6 free divisions/territory with conscription.

    Economic rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Unlike previous IHs that relied on % economies, I've decided to go with something new this time around. Each province secured by the legions will contribute a set amount of florins every turn, which may increase or decrease due to certain random or not-so-random factors (ex. a beneficial 'good harvest' event or rebels rampaging throughout the province). Provinces occupied by an enemy force will not contribute a single florin to your treasury.

Please check the economic map to discover how much each province makes.

    Level 1 - Red: 25,000 florins/turn
    Level 2 - Blue: 50,000 florins/turn
    Level 3 - Light Green: 100,000 florins/turn
    Level 4 - Dark Green: 150,000 florins/turn

You can upgrade a province's infrastructure level for a set amount of florins.

    Level 1 to Level 2: 30,000 florins - 1 turn
    Level 2 to Level 3: 60,000 florins - 3 turns
    Level 3 to Level 4: 120,000 florins - 6 turns

You may sign mutually beneficial trade agreements with other factions. Both factions will make money off of these agreements. There are five levels of trade agreements you may sign:

    Level 1 - 15,000 florins
    Level 2 - 30,000 florins
    Level 3 - 60,000 florins
    Level 4 - 120,000 florins
    Level 5 - 240,000 florins

However, note that you may only have three trade agreements at any time, and in addition breaking a trade agreement will have negative effects depending on the level of the agreement; breaking a Level 1 agreement will just result in you losing some money, while breaking a Level 5 one may lead to large-scale economic collapse. Thus, choose your trading partners wisely - this is as much a matter of trust as it is one of making money.

    Intelligence Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Once a Director of BOSS has been appointed and his annual budget granted by Parliament, he may immediately undertake intelligence operations against enemies of the realm. To do so, he will need to recruit:

Agent - 5,000 pounds sterling - 2 days - Highly trained spies who are an absolute must for any intelligence organization. Needed for pretty much everything.

Black Ops Squad - 7,500 pounds sterling - 3 days - Highly trained and heavily-armed soldiers who take care of the more violent side of intelligence operations.

Actions that the Director of BOSS may take:

Steal military plans - Reveals at least one enemy army, where they're headed and their battle plan. Watch out for disinformation campaigns, though. Requires Agent, costs 4000 florins.

Steal research - Reduces the amount of money needed to finish researching a technology. Requires Agent, costs 4000 florins.

Spread disinformation - Feed false information to the enemy, opening up weak spots in their defenses as they move their forces away to counter imaginary threats. Requires Agent, costs 5000 florins.

Create partisan organization - In an area where there is no organized rebel group yet, whip the locals into a furor and lay the roots for a rebel group of your liking. Requires agent, costs 20000 florins.

Fund partisan organization - Financially support some local rebel groups, who will then occasionally give you information for free, launch raids on enemy supply lines and possibly even break out in open revolt. Requires Agent, a pre-existing rebel organization and costs at least 1000 florins, the more you give them the more effective they will be.

Assassinate enemy leader - Make an attempt on the life of an important enemy official. Requires one Agent, any number of Black Ops Squads (the more the better...usually, as too many of them will attract more attention and mean more enemies to fight) and costs 10000 florins to even attempt. Failure when dealing with a neutral country means instant war.

Launch coup attempt - Try to take down the government of another country and replace it with one more friendly to you. I'll post whether or not a country is coupable in the Event Thread. Requires one Agent, any number of Black Ops Squads (the more the better...usually, as too many of them will attract more attention and mean more enemies to fight) and costs 20000 florins to even attempt. Failure when dealing with a neutral country means instant war.

Note that the Director of BOSS can act without orders from Parliament or Emperor, meaning that you should put only trusted allies in the position. To restrain a potentially out-of-control director, slap him with a small budget or the good old threat of 'early retirement' (firing him, not executing him ). If you fail in assassinating someone or coup'ing a neutral country and starting a war, expect the Emperor to remove you if Parliament doesn't.

    Auxiliary rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Like in WEF 1914, you can create an auxiliary (secondary) character following the same format outlined for your first character. However, your aux character cannot occupy the same role as your main (for example, if your main char is a politician, your aux must be a general or diplomat).

Default Re: Rule Britannia - the 1911 Alternate History IH

    List of Emperors, 1645-1911 (present):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Charles I - born 1600, died 1660, ruled 1645 to 1660 - Son of James I of England, Scotland and Ireland. Married Maria Henrietta of France. Established the Imperial Union and a tradition of autocratic rule by Divine Right. Converted to Catholicism, but issued an Edict of Universal Tolerance guaranteeing freedom of religion to his subjects. Previously Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Charles II - born 1630, died 1685, ruled 1660 to 1685 - Son of Charles I. Married Catherine of Braganza. Liberalized the Union after his ascension to the throne by creating a Parliament (albeit one that was full of his puppets) and more thoroughly enforcing his father's Edict of Universal Tolerance. Was notorious for his many mistresses and bastards, as well as his general debauched court.

Charles III - born 1662, died 1722, ruled 1685 to 1722 - Son of Charles II. Married Anna Maria Luisa de Medici. Conquered Canada, Gibraltar, (briefly) Minorca in the War of the Spanish Succession. Completely did away with his grandfather's Edict of Universal Tolerance and officially restored the Church of England to the Holy See in Rome, making Catholicism Britannia's state religion.

James - born 1687, died 1768, ruled 1722 to 1768 - Son of Charles III. Never married. Conquered the French and Dutch Caribbean and Indian colonies.

Charles IV - born 1720, died 1788, ruled 1768 to 1788 - Grandson of James, Duke of York and relative of Emperor James. Was Duke of York at the time of his ascension; the title was passed to his brother Henry. Married Louise of Denmark-Norway. Oversaw the First British-Columbian War, which ended in the restoration of the status quo antebellum. Passed the title 'Duke of York' to his brother upon his ascension to the throne, who had issue and is regarded as the forefather of the modern Stuart House of York, not to be confused with the branch-line of the older Plantagenet dynasty.

Edward I - born 1751, died 1822, ruled 1788 to 1822 - Son of Charles IV. Married Maria Carolina of the Holy Roman Empire. Oversaw the conquest of Japan and a crushing British victory in the War of 1812.

Alexander - born 1788, died 1852, ruled 1822 to 1852 - Son of Edward I. Married Marie Louise of the Holy Roman Empire. Unlike his predecessors, he was a moderate reformist who re-enforced his ancestor Charles I's Edict of Universal Tolerance and, possibly even more importantly, called the first free Parliament in nearly three hundred years and who granted the colonies, starting with Canada, a voice in London through the Grand Colonial Assembly. In no way does this mean that he was a peaceful man, however - it was under his reign that the First Opium War, whose purpose was pretty much to force the Chinese to keep buying drugs from Britannia, was fought.

Edward II - born 1819, died 1902, ruled 1852 to 1902 - Nephew of Alexander I. Married Victoria of Hanover. Not an arch-conservative like his grandfather and others before him, but not a liberal like his father either; he was a highly flexible pragmatist whose beliefs and policies boiled down to 'whatever works'. Refused to openly face his enemies on the continent unless absolutely necessary (or if he felt that he had a good chance of coming out on top) and instead worked to expand the British colonial empire to counter Imperial (Holy Roman) and Russian power. Oversaw the loss of the British Guiana to the Columbians, but compensated for it by solidifying British rule over India, defeating the Qing Empire in the Second Opium War and conquering most of Africa. First Emperor to be successfully assassinated.

Robert - born 1878, still alive, ruled 1902 to present (1911) - Grandson of Edward II through his second son Walter, Duke of Monmouth. Married Isabella di Italia. Physically and psychologically scarred thanks to the assassination of his father, uncle, grandfather and cousin before his eyes. Oversaw the defeat of the last Afrikaner guerrillas operating in the Trans-Tilly region, authorized Theodore Roosevelt's ill-fated attempt to retake the Protectorate of Columbia, and the arrival of the first native Indian MP in London.

    Timeline, 1642-1910:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
1642: First English Civil War between Charles I and his Parliament begins, Royalists take Hull. Dutch invade the Spanish Netherlands. Austria and Bavaria push back against the Protestant Union. French suppress an anti-Richelieu uprising.

1643: Royalists defeat Parliament at Immingham. The 'Great German War' ends favorably for the Empire.

1644: Dutch occupy the Spanish Netherlands. Royalist Highlanders defeat Scottish Covenanter Lowlanders. Another force of Scottish Covenanters destroy a French expeditionary force. Denmark-Norway defeats Sweden.

1645: Royalists win the Battle of Naseby, First English Civil War ends in a Royalist victory. Charles takes mercy on Parliament and lets it survive but politically castrates it, then converts to Catholicism but issues an Edict of Universal Tolerance to appease his Protestant supporters. Imperial Union of Britannia declared with Papal approval. Holy League formed against the Turks.

1646: Swedish Empire destroyed. Second English Civil War begins.

1647: Dutch destroy a Spanish fleet at Santander Bay.

1648: Spain concedes defeat, leaves Dutch in total control of the Spanish Netherlands and recognizes Dutch independence. Second English Civil War ends with yet another victory for Charles. Turks defeated, forced to concede Peloponnese to Venice and Ottoman Hungary to Austria.

1649: The Great Trial of Treason is held by a much less forgiving Emperor Charles. Many MPs are executed or imprisoned, as are several important Puritan leaders. Parliament is closed down and Charles rules by decree as Britannia's absolute monarch. The Puritans, who had been some of Charles's most vocal opponents, are given two choices: to go 'to America or to hell'. The Irish finally drive out Protestant settlers with Imperial approval. Intent on punishing the Lowland Scots for their third act of defiance towards him (the first and second being the Bishops' Wars and First English Civil War, respectively), Charles institutes a policy of 'Scottish plantations', bringing in Irish and Catholic or at least High Church Anglican English settlers into Scotland en masse in an attempt to marginalize the Presbyterian Scots most heavily opposed to him. The Highlanders who consistently remained loyal to him are, of course, spared and in fact allowed to retain their autonomy under the terms of the Engagement of 1642.

1660: Charles I of Britannia dies, succeeded by his eldest son Charles.

1661: Charles II, a more reasonable man than his father, calls a second Parliament...and rigs the election to ensure the election of his close allies. This Parliament is termed the Cavalier Parliament.

1662: A son, also named Charles, is born to Emperor Charles and his wife, Empress Catherine of Braganza.

1666: Great Plague & Fire of London.

1678-1680: Titus Oates instigates a large anti-Catholic revolt in North America with allegations that Emperor Charles would take away the Puritans' colonial charter and enforce 'Popery'. Ironically, following the suppression of the Puritan uprisings, Charles actually does take away the pro-Puritan colonial charters and enforce the Edict of Universal Tolerance in a bid to encourage non-Puritan immigration, though he does not try to force Catholicism on the Puritans.

1685: Charles II dies, succeeded by his son as Emperor. Charles III, an absolutist like his grandfather and a devout Catholic like his uncle, is immediately challenged by his older half-brother James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and one of his father's many bastards. The younger Charles proves himself a capable military leader and defeats Monmouth at the Battle of Sedgemoor, then goes on to openly promote a pro-Catholic agenda.

1688: Parliament, outraged over Charles III's pro-Catholic agenda, offers the throne to his cousin, William III of the Netherlands. The plot is foiled however, and Charles not only suppresses Parliament but revokes the Edict of Universal Tolerance his grandfather issued. A Third English Civil War begins, but once again the Imperialists defeat Parliament. Like his grandfather, Emperor Charles dissolves Parliament indefinitely and rules by decree. The Holy Roman Empire is formally united under the Austrian Habsburgs.

1689-1691: The Great Puritan Rebellion breaks out in America once the authoritarian Governor Edmund Andros attempts to enforce Catholicism on the Puritan colonists, as per Emperor Charles III's orders. By the end of the year, the Puritans have expelled the British from the continent and proclaimed the Commonwealth of Columbia, with English Civil War hero Oliver Cromwell's son Richard as its first Lord Protector. Further attempts to retake the colony end in failure as Charles is more concerned with solidifying his powerbase back in the Home Isles, and the British presence in North America is reduced to Newfoundland, Rupert's Land and some Caribbean islands.

1700-1715: War of the Spanish Succession. Breaking from his father and grandfather's generally pro-French policies, Charles III takes action to prevent complete French hegemony over Europe and sides with the Grand Alliance of the Holy Roman Empire, the Dutch Republic and Savoy. Britannia conquers Canada, which they planned to use a base for future military operations against Columbia. Continental gains are as OTL.

1714: Lord Protector Richard Cromwell dies and is succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Peter. Britannia purchases the Cape Colony from the Holy Roman Empire.

1722: Charles III dies, succeeded by his son James as Emperor James I of Britannia.

1745: Lord Protector Peter Cromwell dies and is succeeded by his nephew Richard.

1753-1759: Six Years' War in Europe. Russia and France ally to defeat the Holy Roman Empire and the Netherlands, which had been menacing both of them, and come out victorious at a massive human and financial cost. Britannia enters the war late, in 1755, purely to seize the French and Dutch Asian and Caribbean colonies - which they finally succeed in doing - and promptly abandon the Holy Romans to their fate. In the process, the British further solidify their hold on India with a crushing victory over the French-backed Bengalis at Plassey.

1768: James I dies heirlessly. The throne passes to his relative Charles Edward, Duke of York, a descendant of Charles II's brother James, who takes the throne as Charles IV. Charles's brother Henry is made Duke of York in his place.

1772: Lord Protector Richard II Cromwell dies and is succeeded by his son Obadiah.

1775-1781: Columbia and Britannia go to war for the first time in nearly a century. Despite receiving considerable funds from the French (who were quite willing to overlook the Columbians' fanatical Puritan beliefs for a chance to get back at Britannia) the Columbians make little headway; their invasions of Canada and the British Caribbean flounder in the face of reinforcements from the homeland, British naval supremacy, and the inspired leadership of Governor-Generals Guy Carleton and the Marquess Cornwallis respectively, and the British impose a total naval blockade on Columbian ports following a crushing naval victory off the coast of Acadia. Further defeats on land follow as the 'Old Guard' military brass of the Commonwealth, especially Generalissimo and Commonwealth First Secretary Horatio Gates, refuse to listen to the more able younger generation or 'New Guard' officers (including men such as George Washington and Nathaniel Greene) and insist on doing things their way. The war ends with a restoration of the status quo antebellum.

1782: A cabal of younger officers led by Nathaniel Greene, furious over the defeat in the Great American War and made even angrier by the Old Guard's attempts to use them as scapegoats for said defeat, executes a coup to remove Lord Protector Obadiah Cromwell (already aged, senile and depressed over the death of his two eldest sons in the war) from power. The Old Guard allows the coup to go ahead, figuring that Obadiah's position had become politically untenable after last year's disaster, but steps in at the last minute to proclaim Obadiah's nephew Jebediah the new Lord Protector.

1788: Charles IV dies and is succeeded by his son Edward, who takes the throne as Edward I of Britannia. The British also begin colonizing Australia in earnest.

1790-1792: The Corsicans, led by nationalist Pasquale Paoli, launch a revolt against the French and invite Britannia to become their suzerain. Emperor Edward, seeking a Mediterranean base for the Imperial Navy, agrees and starts the Corsican War of 1790-1792. In this mostly naval conflict, the British and Corsicans emerge triumphant and proclaim an Anglo-Corsican Kingdom with Sir Gilbert Elliot named its first Viceroy. A certain Horatio Nelson makes his name in this conflict.

1792-1795: The British prop up the Zand dynasty in Persia with funds, arms and later advisers. Lotf Ali Khan Zand holds on to his throne despite the efforts of Agha Muhammad Khan Qajar to unseat him, though the Qajars remain in control of northern Persia with clandestine (and later, quite open) support from Russia.

1793-1799: George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney goes to Japan in an attempt to secure favorable trading rights and end the Sakoku policy of isolation. When Macartney failed to show proper respect to Shogun Tokugawa Ienari and nearly got himself killed, Emperor Edward took advantage of the relative calm in Europe to invade Japan, spinning Macartney's blunders into the 'heathen barbarians of Japan' threatening to kill a 'good gentleman of the Crown' for no good reason. Brigadier-General Benedict Arnold and Major-General John André are entrusted with joint command of the expedition (a mixed force of British regulars, Indian Sepoys and mercenaries) and defeat the outgunned and obsolete Japanese army in six years, having bribed several anti-Tokugawa daimyos to speed the process. André executes Tokugawa Ienari under orders from London. Emperor Edward, however, turns out to be completely insensitive toward Japanese culture and, ignoring Arnold's and André's advice, proclaims himself the new Emperor of Japan while ordering Emperor Kōkaku and his imperial family deported to India, which leads to...

(on a side note, Russia occupied Hokkaido with little trouble in 1798, when it had become clear that the Japanese were a step short of utter defeat)

1801-1818: Great Japanese Rebellion. Hundreds of thousands of furious Japanese revolt against the British and, led by Matsudaira Sadanobu, quickly overrun the countryside and place the major cities of Kyoto, Kagoshima and Hiroshima (the epicenters of the British colonial administration) under siege. They are relieved by reinforcements led by Lord Paget. Over the next seventeen years André and Paget worked together to reconquer Japan, but even after capturing Tokyo in 1809 and Matsudaira Sadanobu's execution the following year Japanese guerrillas continue to operate until Paget, having inherited the title Earl of Uxbridge and taken over as Governor-General of Japan in 1812 following André's assassination by a Japanese radical, finally stamped out the last of them in 1818.

1812: Pressured by a military faction called the 'Goshawks', composed of younger and much more aggressive officers, Lord Protector Jebediah Cromwell goes to war with Britannia despite the urging of the 'Old Guards', a faction of conservatives and senior officers opposed to more wars with the British after the disaster of 1775-1781. The war starts off badly for the Commonwealth, as Tecumseh's Indian Confederacy works together with Isaac Brock's combined force of British regulars and Canadian militia to overrun the Northwest Territory, while Columbian ports soon came under blockade once again following the Viscount Nelson's crushing victory over Rear-Admiral Chauncey off the coast of Newfoundland. In the south, Governor-General Alexander Hamilton of the British Caribbean stormed Florida and routed the Columbians under Colonel Aaron Burr, killing Burr in the process. When the Viscount Wellington arrived with a large army of British regulars and invaded Maine, Lord Protector Cromwell lost his nerve and signed a humiliating peace with the British, ceding the hotly contested territory of northwest Maine and Florida and also recognizing the independence of the 'Indian Confederation' in the Northwest Territory.

1813: The Goshawks, furious over Columbia's humiliating defeat in the War of 1812 and capitalizing on the general population's discontent with the Cromwellian establishment, launches yet another large mutiny, this time intent on taking the Cromwell family down and destroying their Old Guard rivals for good. At an engagement near Lexington, Massachusetts, Winfield Scott and his mutineers defeat government loyalists led by General Henry Dearborn and move on to capture Boston - and with it, Jebediah Cromwell and his family. A governing triumvirate consisting of Brigadier-General James Breckinridge, Rear-Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry and State Councillor Henry Clay was organized with Breckinridge as Lord Protector, Perry as First Secretary and Clay as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

While initially willing to let Cromwell and his family live in quiet retirement in Kentucky, the triumvirate changed their mind when Brigadier-General William Hull raised an army of Cromwellian loyalists and marched on Boston, loudly proclaiming his intention to restore Jebediah Cromwell to power and have the Triumvirs 'swing from the trees'. Lord Protector Breckinridge confronted and defeated Hull just outside the town of Avon, after which the Cromwells were executed at the urging of Secretary for State Security John C. Calhoun, who pointed out that the Triumvirs' political position will always be endangered as long as a Cromwell still lives for the remnants of the Old Guard to rally around. Other members of the House of Cromwell are hunted down under Calhoun's supervision.

1814: Not about to give up the Cromwellian 'Good Old Cause' just yet, ex-General Arthur St. Clair rescues Jebediah Cromwell's cousin Ephraim from Calhoun's agents and amasses an army in Connecticut, where Cromwellian sympathies had always run high. While St. Clair's attempted march on Boston was initially successful, defeating first the Massachusetts Militia and later Brigadier-General Zebulon Pike's army at Milville, he is defeated by Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Ashland, captured and hung as yet another traitor to the Commonwealth; Ephraim Cromwell had already been killed in the battle, decapitated by a cannonball while leading a cavalry charge into Jackson's ranks. This last decisive defeat, combined with the death of the last viable heir to the Cromwell name, spelled the complete collapse of the Old Guard faction and allowed the Triumvirs to consolidate their hold on Commonwealth politics.

1819: First Secretary Perry of the Commonwealth dies of yellow fever. The other Triumvirs, Breckinridge and Clay, agree to have John C. Calhoun to replace him.

1822: Emperor Edward I dies of a stroke. He is succeeded by his eldest son Alexander. Relations between the Puritan Triumvirs begin to decline, as all three are highly ambitious men and could not share power forever, and as a result three new factions emerge from the ranks of the Goshawks - a military faction revolving around Breckinridge with the objective of solidifying the military's control on government, a reactionary faction led by Calhoun that wanted Columbia to 'rediscover its Puritan roots' and included many radical preachers, and a liberal faction led by Clay with the objective of empowering the Commonwealth Parliament at the expense of the executive.

1825: Proving himself to be a relatively liberal monarch, Emperor Alexander calls the first Parliament in nearly two centuries.

1826: Breckinridge and Calhoun join forces to oust Clay and replace him with Richard Rush, who (unbeknownst to Breckinridge) was an ally of Calhoun's. Clay's liberal faction is purged on Calhoun's orders, with half a dozen of his chief supporters receiving death sentences on trumped-up charges of treason and the rest imprisoned or exiled, and Clay himself is kept under house arrest in all but name. In Britannia, Emperor Alexander is horrified upon seeing what actually happens on a slave ship and issues an Imperial Decree of Universal Abolition, though he does provide former slaveowners with monetary compensation.

1830: Relations between Calhoun and Breckinridge collapse completely. Both men were actively plotting to remove the other from power, but Calhoun made the first move by personally arresting Breckinridge and accusing him of a large number of charges ranging from 'Popery' to 'selling military secrets to the British enemy'. Like with Clay, Breckinridge's military faction is swiftly and often messily purged, and Breckinridge himself mysteriously died while under house arrest in the winter. General Andrew Jackson is brought in to replace him as Lord Protector.

1835: First Secretary Calhoun decides to get rid of Jackson, having found him even less cooperative than Breckinridge, and arranges for him to die by the hand of Richard Lawrence, an insane citizen convinced that he was Lord Protector Richard I Cromwell. Lawrence's aim proves to have been unaffected by his mental state, and after privately celebrating his rival's death Calhoun has General William Henry Harrison to replace him. The elderly Harrison proves to be a pliable puppet, and with his appointment Calhoun has effectively secured absolute power over Columbia in all but name.

1835-1836: Texas War. Texan independence fighters defeat Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna with Columbian aid and proclaim a free Republic of Texas.

1839-1842: First Opium War. Britannia goes to war with China to open up trading ports and force the Chinese to keep buying opium from them, and ultimately succeeds; Hong Kong is given to Britannia, and a humiliated China is forced to continue purchasing opium to feed their citizens' addiction.

1839-1845: Taking advantage of a minor border crisis with Sardinia-Piedmont, the French invade Italy in a bid to create another ally against the Holy Roman Empire. Despite the intervention of nearly half a million Imperial soldiers, the better-led and prepared French emerge triumphant and proclaim an Italian Kingdom under the Duc d'Orléans in 1844. Indecisive fighting continued for another year before the compromise Peace of Lodi definitively ended the war, with the Imperials recognizing Louis-Philippe's Italy but the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and a rump Papal States (consisting of Rome and its surrounding territory) surviving as Imperial dependencies.

1840: Lord Protector Harrison dies from a cold contracted while giving a speech to reassure the Columbian people that he was not a puppet of Calhoun's. The First Secretary appoints Ex-Colonel Richard M. Johnson as his replacement.

1841: Under pressure from the Colonial Secretaries for autonomy but unwilling to completely lose control over his empire, Emperor Alexander creates a third lower house, the Grand Colonial Assembly, in an effort to create a centralized imperial federation; instead of having devolved colonial parliaments, the citizens of Imperial colonies such as Canada and Japan would send their representatives straight to London, where their issues would be dealt with under the eyes of the Emperor himself. The Canadians are the first to send their MPs to London at the urging of Viceroy James Bruce, Earl of Elgin.

1846-1853: Mexican-Columbian War. Touched off by the annexation of Texas into Columbia and some border skirmishes, the war began and ended disastrously for the Mexicans, who saw their entire country occupied by the Columbians. Mexican citizens are given two choices - convert to Puritanism or be reduced to second-class citizens and be denied political and military office - and whenever an area was deemed to have too many Catholics in it, it would be confiscated by the Columbian government and resettled with 'good Puritan families', further impoverishing the Mexicans who refused to convert.

1850: Lord Protector Johnson and First Secretary Calhoun both die in the same year, creating a power vacuum in the Lord Protector's Residence in Boston. To prevent the country from falling to pieces while still in the process of conquering Mexico, the New Model General Committee makes General Zachary Taylor the First Secretary. Taylor never made it back to Boston - he died while still directing combat operations from Mexico City, which had been captured in 1848. General Winfield Scott replaces him as First Secretary, and Scott would go on to make Brigadier-General Franklin Pierce Lord Protector with the approval of the NWGC; neither man would actually return to Boston until 1853.

1852: Emperor Alexander I of Britannia dies and is succeeded by his nephew Edward, crowned Edward II of Britannia. The first Australian MPs take their seats in the Grand Colonial Assembly.

1853-1856: The Great American War is fought between Britannia and Columbia. Under Scott's leadership, the Columbians avenged the humiliation of 1812 and conquered the Indian Confederation, Florida and British Oregon, though they still failed to take Canada. Many thousands of Indians and Catholic settlers & missionaries fled the wrath of the Puritans, and those staying behind faced the choice of 'conversion or death'. Meanwhile, the Crimean War ends in a Russian victory, as the British were too distracted by the Great American War to intervene.

1857: Sepoy Rebellion in India. The disaster prompts Britannia to take direct control of the subcontinent, transforming it into the 'British Raj' and adding 'Emperor of India' to Emperor Edward I's long list of titles. The Indians are granted representation in the Grand Colonial Assembly, though no actual Indian would sit in the chamber until 1909.

1855: Having repeatedly clashed with Pierce over the issue of slavery and how best to integrate Mexico into the Commonwealth, Scott finally dismisses the Lord Protector and appoints John C. Frémont his replacement. The first Japanese MPs arrive in the Grand Colonial Assembly in London.

1856-1860: In a bid to make up for the disaster that was the Great American War, the British join up with the Bourbon-ruled Kingdom of France and go to war with China once again, this time over the arrest of the crew of the Arrow, a Chinese ship that had been registered in Hong Kong. The war ends in a Franco-British victory and the opening of Shanghai, Xiamen, Canton (Guangzhou), Fuchow (Fuzhou) and Ningpo (Ningbo) to the world; these port cities are administered by a 'Legation Council' consisting of a British, French and Russian representative, a neutral entity independent of China and operating under the protection of the three powers. Russia also takes advantage of the conflict to take Outer Manchuria in the Treaty of Aigun. Britannia also receives Taiwan.

1857: The Dred Scott case incurs the personal disgust of both Lord Protector Frémont and First Secretary Scott, and over the protests of his General Staff and the Council of State (and, of course, the entirety of the South) they issue a joint decree reversing it.

1858: Having proved to be a highly ambitious and impulsive Lord Protector who tried to restore some actual power to his office (little more than a ceremonial figurehead since the passing of Andrew Jackson) at the expense of the First Secretary, Frémont is replaced with James Buchanan on First Secretary Scott's orders.

1861: Winfield Scott dies and is replaced by General George McClellan. McClellan later replaces Lord Protector Buchanan with State Councillor Stephen A. Douglas.

1863-1864/1881: Puritan conquest of Colombia and Venezuela. Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee are jointly tasked with leading the invasion of the two countries. While both fall in a year, actually holding that territory and fighting off guerrillas proves to be a much tougher task, and while major guerrilla activity died down by 1881, 'border reivers' operating from Brazil and the Andes continue to plague frontier areas of the new Scott and Jackson Military Associations (Colombia and Venezuela, respectively). Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador unite into the Andean Confederation to halt any further American expansion.

1867: Upset that First Secretary McClellan was not considering another invasion of Canada after the victory in the Granada War (as the invasion of Colombia & Venezuela came to be called), a faction of hawkish officers within the New Model Army ousts him in the first military coup in forty-seven years and replace him with Grant, who had become highly popular following the Granada War. However, Grant also refuses to attack Canada, and when rumors that the disgruntled officers were about to try to depose him, he orders them purged. Douglas is replaced as Lord Protector by State Councillor Hannibal Hamlin.

1870-1871: The Holy Roman Empire and France come to blows when King Henri V attempted to buy Luxembourg, which Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand IV had been advised by Ministerpräsident Otto von Bismarck would be an excellent opportunity to avenge the earlier defeat of 1839-1845. The French are swiftly and messily defeated, and the King is run out of the country. The Paris Commune is declared and proves impossible for the disorganized French Royalists to stop, and soon it becomes the Commune of France as the true extent of the people's dissatisfaction with the Bourbon absolute monarchy is revealed. Unwilling to enter another conflict so soon and satisfied with avenging Imperial pride in this war, Ferdinand IV decides against intervening against the Commune.

In a bid to prevent a 'London Commune' from forming under his watch, Emperor Edward reduces property and wealth requirements for suffrage in Britannia by three-quarters, while simultaneously putting Henri in power in Algiers and leaving him King in the French colonies.

1872: Lord Protector Hamlin finally pushes through the Emancipation Act of 1872, abolishing slavery in Columbia. Several large planter revolts in the South are messily suppressed by the New Model Army, and when it went over to the side of the rebels, Charleston is besieged and bombarded for six months until it surrenders to General Sherman.

1877-1878: Russo-Turkish War. Further stretching their muscles after the victory in the Crimea, the Russians bulldoze the Ottoman army in a relatively brief war. A Greater Bulgaria and Kurdistan are created as Russian satellite states, while the Russian de-facto puppets of Greece, Serbia and Romania are also expanded at the Ottomans' expense, and Russia snatches eastern Turkey. As his son, Prince Edgar Francis of Wales, had only recently married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, in a bid to improve Russo-British relations, Emperor Edward ends up letting the Russians get away with this.

1879: Zulu-British War. The British invade Zululand and, after sustaining several major defeats such as Isandlwana, eventually overrun the African kingdom.

1880: Suffering from a weak heart, Lord Protector Hamlin retires from his post - the first man to voluntarily give up the office instead of dying while holding it (as many Cromwells and Richard Mentor Johnson had) or being kicked out of power by his own army. James Blaine, a brilliant orator and senior State Councillor, is called up to replace him despite First Secretary Grant's personal misgivings.

1880-1881: First Afrikaner War. Britannia attempts to conquer the Afrikaner Freistaaten beyond the Tilly River but fails and is forced to recognize Afrikaner independence; the defeat sends shockwaves throughout the Imperial Union.

1881: Tsar Alexander II 'the Liberator' of Russia survives yet another terrorist attempt on his life and implements his planned reforms for Russian government and society, eventually crippling radical revolutionary organizations (such as the one that tried to kill him) through a mix of said reforms (which placate the populace) and a number of crackdowns. Russia is set on the course to becoming a major industrial power.

1881-1890: Mahdist War in the Sudan. Led by a charismatic religious leader who proclaimed himself the Islamic Messiah, Muhammad Ahmad, the Muslims of the Sudan rise up and nearly push out the British and Egyptians. Eventually, after the Mahdi's death in 1885 and with the aid of Yohannes IV of Ethiopia, the British defeat the Mahdist fanatics. Ethiopia, whose Emperor had led a massive army to victory at Gallabat and whose efforts in general had proved crucial to the British victory, is rewarded with recognition of Somaliland and South Sudan as their territory.

1882: First Secretary Grant retires from office and is replaced by General Joshua L. Chamberlain. Lord Protector Blaine, already marred by accusations of corruption, is replaced by Brigadier-General Benjamin Harrison. Britannia conquers Egypt while the weakened Ottomans, already under constant menace from the Russians and their pawns in the Balkans and Kurdistan, can do little but watch from the sidelines.

1885-1886: Great South American War. Columbia attacks Brazil and Britannia, secures northeast Brazil and British Guyana before a front stabilizes. Two failed attempts to invade Canada, one through the heavily fortified Niagara Falls and the other an attempted amphibious landing in Nova Scotia, convince First Secretary Chamberlain to cut his losses and settle for all that he had gained by that point. Royalist France, an ally of Britannia, also loses French Guiana, but makes up for the loss later in 1885 by conquering Indochina.

1890-1900: Nicaragua Canal constructed for exclusive Columbian use.

1895-1896: The Second Afrikaner War. Opened up by a botched and unauthorized raid into the Trans-Tilly region, which nevertheless managed to kick off a small 'Uitlander' (British worker) uprising and gave the British all the excuse to intervene. A 500,000-strong modern army, drawn from every corner of the Imperial Union and placed under the supreme command of Lord Kitchener, was deployed by the British in an attempt to avoid the catastrophe of 1880-81, and destroys the Trans-Tilly Afrikaner Freistaaten with violent overkill in a lightning campaign. Guerrilla resistance continues into 1905, however.

Not long after, the former territory of the Afrikaner Freistaaten, Bechuanaland and the two 'Lesser Rhodesias' are absorbed into the Cape Colony, which is then renamed Greater Rhodesia to feed the ego of properly honor Cecil Rhodes, Viceroy of the colony and architect of Britannia's expansion in the 'Darkest Continent'.

1896: Under heavy popular pressure for the past four years, First Secretary Chamberlain dismisses Lord Protector Harrison and names popular revolutionary William J. Bryan his successor. However, Bryan's reformist agenda is too much for the Puritan military leadership to stomach, and he is conveniently killed via runaway carriage within six months, after which Harrison was restored to power. Several populist revolts break out following the assassination, but all are put down and their leaders executed.

1898: Spanish-Columbian War. The Columbians deprive the Spanish of their last major colonies, and Cuban revolutionaries who were initially elated to see the Spanish go are soon more than a little displeased when an order from Boston to 'convert or die' arrives at their front door.

1899-1901: The Boxer Rebellion erupts as a violent backlash to perceived foreign domination of Chinese affairs. In retaliation, Britannia, the Holy Romans, Russia, Royalist France and Columbia unite as the Five-Nation Alliance to forcibly restore order and enforce pro-Western policies in China. In the end, the Boxers are defeated, the HRE and Columbia get seats on the Legation Council, Russia 'indefinitely' occupies Manchuria, and the Qing dynasty is utterly humiliated.

1899-1902/1913: Philippine Revolution. The largely Catholic and Muslim Filipinos do their utmost to kick out the Columbians, who had been trying to shove Puritanism down their throats, but ultimately fail. The Philippines are methodically 'cleared out' for Puritan resettlement as a result.

1900: First Secretary Chamberlain retires, replaced by General Elwell Otis.

1901: Lord Protector Harrison dies in office, the first to do so peacefully since Richard Mentor Johnson in 1850. Otis names Major-General Theodore Roosevelt, a veteran of the Spanish-Columbian War, his successor, hoping that the ambitious Roosevelt would be satisfied with his shiny new (and, by this point, completely ceremonial) office.

1901-1907: Undaunted by the purely ceremonial nature of his office, Roosevelt actively worked to restore some actual power to the Lord Protectorate and tried to purge political corruption, especially in the form of state-supported trusts (which provided many Columbian officials in all levels of government with millions of dollars in kickbacks). He also worked to elevate a younger generation of officers, some of whom served with him, to replace the aging generation of senior military officers - including extremely powerful veteran commanders such as Otis himself, General Arthur MacArthur and General Adna Chaffee, none of whom were amused by (at least what they perceived as) his efforts to build an independent powerbase.

1902: In July, only a week after celebrating his Golden Jubilee, Emperor Edward II of Britannia is killed in an anarchist assault on his procession from Windsor Castle to London, which opened with a number of bombs being hurled at the Imperial carriage and was followed up by a 'mop-up' crew of gunmen. Several other members of the Imperial family are killed in the attack before the last of the assassins were slaughtered or apprehended by the Imperial Guard and local police. The other notable casualties were:

-Edgar Francis, Prince of Wales. Killed instantly in the bombing with his wife, Princess Mary of Wales. Was first in line to the throne of Britannia.
-Richard, Duke of Clarence and only son of the Prince of Wales, grandson of Emperor Robert. Killed trying to shield his wife Duchess Mathilda from the blast with his body; fails anyway, as the Princess was mortally wounded by shrapnel and was found dead in his also-lifeless arms. Second in line to the British throne.
-Walter, Duke of Monmouth, second son of Emperor Robert I. Sustained only light injuries in the initial bombing, but was fatally wounded in the later shootout with the anarchist 'mop-up crew' - though not before putting a bullet in his assailant's eye. Third in line to the throne.
-James, Duke of York, head of the Yorkist Stuarts descended from Emperor Charles IV's brother Henry and cousin of the Emperor. Killed instantly in the bombing. Sixth in line to the throne.
-Thomas Preston, Earl of Leinster and cousin to the Emperor. Wounded in the bombing, finished off by an anarchist gunman but managed to alert the Imperial Guards to his - and said anarchist's - position. Ninth in line to the throne.

The throne passes to Walter's son Robert, only a day ago the fourth in line to the throne, who was crowned Emperor Alexander II in the most somber coronation ceremony in British history. Permanently scarred (physically and mentally) from the attack, he promptly orders a brutal crackdown on the anarchist movement and, upon being told that the old punishment of hanging, drawing and quartering was impossible to carry out for 'violating public decency', ordered the surviving anarchist bombers and gunmen killed in that manner in a 'private' ceremony that he personally oversaw.

1905: The last Afrikaner guerrillas, weakened by British counterinsurgency operations and demoralized after seeing their families and friends packed off to concentration camps, turn in their arms. Peace is restored to the Trans-Tilly region at a severe humanitarian cost.

1906: First Secretary Otis resigns in ailing health, replaced by Lieutenant-General Frederick Funston.

1907: Frustrated by Roosevelt's constant power plays and attempts at Progressive reforms (which threatened his bank account), First Secretary Funston orders the Roosevelts arrested. Finding himself politically isolated, Roosevelt decides to flee to Canada with his family and fight another day, eluding hundreds of State Security agents and convincing a border guard (whose wife was an ardent supporter of his) to let him through. Popular evangelist William A. Sunday was chosen to replace him.

1908: Roosevelt secures tacit British approval to retake Columbia and promptly bankrolls a small army of exiled supporters, adventurers and mercenaries for a cross-border invasion of Columbia from Ontario. The 'Bull Moose', as he was called by both admirers and enemies, defeats both the New York Militia and New Model Army regulars in several engagements (most famously the Battle of Auburn, where with a mere 3,000 soldiers he and his second-in-command Leonard Wood routed an entire New Model division (10,000 men) led by General Jacob Smith) and occupies Albany, New York in August, his army swollen to nearly 40,000 as supporters came out of the woodwork to assist him. However, First Secretary Funston amasses and personally leads 60,000 men up north to put him 'in the soil' once and for all, first defeating Wood at Cortland and cutting Roosevelt's supply lines, and then laying siege to Albany. The city fell in November to an all-out attack, where nearly twenty thousand civilians lost their lives in the government's merciless bombardments and final assault, and Roosevelt's army was shattered - 8,000 of his men lay dead and nearly 30,000 captured; Roosevelt himself was taken prisoner.

Unfortunately for Funston (who had been looking forward to his execution), the 'Bull Moose' broke out of prison in late December and, once again eluding government agents and redoubled military patrols, escaped to Canada by land, sea and for the home stretch (and due to the heavy presence of New Model troops on the border), by air with Orville Wright, touching down in Huronia in early 1909. In one of the most infamous events of his career as First Secretary to date, Funston lost his temper in public upon being informed of Roosevelt's escape and throttled the messenger, a young Second Lieutenant George C. Marshall.

1909: The first native Indian MP, moderate reformist Gopal Krishna Gokhale, takes his seat in the Grand Colonial Assembly.

1910: Russia formally annexes Manchuria and invades Korea, capturing Seoul in months and reducing King Gojong to a puppet in the Treaty of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. War with Britannia is averted at the last second by the Treaty of Port Arthur, which granted the British Jeju Island and an extra seat on the Legation Council.

    Okay yeah I'm in.
when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
but the union makes us strong.

Yep. But mostly Politicians, who will set the policy of the country and decide it's actions when issues arise. But Generals and Admirals will be there...and probably other ranks too.

Unless we decide not to be, and to run a criminal empire that fights "Britannia" as Barry said we could.

Hey Agg, what do you think of us making a revolution and starting a country?

so can anyone give us a list of what exactly we can be? xD It would help alot

EDIT: I love Ireland *-* I dont know Scottland to say I love it, but I like the Scottish People, they're funny xDD But to make a revolution so close to the capital would be a bit suicidle, no?

I'm thinking Ontario, actually. Then we could either have support from Columbia, or convince the Northern states to secede.

Still think it would be more fun to play in Columbia though, especially in the early 1900s. Who cares what the Brits did in the 1900s?
